Thanks for the videos! I love the HondaJet with my MS Flight Sim. In the sim I land at Block Island (Rhode Island) which has a 2500’ runway). Taking off is difficult but I do it. Is this an inaccuracy in the sim or do you think it’s possible if conditions were right?

Hi Don, please explain something to me. Why did you communicate with the tower and speak to them at the time of landing, but general aviation propeller planes don't speak to the tower? Best regards
@ioptimizerealty16 күн бұрын
Great question. We could talk to ATC because we were on an IFR flight plan. Additionallly, we were on the warbird/turbine arrival. So the proceedures are different. Frankly, it is a lot less stressful. My brother, who you saw in the video, flew a Cessna in VFR last year and ended up holding for two hours with no autopilot. Crazy. So you know he was happty to come along with me. He's an airline pilot too.

@@ioptimizerealty Q1: why would VFR NOT have to talk to ATC? (Whereas IFR does?) (I’m a novice, so please pardon my question if it sounds ignorant) Q2: if your bro had no communication w/ATC - how would he know where to circle for 2 hours w/no instructions?

Yes. The flames were a mock bomb run. Part of the show. 26:00 was a B52 On the NY Post story, that is correct. We just mentioned that building in one of our blogs. Amazing. It sold for 3% of the price it that it sold for in 2016.

I’m not a pilot, but he said ‘ready for takeoff.’ Shouldn’t he have said ‘ready for departure,’ and then the tower would respond (as they did) with ‘cleared for takeoff’? Apologies for the comment, I’m not trying to sound like a know-it-all, but this particularly stands out when emphasizing proficient communication.
@ioptimizerealty22 күн бұрын
Ready for takeoff is clear and concise. It works. Also, "Departure" is non-standard language which you do not want to use. Consider that there is a "Departure" controller and frequency that come immediately after the Tower controller and frequency. So, no, ready for "Departure" would not work.

Cool trip. Next pilot in the family?! 😊 ... One thing to add as working UATC in Germany: the lights on approach you regularly refer to are called papi, vasi are mounted on top of each other. How does (if) Honda help transition to the jet from piston engine? How many hours do you think, are needed for that at least? Regards.
@ioptimizerealty28 күн бұрын
Tom, good point about the lights. Thx. The leap from piston to jet is a big one. I would suggest turbine time in a turboprop first. I had a Meridian for 18 years and lots of hardcore flying in that before going to jets. And then, it was a serious, no joke, push. I had to earn my commercial and multi rating quickly before even going to the 18 day FlightSafety course. They give you two days off in the 18 days, and I was smart enough to come in on those days anyway on work the desktop sims they had. I passed my checkride on the first try, but it's a serious 2.5 hour checkride that is easy to fail, and some did in my class. Then, the FAA mandates 50 hours of mentored flights in the real plane. Insurance companies will probably ask for at least 100 hours, especially if you are coming out of a piston. They may not even underwrite the policy. So figure a lot of mentored hours and honestly, it is worth it as it could save your bacon. Jets are fantastic, but it is a different kind of flying then a piston, or even a turboprop. Don

If you do this flight regularly you know you'll prob get max 16,000ft and a long route because of NYC arrivials. But if you file 10,000ft hopefully you get a straighter line into NYC.

Rob, thanks for the tip. The downside of 10k is the fuel burn, but maybe with less of a zig zag routing, it will even out. Don

I am sure that will cut your learning time. Plus, there are so many KZbin videos now, instead of the books I had back in the day. So drive on, you will get there faster than you think. Don
