Is it possible to trick you DVR into thinking you computer is a screen by connecting the output to a capture card and plugging that into you computer and go to a recording software and record what the DVR shows?

I, once had DIRECTV for 8 1/2 years. From Monday 9/30/13- Saturday 4/16/22 thanks a lot to DIRECTV chose to drop OAN on Monday 4/4/22 I love dish!! They have the remote locator feature and they have the magnification feature too!!! One thing DIRECTV’s Genie remote can’t do dish remote can do like.” The voice search feature and the buttons light up in the dark, to customizing the diamond button.” I got the double diamond button as a toggle switch for the magnification feature. And the diamond button to change the aspect ratio of the channel to fit the tv screen. Good luck trying that with your DIRECTV Genie remote. DIRECTV is so expensive and dish is cheaper than DIRECTV!! The hopper 3 out beats DIRECTV’s Genie DVR all the way around!! With the Hopper 3 you have 16 tuners you can record up to 16 shows at the same time you can’t do with the Genie DVR from DIRECTV. I go with dish any day!! Good luck with the Genie from DIRECTV!!

I have been wondering if buying a reciever and dish from Solid Signal would work. I will be pointing it out a window as my apartment complex won't allow me to mount outside.

Yes, it should work as long as your complex window is pointing southwest and has a clear view of the DIRECTV satellites (99, 101, and 103). You can purchase an SL3 SWM LNB and dish along with an HR54 receiver and this should work fine for a 1 receiver setup.

Unfortunately, recordings are encrypted to the access card that recorded them. Therefore, they cannot be transferred over to a Linux machine and viewed. The program simply wouldn't load as it cannot be viewed without the access card.

Is the power supply replaceable or does it require some pretty high level skill?

It requires soldering experience, and plus I’m not sure if the specific components are readily available on the market. You may be better off getting a replacement power supply, if available at all. At that point, you can buy a replacement 24 online or get a free replacement from directv. Although, it is debatable one whether or not they are generous enough to give you another HR24. You may need to rant on the phone or specifically request a like-for-like replacement.

@@CardboardGuy I am more interested in getting the recordings off the hard drive. It sounds like that is a hopeless cause, or at least sufficiently difficult to just "move on". I've created my on media library using Plex and I was trying to move those old programs from the HR24 digitally, but it seems that the best that I can do is use RCA to get 480p quality. I tried using a USB adapter, but with very limited success. Thank you for answering my posts.

If the receiver does not function properly, you cannot watch any of your saved recordings since they are encrypted and can only be accessed by inserting the access card into the receiver that recorded those recordings. In other words, the recordings are strictly encrypted to the receiver ID that originally recorded them. You are hopeless without a working box. Although, try to troubleshoot the box and see why it doesn’t work. The power supply may have failed.

First off I want to say good job at this. Downloaded directions can be scary as hell. Especially with the chance of bricking your equipment With that said I think you should relook back at your directions (including the comments asked) and include everything you had based on your own experience Oddly enough I found that certain hard drives do matter so you should focus a little more about those tools used like your USB drive and what the HD specs were for the current drive and the one you were upgrading to Try putting your files on a cloud drive like MEGA and see if it'll host it so others can grab it. I hope this experience helps you to do more things in the future. One of my first hacks was Xbox, then Direct TV and then Nintendo Wii and DS Glad you are learning how to do this at a young age, you should be proud of your accomplishments. Regardless of how others perceive it. Good luck in your future endeavours

@@CardboardGuy Also, if you get the HD model number etc, that would be helpful. Like with laptop and desktop memory. You have to have them in exact pairs. It's good to include everything including details inside on the chips or by using software like CPU-Z etc. Those programs can read model number and latency etc. Any data inside the box absolutely helps replicate the hack and those who want to do it and buy the exact working models just in case. Cable boxes get updated all the time and model numbers change etc. Ya know? I know I am repeating myself by documentation was key for me imo Anyway sorry for the long rant. Again great job

I need directions for an antenna I put up last year and didn't use cuz DirecTV gave me a bunch of discount and I could afford it, I've been having so many issues with the satellite signal major voice delay of 30sec.+ I kept getting a message streaming service isn't available right now and it was scanning on the bottom! I don't have DTV stream, I was promised 20$ off & they never applied it so I went out on the balcony and unscrewed the wire from the satellite going to my apartment wall & screwed the cable to the antenna and the other side that goes into my apartment, technically it should work unless the antenna is shot from being in below zero and 103° heat or those wires can't be reused?

Do you have directions or a video installing an antenna unscrewing the DTV feed and using cable that's going into the wall? Possible antenna doesn't work or I should have unscrewed both male and female? Looked like he just used extender and extra cable? Definitely did something wrong

What hardware did you specifically use? i.e. was there anything special about those usb hard drive adapters that you used? Also, I have a spare laptop but it has an operating system on it (hard drive still intact) so would the process be to change BIOS to make it boot from usb and then have g part on that usb? An actual desktop PC is recommended since I demonstrated with simple 2.5” HDDs which use less power. The hardware or specs doesn’t matter, you can perform this on an old Windows XP PC from the past! (Lol) Yes, for BIOS, boot from USB. You can even try burning GParted onto on a CD/DVD and boot that way. Once in, just perform the steps as normal. If you have issues with the hard drives showing up in GParted try performing a graceful shutdown again with both of them. If still no luck, your best bet is using a desktop PC. When I tried using a laptop with bigger 2TB HDDs, they wouldn’t be recognized. When I put them in my desktop PC, GParted automatically recognized them..

To retain DVR recordings, yes. But, what’s the receiver model? It may lock down preventing you from watching anything if you do it incorrectly.

@@stephentaylor3437 if it’s the HR24 then yes just shut it down and unplug it before cancelling. Also be sure to refresh the receiver online (your online account) before cancelling so the HR24 gets the latest signal.

What was your old software with the cyclone logo in the swm setup?

The receiver in that video runs the newer software with the DIRECTV logo representing TPG and AT&T, which is 0xOD49. The older cyclone logo software was 0x0cea.

Nope, it glitches and won’t accept the file format that DIRECTV DVRs use. The older versions of GParted, on the other hand, do accept the file format and allow the cloning of one drive to the other. This video instructs to use an older version. Although I don’t recommend it, you could try a newer version. Please let me know if it works to your expectations. I personally don’t recommend doing it since it could result in a corrupt drive that can’t be cloned and/or preserved. Therefore, I would do it on a drive with recordings you don’t care about.

I downloaded linuxlive usb creator and pointed it to the gparted 3.7.7. it gave me a msg about it using the latest 1. i did point it to the 3.7.7 iso n thats what comes up on booting from the flash. tried booting to it and I click enter for the default setting option. but I get a msg saying "unable to find a medium containing a live file system". I took the Windows hard drive out the laptop. only thing connected to it is the dvr drives and a wireless mouse dongle. any ideas? Should I try unethbootin to install gparted 3.7.7 on the usb flash?

tried yumi n it just shows a flashing cursor and blank screen when I try to boot to usb flash drive. what ver of yumi you use? maybe you could do a video with setting up the usb stick. I dont know if it matters but I'm using a sandisk extreme 64gb drive fat32.
