This really annoys me with most of the fanfics that the population of the galaxy's lack of knowledge with the Sith as there should be history books that there's at least Jedi&Sith Wars. If they know about the Jedi, then they should know about evil or fallen Jedi that became the Sith. Even if they don't know about the latest Jedi&Sith, the galactic public would know of infamous names like Revan and Exar Kun being Sith Lords that had caused galactic scale wars thousands of years ago. Every over some hundred years for minor wars and several hundred years for major wars plus galactic scale wars every over a thousand years. So it's confusing why the general public has no idea who or what the Sith are as they know that there's bad or fallen Jedi and could had easily labeled them as dark side Jedi or Sith. The entire galactic history had been about the battle between the Jedi&Sith typically with the Jedi siding with the Republic and the Sith having their own empire. So having a Sith or fallen Jedi in charge of the Republic should had been general knowledge that it's a bad idea for a Sith or Jedi to be put in that position of power.

Yoda and obi wan knew right away… they literally watched him kneel before palpatine in revenge of the sith. They were the first Jedi to know and live

Nah Bail totally knew in the (now legends, fml Disney) novel Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, he ends up on Alderaan pursuing a rogue senator and of course runs into Bail. Bail nearly wets himself worried that Vader would sense the baby. He doesn't and the plot moves on but Bail totally knew who Vader was.
