The bonnets are my absolute favourite. So good in a tomato, bacon and cheese omelette. I'm drooling at the size of your bok choy. I bet your harvest basket looks amazing😊

The scotch bonnets are showing off this year too! Big, red and shiney with a wicked kick :) you have great taste in chillis!

@ourkiwigarden You have great taste in chiles.. Grins! I couldn't imagine life without them.. 🤔😁 Do you make 🌶 chains? I made one recently and put up a short, if you want to take a look. After completing the chain, Poke each chilli with a knife, so they dry out quicker. Then lay them on the backdash of your car for a couple of weeks (or a sunny position) to dry.. Mine was short enough to hang from the revision mirror... ✔️ They look great hanging up beside a garlic plait.. I imagine your varieties would make a very pretty chain indeed. 🙌👣💦🌱

They either get eaten fresh or frozen for a batch of hot sauce - im looking forward to trying a fermented recipie with all the hots we have this year :)

@ourkiwigarden ooo la la, what kind of ferments?? Chillies on their own or chillies with other condiments? I could then straight in with the preserved tomatoes.. Oh yum the chilli sauce sounds amaziballs!

How did the first six months go? I just gave my sister my can of worms because I found the finished trays a bit heavy for me to move around (I'm a wheelchair user). But, it's a fabulous system! ~ Sandra

I’ve had my can-of-worms for years now. It’s very sturdy but the trays do get very heavy.

Have you tried the hilling method? That’s what I’m doing in North Carolina for our Fall harvest of potatoes. It may yield more taters!

I have a crop down just now that I used the hilling method on :) I'm excited to dig them up to see how they went! Planted in Autumn here in New Zealand.

Here they are sprayed with an anti-sprouting solution. That's why you shouldn't eat the peel! If the potatoes are organic/non-sprayed, it should work. Make sure the potatoes you use are not damaged - disease potential. There are lots of videos with tips. Good Luck!

Hey they still multiplied right?!? I think you did great for your first time! I have tried several years, & only last year I had success I would say... but last year was also the first time I bought ACTUAL seed potatoes Before I would just try to grow from organic potatoes from the grocery store. What size grow bags did you use?
@ourkiwigarden Жыл бұрын
They did! That's a cool way to look it......I got more than I planted :) Thanks for the encouragement! I used a mix of 35 and 45 ltr grow bags and have just popped supermarket ones back in for an Autumn crop. 🍂

I am happy to see your harvest I have only grown potatoes in the garden and hill them up quite tall. I plant them in late June and plan to harvest in mid September or a couple weeks later. I live in Pa in USA and we are in growing zone 6 We get killing frost anytime after the second week of October. I find the later plant and harvest dates give me a crop that is late to sprout in Storage. Do you use soil amendments like green sand well rotted manure or mushroom mulch soil??? I always think these things improve our crops... there is nothing which give me pleasure like a productive garden. Thanks for your videos. Blessing to you and your family and your work in the garden!!!!! Rick
@ourkiwigarden Жыл бұрын
Hello to PA, from NZ :) I planted these ones in straight compost and fed regularly. I've recently added a worm farm to our garden, so I'm hoping some vermicast, more compost, and even some mushroom mix will definitely help my raised beds! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Learning from people doing it is awesome!!
@RovingPunster Жыл бұрын
I'm kinda skeptical of grow bags, because once youve transplanted something into one, the bag cannot be moved, or you risk possible damage to the root structure. At least with a pail you can move a plant if you need to (ex: to avoid a wind storm, or possible hail).
@ourkiwigarden Жыл бұрын
I hadn't thought about that angle in regards to root structure! I wonder if the shallow rooted stuff would suffer more disturbance? Food for thought! Thank you 😊
@RovingPunster Жыл бұрын
@@ourkiwigarden I do find their breathability enticing ... but here on the eastern coast of the US, gusty storms and late summer noreasters are an issue, so i occasionally have to safe some of my container plants (mostly tomatos and peppers) into my detached garage for a day or two. Anyway, cheers. I'm learning as I go.

A tip from Sweden; lay the seed potato on a thin layer of soil in the bag and cover it with a couple of inches of soil. When the greenery has become about 0,5 ft you cover it with more soil, leaving just the tip of the greenery above the surface. Keep on doing that until you have filled the whole bag/bucket. The potato stem will produce bulbs along the whole stem in that way. I use to do this in pallet collars when I get a new sort and want to multiply it for growing in our big potato field next year. You have a whole different climate compared to mine, I live close to the arctic circle and a cold climate is often better for growing potatoes but give it a try. Also give the plants water, a moist but not wet soil keeps pest from the bulbs. Good luck!
@ourkiwigarden Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We are about to plant an Autumn crop and will give this method a try :) I hope it's starting to warm up a little for you.......Spring is on its way!
@Mr.Niceguygenetics Жыл бұрын
I do the same ! Put about 4-5 inches of soil in the bottom of the pot or bag, and 3 inches of dirt on top and water! Wait till it grows it’s stalk and after it grows keep adding soil as it gets taller, until the top of the pot or bag is filled with dirt and keep watering until the plant topples over and comes to the end of its life . And then tilt it over and pull out a horde of potatoes! Also in your soil mix add sand it helps with drainage and it makes it easier to pull the potatoes out!
@backwoodscountryboy1600 Жыл бұрын
We use the same method when we plant red potatoes in the state of Alabama. We also plant the same type of red potatoes that you do. They always make lots of potatoes using this growing method in grow bags and we like the grow bags because they're easy to move around
