Anyone here after seeing the Hawaii Mars’s last flight?

At 15 years old, I watched the Saunders & Roe “Princess” churn up the Solent taking off rarely. Always wondering, what was going on with it? Nice to hear the history.

Sadly, this era ends in a few days. August 11th 2024, the Hawaii Mars will be flown for the very last time, to a Canadian museum. Enjoy the videos on YT capturing the final testing of her, including local flights, in preparation for her last, ever flight. The Phillipines Mars will be transported (possibly flown for some of the way; details yet to be announced), to a museum in Arizona.

The flying boats were fascinating, to be able to land and takeoff on water is a beautiful sight to see.

Earlier this month [May 2024] My big sister took my Dad and I on a tour of the Hawaii Mars [Sproat lake], around it and inside when the mechanics were on lunch hour. Got to sit in the captain's seat and make plane engine noises. What a joy to see this plane. Standing at the tail, looking up at the size of it is jaw dropping. Thanks to Coulson for letting us see the HM before she's takes off to the BC Air Museum

I remember seeing ths Princess flying boats at Saunders Roe on the river Medina on the Isle of Wight during a family holiday in the 1950's. They were simply huge aircraft.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so controlled by fear even in todays world fear is the primary form of control used by governments.

Currently building a 1/72 plastic Catalina. I've often imagined the rare, very cool assignment on one of these as a 19, 20, 21 year old (if you had to be in war). These guys probably had no shortage of women wanting to ride on the ship in the water, and able to pick up a lot of other things like good food and booze! 😅 They probably had a great time, or at least memorable, all things considered. What other plane from that era was made into a luxury craft after the war (Landseaire)? This stuff wouldn't happen today, totally unique situation in time and space these heroes found themselves in.

Around 1987 my ex and I were taken for a tour of the Mars Bombers on Sproat lake. We were take on a interior tour by my friend Bryan who is a helicopter mechanic but was also tasked with maintaining the Mars. It was an amazing experience to see these giant airships that carried what seemed a tiny but long water tank in the bottom, and the rest of the interior basically empty. Then years later while living on my sailboat moored in Fanny bay The bombers flew past just above my masthead before skimming & scooping up seawater for a fire up in the Cumberland area. This lasted for 2 full days of scooping water every 20 minutes. That's a lot of water being moved and some interesting memories.

My mother served on Catalina repair base ,lake boga Victoria Australia, also she went up in a Sunderland she and I loved them ,mom,s job was cooking, thank you for making this video, cheers mate 👍

I saw these two planes in Witcha, Kansas in 2023. To see them sitting on the ground was unforgettable. To watch them take off was unbelievable. I had to take photos on my phone. If I had known I would see them I would have brought my Olympus camera.

Nice images and commentary, but why the loud, unnecessary music?

Before the war, America was almost bankrupt and Britain holding its own. By the end of the war, America had taken all Britain's gold reserves from home and all its Commonwealth members - and was rich and powerful. Britain paid a lot for WW2, with no help from Europe afterwards. We finished paying the bill well into the 2000s. Allies? In one way - yes. Those poorly trained US soldiers never stood a chance, but they did their duty, unless you were certain generals on an ego trip.

Fantastic footage of the great old Flying Boats but I've noticed whenever featuring RAF or Commonwealth aircrew the American narrator more often than not gets the rank wrong. Take Captain Burch, RAAF, his correct rank will be Group Captain, distinguishing him as an Air Force officer as opposed to a Captain in the USAAF or USMC which would make Me Burch a Flight Lieutenant, demoting him by 2 ranks. Veterans deserve accuracy as do today's professional armed forces.

The SR Princess is a piece of work. I can just remember seeing it still there in Cowes when I was about five....could just see its nose in the shed....amazing.

That old Consolidated Pilot is wonderful.

For anyone interested in the '"what might have been" of flying boats, I highly suggest watching the 1936 film, NON-STOP NEW YORK, a very enjoyable mystery-thriller-comedy with some sci-fi touches, wonderfully played and directed by future MARY POPPINS director Robert Stevenson. The existing prints are not very good quality, but it's worth a watch (it's on youtube). Great eccentric characters/lots of fun, and a great look at an imaginary super-flying boat!

Absolutely Amazing

My mother worked on the PBY Catalina Flying boat during WW2 at a Boeing plant in what is now Richmond BC. She was 5ft 1 and about 100 lbs so her job was installing the wiring harnesses in the wings as she was small enough to slide in on her back.She was originally paid 50 cents an hour and was proud to show me her pay stub when she got a raise to $ 1 an hour

Durning the war I saw them all the time in the air above Alameda and Oakland.

I remember seeing them fly and we ( kid's) could tell the Mars and Clipper from each other, I was born and raised in Alameda, born in 1939

My father was a RAF radio engineer on Catalina’s based in the Maldives during WW2. He was 1 of 6 on an island for 5yrs. It was service and refuelling station. They were one of the last service personnel to be returned home after a mix up (9 months!) thinking they’d already been picked up, he never forgot his time on the FB’s.

It gave the impression that the states declared war on Germany. Not so, it was the Third Reich that declared war on America! I am constantly surprised how many people are not aware of this fact!
