What knot for the loop on your dropper to the swivel, and to the decoy direct do you use? I know you called it a bowline, but doesn't look like one? It has the tag end parallel with the main, very neat, laid nice. Is there another name for it? Thanks!

I like both contemporary and vintage. I grew up in Peoria,Il, Illinois river, Mississippi flyway;central flyway. I try to focus on that. As a life long Water Fowler I love the nostalgia of hunting over wooden decoys. But even better is a call lanyard full of bands. Even vintage calls are interesting

Hey Tim I’m working on my second Canada Goose body to hunt over as a novice carver and there aren’t any commercially available patterns for a goose. I had to make my own off an old Redhead brand field decoy to make a floater. What’s the secret as novice carver to get better?

Hello Russ, I lived next door to Duncan Ducharme. I remember, as young boy, going over there and watch him carve decoys. All he had for equipment were a hand saw, a hatchet, a rasp, and a bit of sand paper. Out of a piece of cedar chunk, cut off of an old telephone pole, he would create his magic. He carved working decoys for various guides and lodges in the area of the Delta marsh. Someone had a gunny sack full of Duncan's decoys. When I started guiding on the Delta marsh, I remember using some of these decoys. I have a collection of decoys, but I don't have one of his, wish I had.

I also use the brass clips like you have. One word of caution. I've lost some weights in the past when dragging the line. Often times when deploying by boat in deeper water you may need to adjust a line or two and the easiest way is to pick up one end and drag the line where you want. Several times doing this I've had the clip open under water and lost the weight. The weights I use I make with a 12 oz soda can full of lead with a stainless eye placed in the lead during the pour. Sucks to lose them. If anyone knows of a brass clip with a slide "lock" or similiar share the link.

I think The most important part of collecting decoys is to start by buying one of my decoys hehe. I have been carving for 35 years now and have carvings all over the world. .So if you want one of mine just hit me up ...Cheers from Canada.

You show a piece 2-3" thick...Do you work with larger? 5"....6"? I have access to clear cedar milled however I want....what would you ask for if you could carve any dimension white cedar?
@timspeight7534
@timspeight7534 7 жыл бұрын
The best size depends on the size of decoy you are making. For example the best size block would be different if you were carving a Teal versus a Goose. 4 inch thickness works well for most decoys.

What are you using for the brace? That is so simple I love it but can't find one.
@timspeight7534
@timspeight7534 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat. The brace is a piece of square steel tubing with a piece of flat 1/4" steel welded on top to form a T. We then drilled holes in the cross piece to mount the decoy body. Your local welding shop could make up one of these in a jiffy.
