I lost a very dear, dear close friend last August, she was diagnosed with liver cancer. But because of her age they said that chemotherapy would not be an option. She was a devout Christian who loved to reachout to the homeless and to those who had addictions with the message of the gospel. I was with her in her final hours praying for a miracle which did not come, as she took her last breath, I cried out to God why?. I sometimes wonder why He allows suffering but I know He is in control and I know that death has been conquered. Revelation 21:4 gives me hope. The Lord be with you all.

Is it justice to punish someone eternally for disbelief during a human lifetime?

The ultimate reason for there being no hell is not even that it is unfair and clumsily thought out. That yes it may take ten seconds to murder someone and you will be in prison for twenty years - but twenty years is still a finite period of time. The ultimate reason for there being no hell is that it is moronic. Even if in some thoroughly strange way all who ended up in hell deserved to be there it would be utterly useless and pointless to keep them alive there. No good (and God is meant to be a good nourishing God) would come out of it. It is a soil from which no healthy or useful plant can flower. People might as well be anihalated. This would be what a merciful God would do with those who no matter what would refuse to love (and god in his mercy would give people every opportunity to love it was within his capability to give) But you have to asked how psychologically balanced God is to produce the human race if the vast vast majority of them end up in perpetual torment. After all the road is wide to destruction and narrow to heaven and very many are on the wide road. If there really was a God creating human beings as beings who would sing his praises in his ear and do as they were told was an act of utter indulgence and folly. He knew how it would end up even before he did it. Getting his son to try and do a mop up job with his botched plans instead of changing his sick simplistic criteria of judgement the utter example of a narcicist. Poor Jesus. His father abandoned him on the cross. I am not being sarcastic here. Yet Jesus - in John the last and most theologically sophisticated of the gospels says My fathers house has many mansions (note many. Not few for the few who go through the narrow gate) How many atheists funerals has that contradictory verse been read out at? Just to make us feel better and that our relative is not on his or her way to be tormented in the eternal barbeque. Ouch. Do the Christians in heaven actually give much of a damn for the tormented in hell? Even if it is their own silly fault they are there? If you have a son who dies in a drink driving accident if he was actually behind the wheel and responsible would his parents say well he is a silly fool I'm not going to mourn for him. Of course they wouldn't. Their grief would be all the more tormented and twisted. And it would go on and on and on. So this sermon just strikes me as ill and psychotic. It shows how people prefer false primitive answers to frightening questions (like what happens to us when we die) than doing the courageous thing and saying actually nobody knows what happens but that just makes our life here all the more valuable and our need to treat each other decently all the more imperative. Thank heavens the Christian God does not exist. Once again there is no love in this sermon. The more obsessed by hell a church becomes the more patriachal and authoritarian it gets.

I don't think this preacher has fully understood the biblical passage he is going on about. When Jesus talks about his brothers (and I think we should say sisters as well) he is not just going on about Christians. He is going on about everyone. Jesus if he was the God of love would not love Christians more than others. He would not applaud good works to them more than to others. If someone fed the hungry in a part of China or Africa in a place where there were no Christians he would applaud that just as much because he would love those people just as much. A loving God would not have favorites. And there are atheists (I am not talking about myself here) who have clothed the naked and fed the hungry and visited the sick and those in prison more often than this preacher or anyone else in his church and they are convinced that when they die they will just return to dust. They are not looking for a first class seat to heaven. And it seems this church with its continual sermons about sexuality and hell is in danger of forgetting a verse of Jesus which is fanatical and has terrible implications for them all and for many many others in this country and indeed for myself. Jesus did not tell the rich young man to give away ten percent of his property. He did not say be a good soul and give away a lot to the Oxfam shop. He said give away everything. Everything except for the bare bare minimum. "It is easier for the camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man (or woman) to get to the kingdom of heaven" This is not mysterious. It simply means if you are stubborn and remain rich with all your rich possessions and do not settle for a bare bare minimum you will go to hell. And be living kebab meat for all eternity. Why isn't this verse highlighted. Because it is embarrassing. Because St Helens is a church in the city of London and people have nice cars and nice suits and nice electronic gadgets when Jesus clearly wants people to live off a bare minimum. In America of course it can get far worse with Evangelists and their private jets. If you are a rich man or woman then, according to the Jesus in the Bible you will go to hell. Much more comforting to talk about Gay people going to hell. Much more comforting to talk about atheists going to hell. Jesus talked about the abuse of money and power (which will lead to hell) four or five times more often than sin in sex or marriage or lustful thoughts. And despite what this preacher says he never said that you only get to heaven by helping Christians out. If Jesus was a totally loving God all people of all faiths and none would be his brothers and sisters. But then when you open up the Topic of Gods judgement it becomes an ever more complex can of worms due to the different emphasis of different parts of the bible. How much easier to talk about gays and trans people and atheists going to hell (before you go home after giving your sermon and go to bed pray and make love to your wife)

If the preacher here had been born in Iran he would in all probability be a Muslim now. The idea of Jesus being god and man and not just the prophet before Mohammed would be utterly confusing and blasphemous. The idea of a holy trinity utterly confusing. Hence the Muslim saying "You Christians say you have one God but actually you don't you have three" The chances are he would be a Muslim preacher rather than a Christian one as convinced of Islam as he now is of Christianity. If I was to talk to this Muslim version of William Taylor and present him with a "theoretical" Christian version of himself would he think that this Christian version of himself was damned to the Muslim hell? After all there are plenty of Korans knocking around London and he had ample opportunity to turn from Christianity to the true faith. I am sure some Muslims tried to make him see sense but in his arrogance he ignored them. It is not just Christian ministers who can play the game of terrorising people with stories of hell. I found no love in this sermon. Just the authoritarianism and spiritual fascism that springs from such McDonalds doctrines. It is loving to warn people about real dangers. All parents know that. Not terrorise them (including vulnerable teenagers and children not to mention emotionally vulnerable adults) about terrifying places that do not. And we all have an inner child in our psychology that is impervious to logic that can be utterly terrorised by these fables. A loving God would constantly put us in scenarios where we would spiritually grow up. They would often not be blissful but they would make us grow. Each life we had would end in a report. Not a final judgement. A loving God would punish but as a means to spiritual maturity and growth and not just a completely pointless and moronic end in itself. If someone refused to become loving no matter what scenario they were put in and no matter what teachers they were given (as a minority would) then God would annialate them with a very heavy heart. But that termination of the opportunity to spiritually grow would be punishment enough. If we wanted someone to suffer more hell than that we would have to look very carefully at our need to punish our enemies for our own gratification as God would too if he needed to punish furtherly. No one deserves heaven and no one deserves hell yet these are the only two options this sesame street fundamentalist version of Christianity allows for (even if there are levels of hell) It makes an utter mockery of the complexity of human beings and their motivations and morality that there are only these too options Geography even more than personal choice effects what God we believe in. And turn to. And also the fact that if we believe and are very indoctrinated from an early age our spiritual beliefs build up and mould our brains so that for some people (not all) they literally cannot biologically digest ideas which are alien to their faith.

In the light of what Jesus taught from this passage. What will be Christ's judgement on those with profound learning disabilities who are unable to comprehend Christ's teachings?
@richardrickford3028
@richardrickford3028 6 ай бұрын
I think you raise a very very valid point. Volunteering at various houses for people with learning disabilities was something which really made me question my Christian faith. Many people with learning disabilities - especially profound ones live in hell already considering the horrendous abuse they suffer (including being rejected sometimes by their parents and despite this phrase being in the community actually leading a very ghettoised and patronised existence) What have they in particular done to deserve this rather than me or you? Although their lives are made worse by the abuse of other human beings that in no sense cancels out the fact that God allowed the profound learning disabilities to happen to them in the first place. I think what the honest Christians say is that they really don't know the answer to this (I admire Christians who admit their ignorance on many topics rather than give glib McDonalds answers or try and switch round the goal posts and talk about something else. I think Christian and atheist alike we should all be saying "I don't know" a lot more often especially bigoted fundamentalist Christians and atheists) Christians can have this "It will all be explained in the schoolroom in the sky" type attitude. It is their right to have that attitude but to me it is not good enough. There is a Christian called James Jones who says that some people can't become Christians and others won't. There is a strong element of truth to this. But it is also true with God. Why did God not stop people being born with profound learning disabilities (or indeed children with bone cancer) is it because he can't - or because he won't. My take is that if he can't he is not all powerful and if he won't he is not all loving) Some people could say that people with profound learning disabilities automatically go up to heaven perhaps with all the still born babies or those who die at the age of two, This strikes me as rather unfair too. Perhaps if they had lived longer and had a non profoundly learning disabled mind they would have disregarded the Christian faith and ended up in the eternal barbeque instead. Christians can claim that it is all worked out and they would have chosen God anyway. This to me is just speculation. It says nothing like this in the Bible and if it really is all neatly planned out like this then the Bible really does need to say something about it - not as vague poetry but a very very deliberate statement. To me life is incredibly random and some people through no divine plan are dealt a much much better hand than others. We are all free to choose. But not all from the same menus. Some peoples menus are a lot posher and have far more course options than others. Still it is random rather than unfair and the brutish randomness makes people seek spiritual explanations because they are more comforting. As a species we often prefer a clumsy or bad explanation than the trauma of admitting we don't have an explanation at all. Having said that we all have our unequal hand of cards which we must play as generously and lovingly as we can and treat other people in the same way we want to be treated ourselves. Yes yes this is what Jesus said. I know that. But Confucius said it two hundred years before Jesus and the Buddha said it two hundred years before Confucius.

Yes the word of God declares it will fully accomplish all that God wants it to do and will not return to Him void. I sat under the wonder teaching of Dick Lucas after God save me late in my life at a local Church here at Hockley Evangelical in Hockley. So I came into St Helen's on The Tuesday Lunch time meeting. I also came and listen to you as well William you might not remember me I did speak with you on a couple occasions. I had to have a very bit operation in 2010 it is called a whipples procedure I'm still here on planet earth. God still trying to get me a better reflection of Jesus Christ guess I must be a slow learner or He got something for me to do. It was so nice to hear about Dick Lucas I had know idea He start with such low attendance. God can do more than we imagine.Dick Lucas has a very spot in my Heart as do you as well William. I was truly bless by going to the lunch time meeting. God bless all at St Helen's.

The Bible in Ecclesiastes 3:20. And 12:7 days : All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all return to dust. - Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return toGod who gave it. At His coming at the end, He will resurrect His believing followers and give them eternal life as He promised them. The non believers will also be resurrected only to show them their Folly, sinful , unbelief and His splendor, and glory. and fire will burn them to ashes for ever. Psalm 104:35 ;Malachi 4:1,3 ;Deut. 4:24 ; Job 22:20 ; Isaiah 1:28 ; Revelation 20: 9,10,15. ;2 Thessalonians 1:7-9. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the LORD...
