In the UK, the standard fingering for the high Eb is fingered like the high D, but instead of adding the left-hand B, we add the G# on the left hand.

That was an awesome tip concerning D2!!!! 👀 I'm a newbie and have been feeding on a lot of instructional videos, but I have not come across this tip since I have started my flute journey. Thanks a bunch for that. I will try to remember to pass that tip on. 👍😎

I've been playing wind instruments for most of my life now, mainly Flute and Sax . I have had an Oboe for years just sitting doing nothing. every so often I pick it up and give it a go. I got the reeds and embouchure sorted but found I was always almost exploding whilst playing. I decided a few weeks ago that I would stick it out and try to play more often thinking I just needed to strengthen my lungs, to no avail. I have just stumbled upon this video and wow, it really works, I can play now with continuity. I will be back for more tips thank you.

Many oboists are not taught to pucker. This results in inferior tone. It is of paramount importance to pitch the reed in the region C to C#. One should learn to play the reed without holding it. (place your hand so you can catch it when it blows out). NEVER use your teeth to hold it!!!! Good tone starts with long notes. Before a concert, the father of modern oboe playing, Leon Goosens, played one note for an hour. There is a LOT you can do with one note - dynamics, vibrato none or different speeds and depths, articulation patterns and TONE.

I have recently started playing the oboe and felt like I was exhausted after practicing. Out of breath, winded, and needing to stop… this helped me so much. After following this advice I am much more comfortable. Made so much sense!

Lots of good advice here, but why do you play the usual conformist/fashionable jazz style that's played by lots of trumpet players ? You should listen to Ruby Braff ,or Bobby Hackett,or Red Allen and try to develop an individual approach.

Sorry. Totally wrong. This creates a tense embouchure, bad sound.

List your credentials. Like anyone is going to take YOUR advice over Carrie's, who's credentials speak for themselves: Minnesota Orchestra Baton Rouge Symphony Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra Baton Rouge Opera Oboe professor at University of Wisconsin River Falls, and taught at UW Eau Claire, and Ball State University

All these fingerings are different from and simpler than what I have been taught. Would my oboe being a thumbplate be the difference?

I'm very proud to say, I have watched and learned from Carrie's vidoes and consequently decided to seek professional help from Macphail for Oboe, and Carrie was prescribed as my teacher. What are the odds, I figured she was in a different state, but no, less than 15 miles from me! What a gift! Great teacher! Down to earth, honest oboist. She'll take your crap Emerald reed and shave it down with a knife, you'll wonder what she is doing to your precious reed and it comes back 20x better. She will tell you oboe secrets you won't find online. She is a genius, amazing teacher, honor to work with. She's the real deal.

as an oboe player in 8th grade, i dont know if this is right but it works fine for me, if you're on d sharp then all i do is switch my finger on the 4th key to the 5th key and then d comes out. dont know if that made sense but yeah lmao

The conductor was pretty good. The rest of the group was OK.The ending could have been done better. It’s too bad that school teachers can’t think outside the box. But, that’s why they are school teachers. Amateurs.

Nice. The problem with the Suzuki school is artistry and understanding of music. Effort was there, but very far from reality. Students are not to be blamed. Suzuki is popular because it allows low level players to teach and play. Listen to real professional recordings. This performance was bad, but the student didn’t know any better because the teacher sucks. She should quit and do gardening or snow plowing.

I've been playing the trumpet for about 8 years now, and my sound has been waning for the last few months now. I've been getting self concious while playing about what I should do with my air support (not as in nervous, as in I'm thinking actively about my air support). Just doing the basics from this I've had some of the best practice I've had in months. Thank you. The specific difference this made was that it made me realize that once I was getting concious about it, I was engaging a lower part of my core than I should have btw.
