@@djmambito2 that’s partially correct. At the highest signal to noise ratio, asp does a good job removing any minor distractions and only adds a minor digital sound. As the ratio decreases, it sounds more and more like digital. When it falls below a certain threshold, it completely loses

not sure why there would ever be a feature called Super DX on a VHF\UHF radio that is NOT "all mode" to start with. Maybe I'm not the brightest "Ham" in the world but is FM a weak signal\DX mode? Are we trying to make it into one? I have never one time in my ham experience thought to myself what kind of DX or weak signal can I go find in the FM mode where working without a squelch makes me want to rip whats left of my hair out by the white noise... What am I missing here? I'm open to be educated... I have literally been TRYING TO SPEND (and literally this drive for a new radio is why I watched this video, I'm still searching...) a $1K-$2K budget on a worthy VHF\UHF radio for three+ years... Just waiting for the right radio to come along. Closest radio so far to tick all the boxes is the IC-9700, unfortunately the 9700 has no V\V U\U OR General coverage receive both of which are deal breakers at that price point. The Russian design "Wolf" radio is close and looks very nice and a few other Chinese radios almost fit the bill but severely lack in the VHF\UHF Transmitter\Amplifier sections to the point they are deal breakers too.

Hmm usually when one person hears something that the other person can't, it's the other person who gets their hearing checked.
@DurakeMe6 күн бұрын
I think it has its use case, but I don't think it will be widely adopted. I remember Motorola had one called "Companding" - It's been a while since I've touched my 8000 and 8500, so I don't know if it's optional on the APX or XTS series but I do very much remember using it on their business series radios. Myself and a few of my friends actually had it enabled, it worked well on repeaters you're somewhat close to and you just didn't want to hear the static or random noise/flutter generated on VHF from nearby street lamps. It didn't sound anything like what this radio sounds like, I'd say this sounds more pleasant than what M had, more "digital" sounding like you mentioned in your first video about this. I'd say naming the feature "Super DX" is a bit misleading when you can hear stations better without it enabled lol.. Hopefully they release a fix for it where once the signal reaches a certain threshold it will deactivate, maybe potentially reactivate if the signal is above the threshold after x amount of time.
@MisterTwister556 күн бұрын
Agreed 100%. I've messed with those settings in Motorola but I didn't find them useful there either. I remember getting weird artifacts there too so I never played with it again. You're spot on with the irony in the name - it works less well as the signal gets weaker. So like what's the point
@mediocreman26 күн бұрын
Definitely removing some of the good sound as well, but for strong signals a lot of people will really like the ASP.
@MisterTwister556 күн бұрын

@rash04016 күн бұрын
being a digital lover, the ASP sounds amazing. now to make a new digital capable WITH ASP for the analog side. may have to upgrade the shack
@MisterTwister556 күн бұрын
I think you'll really enjoy it. You'll just have to be constantly turning it on and off if signal/audio quality of the other stations is fluctuating. This video shows it fails when the signal gets pretty weak. What I need to test next is when a signal is weak into a repeater but I can receive the repeater strong. That should be 100% audio processing there. Very interested to see the results.

I was wondering if it would act this way. Digital works clean fairly deep into the noise then... poof, gone. :) Can't do the math anymore in there, somewhere, so it just drops out. Thanks.

I like it. Still a lot more expensive than it's competitor, the IC-2730A. And a pretty basic screen. But I still like it. The reason people are calling it the 150RASP is because their digital signal processing is called ASP. So it's more like a 150R-ASP? Haha. Most likely it was their marketing team that wanted to make sure that people knew there was something special about these, although from what I've seen and heard so far, it doesn't sound very good and can make the voices sound worse at times.

Yes--for barely or partially intelligible signals, I'd like to hear examples with the squelch open. @MisterTwister557 күн бұрын
@@sramsdellwdm maybe. The squelch was open such that I could hear the signal 100% fine when ASP was turned off. Yaesu claims ASP increases sensitivity so the squelch shouldn’t have to open more. I think all the processing occurs on the audio side but I’m not sure yet. The ASP almost is a squelch of sorts but for audio. If the audio signal gets too close to the noise, a gate kicks in and shuts it down completely. Adjusting this squelch would help
@1912rider7 күн бұрын
and that is my chief complaint with digital, it's either there or it's not where with analog you might be able to pick out important information that might be way down in the noise. The NR on that rig seems to work in a very similar fashion to my FTdx10. The algorithm needs to have enough signal to work with in order to figure out what is signal and what is noise. On the dx10 it works great under good signal conditions, but mostly I leave have it set off or at levels of 1-3 (out of a maximum of 9 levels, I believe) to achieve useful/tolerable results.

From your testing it appears that the Asp function works well if there is already a good signal present. I just bought 2 of these radios and a FTM-500 and have not even taken them out of the boxes yet. Overall I think these 150's are real nice full dual band radios that have come into the market. Perhaps these are not what was marketed as "pulling out the weaker signals" . But it still is an excellent feature that improves enjoyment even if it works best on good signals that I'm likely going to have >85% of the time anyways. If you want to sell it - let me know I might find another go kit to stuff it into.
