It's called a keyway. The groove in the crank pulley aligns with the crank shaft and locks it in time.

It’s 100% those rollers I had the same thing with my Subaru EJ 25 and did the whole timing belt job I try to cut corners and use one sheet AutoZone bearing and within a week. It already busted for some reason Subarus only like Subaru parts you might be able to get away with a few different stuff aftermarket, but most of the time they throw fits.

I had a little 78 Toyota pick up with that drivetrain. Had a well tuned Webber carb, exhaust header, and nice exhaust. Thing ran like a top. Would cruise 80 down the freeway in 5th gear. Always liked the idea of one of these pop top chinook’s. Looked at one a few weeks ago. It was to far gone unfortunately. Rotten roof. Rotten floor. Trashed inside, plus rusty floors in the cab. To bad.
