What a wonderful time it was to live in the city. Less advertisements, less traffic all were synced to perfection almost. Poeple were patient, they would listen to you sincerely. I lived in the city throughout my life, but still never got to see the city my father got to see. I wish that we could get our glory back.

Kolkata is not a city of joy with decorated people now. Instead, it has become a city of dupes, 420 garbage and most annoyingly, Biharis and their culture.

The 2nd time in my life I ever visited Kolkata was back in December 2001, during the time of Christmas and New Year holidays. I was there in West Bengal to visit relatives from my father’s side of the family and I remember how my family, family-friends, relatives and I crossed the Bangladesh-India border by bus to get to Kolkata from here in Dhaka. In total, we were a group of 3 families : my family consisted of me, my parents and my little sister, my family-friends consisted of my father’s late business partner, his widow, his son and his daughter and among the relatives… were my father’s maternal uncle, his wife and their younger son. It was the Shyamoli Poribohon’s air-conditioned bus that took us to Kolkata and brought us back here in Dhaka. Back in those days, the only 2 ways to get to Kolkata from Dhaka was either through bus or through train. My little sister and I, along with our father’s late business partner’s children never rode on a local bus before, that was the very first time we ever did and even though it took us an entire day to reach the Bangladesh-India border by bus, it was still an enjoyable experience regardless. Kolkata maybe the provincial capital of West Bengal but in terms of everything, they are still way ahead of Dhaka, which is the capital city of Bangladesh and my birth place. The Christmas trees, lights and decorations on display and for sale at the Kolkata Super Market were what surprised me because here in Dhaka, many supermarkets including both the DCC Markets located in the posh upper class neighbourhoods like the Gulshan area, never used to keep Christmas items on display/for sale back in those days. Almost every person from my parents’ and grandparents’ generation here in Bangladesh frowned upon Christmas celebrations because this country is predominantly Muslim and they were all staunch believers of Islam. Even in a religiously and ethnically diverse city like Kolkata, my parents (specially my father) and my father’s maternal uncle tried to keep us (me, my little sister, his late business partner’s children and my paternal uncle) away from celebrating Christmas/buying Christmas items from the Kolkata SuperMarket. During the time of Christmas itself, my parents, my little sister and I had to be in Burdwan, which was my late grandfather’s birth place to visit relatives. My father’s late business partner and his maternal uncle stayed back in Kolkata with their families and continued to venture the city on their own while my family and I booked four train tickets to go to Burdwan, only for a few days. We didn’t face any issues inside the train but as soon as we got down from the train… we were almost crushed in-between by a huge crowd of other passengers who were also travelling by train. There were literally no spaces to walk on that footover bridge in Burdwan’s train station and that incident left my little sister traumatised. She was only 6 years old back in those days. We didn’t get back to Kolkata until, a few days after Christmas ended. Despite the Christmas ban that was enforced on us, we the girls (me, my little sister and my father’s late business partner’s daughter) were still able to buy other stuff from the Kolkata SuperMarket like Barbie dolls and giant bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk while the boys (my father’s late business partner’s son and my paternal uncle) were lucky enough to get their hands on Hot Wheels toy cars and giant bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk. All of us from 3 different families were also fortunate enough to visit some of Kolkata’s tourist attractions like : M.P. Birla Planetarium, Science City, Nicco Park, Kolkata Museum and the Kolkata circus that took place on the night of the New Year’s Eve; as soon as we came back from the circus, we were fortunate enough to go up to the roof-top of the hotel to witness the fireworks in the night sky, right after the stroke of midnight; it was officially, the 1st of January 2002. I still have the photos preserved inside that old album cover and it’s hard to believe, that it’s been 23 years since we’ve been on that family holiday to Kolkata together.

It feels so amazing to watch the roads of Calcutta the way they were 23 years ago. Park Street and St. Xavier's College, I would like to mention particularly, was stupendous because I can relate to it being a present student of that college.

Sir, i noticed Gubbay house at 4:28 and coincidentally your surname happens to be the same. Is that house named after you? 😅 Also, i am a Kolkata resident, born in 1996 and spent my whole life here. Although my family background is from Uttar Pradesh. My first visit in this zoo was back in 2001 when i was 5. I saw your reply in one of the comments and came to know this video was filmed in 2003. It felt nostalgic. My latest visit to this zoo was exactly 1 year ago on 18th of March, 2023. A lot has changed in this place.
