We prefer Preen for mulch installs. When you put weed barrier underneath mulch, the mulch eventually breaks down and turns into soil. This creates a scenario where fertile soil ends up on top of the weed barrier in a few years, allowing weed seeds to germinate and then grown on top of the weed barrier. We do install landscape fabric underneath rock, though. Obviously rock doesn't have this problem haha. Thanks for asking!

It basically allows water to flow between the walls. The biggest reason walls fail is due to hydrostatic (water) pressure which builds up behind a wall. The main drainage is actually the drainage rock behind the wall, so the drainage tubes are kind of a back-up. If a wall is built right, you shouldn't see lots of water coming through the pipe outlets.
