Air flow goes from top to bottom if your arrow is indicating air flow the arrow will be pointing down if your arrow is indicating which side should face up then arrow will be up. the arrows are cause of confusion but rule of thumb air is going through from top so find air flow indicator and install accordingly

Note you have to also reset the oil control system just a ove the oil and filter option in order for the maintenance light to shut off

I recommend using the proper oil that meets BMW's requirements. you need a Long Life 01 oil, has nothing to do with interval time and never use high mileage it expands the seals but overime they'll start leaking. I learned the hard way
