Years after this documentary was made, Mary had a major health scare: she was hospitalized forever pneumonia, a disease I had been hospitalized myself. Luckily, both of us have recovered.

Biomet who made the hip replacements, were sued by many people including Mary Lou Retton due to adverse aftereffects from this surgery. Metallic blood poisoning, and cysts and infection around the metal hip parts to name a few problems . Mary Lou had to get 2 other surgeries on her hips to rectify the damage from this hip replacement system which didn’t do test studies before they stuck this stuff inside humans!!!!

I had total hip replacement in my left hip a year ago. It has changed my life! I had hereditary osteoarthritis, and the pain was so bad for years. I never got injections. I just guess I never knew and just put up with the pain. I found the best ortho surgeon money could buy in my area. He has literally given me my life back.

I was never the level of Mary Lou Retton but I was a gymnast and a gymnastics coach for many many years and now it's 65 yes joint pain is a norm hip pain is the Norm hands and feet are all painful and it all is becauseof the abuse of the body in gymnastics what I was subjected to and what I subjected my gymnast kids to is basically traumatizing the body to achieve unhealthy levels of competition

Just started watching documentaries on Mary Lou which after seeing it she is as down to earth of any human you would like to meet. Hearing recent health scare brought me to this which this was where her health difficulties became the battle she is still fighting today. I never paid attention of her success after 84 but she lived a very fruitful life that is still going spite of the heath ailments she's going through. Keep fighting Mary you are still loved.

Mary Lou will always be America’s sweetheart. The most infectious smile I’ve ever seen. She could be my daughter but I remember seeing her smile for the first time at the Olympics. All I could say was “WOW”. I just sort of sat there watching the TV stunned!

Hey I saw your youtube video about the gunshot wound and I got a question, what are the things an emergency room should be doing if I go there after a gunshot wound? I live in Detroit, Michigan, I got shot back in January and the bullet went through my right bicep to my ribs. one of my friend drove me to the hospital within 15 minutes after I was shot but I still lost a lot of blood, I was at the point of passing out when I arrived at the hospital. The hospital did a couple xray and gave me some IV but they didn't do any surgery or any type of treatment. some doctor came and told me that they not taking the bullet out right now because it might do me more damage than good so i said okay but can you do something about my hand and they scheduled a nerve reattachment surgery for 2 days later and the night before the scheduled day nurse came and told me I'm good to get discharge and to follow up later the surgery. I was there for 3 nights and they didn't touch them 3 gunshot wounds not even a single time, they didn't clean it and didn't do any type of wound care. I was there for 3 days bleeding out on that hospital bed and I was on tylenol for the pain. So all I wanna know is all this careless stuff they did, is any of this they were not supposed to do by law?? Because I'm trying to file a lawsuit against them.

In 2018, Dr Parsley did both my hips. I still remember -- upon learning that he had done Mary Lou Retton's hips -- I asked him: "Will I be able to do vaults and somersaults after my surgery?" He told me -- "No. But you will be able to walk without a cane." And that was a good enough result for me. And to this day, I thank the Good Lord Above for bringing Dr. Brian Parsley into my life. It truly was -- as the former gymnast (and fellow Longhorn) put it -- "MIRACULOUS." It was basically a life-changing event. Thanks again to Dr Parsley and the staff at the M-HOSH (Memorial Hermann Orthopedic and Surgical Hospital)

I cannot express how much this is like me. I’ve dealt with this for 17 years, and now I am two weeks post surgery. It affected every aspect of my life, as a fitness, instructor and personal trainer, and most importantly, wife and mother. Every activity that I did revolved around “my hip “. Every vacation was misery, if it involved walking walking or hiking, on the beach. Every day at work was worse than the day before I stopped being able to do basic things at home. If anyone here found this and is considering hip replacement due to hip dysplasia and repeated labral tears, I highly recommend pulling the trigger and getting the surgery
