It would be cool if there was a linked database with user submitted ratings. It would require a bit of computing power but it would be enormously useful for quickly assessing an apps privacy policies for the privacy conscious. But I guess that might be a little too "convenient".😅

Awesome video and awesome tool! Although you've just made me want to fully give up my smartphone even more by going over all the stuff encompassed by all these categories. Love the increased little animated elements and whatnot, the tossed tablet and phone cracked me up, and the location precision bit was fantastic. I was going to express concern over the missing plant that's usually over on the left, but the camera angle revealed it was just in a different spot off-camera most of the time. Whew! Appreciate your effort and mindfulness in all your videos and your work to try and share what you learn. Edit: I'd love to see a video with info about cookies!

I keep a cheap Android tablet for when it *has* to be an app (e.g. managing my credit card). For everything else I keep a "thing" for a task. * I have a Tom-Tom for when I need Sat-Nav. * I have a high spec Canon pocket camera (which does 99% of what my old SLR did). * I have a high spec/high bit rate music player for music on the move. * I have a Kindle for something to read when waiting or travelling on public transport. And the phone? I have a flip phone which supports VoLTE so I can use 2G/3G/4G for voice. Multi-factor authentication? Text messages. Job done.

I just can ditch my smartphone... Because where I live(France) most if not all banks do require their smartphone app for managing your bank account and transactions, also more and more of our national services are designed with smartphone in mind, they designed these without thinking that maybe some people don't own a smartphone, and I just reduce my screen time, my smartphone is still useful so I'll keep it and it's also useful for watching my locally stored movies and videos, and my only internet connection is my 200GB/month 5G plan for 10.99€/month and my phone basically replace my PC nowadays. :D But I completely respect those who can live without one and live a better life after that.

I got out of inpatient 2 months ago (it want my first time) and it had finally hit me that the one big factor that made me focus on myself during this time and it was the lack of social media. It was my number 1 usage of my phone. I would check instagram, twitter, tiktok. it made me miserable and constantly spiked my anxiety. Now I finally decided to switch to a "Dumb" phone. This wasn't the first time, but what was different was that I'm making the conscious decision rather than my parents taking my iphone away. Back then I hated it. I felt like I was missing out on what my friends were doing. But now I look back and can see during that time I connected more with my family, enjoyed music more, and wasn't worried that my friends weren't contacting me. Nowadays everyone uses social media to contact others. To be honest, it gives me an excuse not to worry. Telling myself "I just cant see if they are messaging me, and if it was important they would call" So far I am loving it. Even if it's not "convenient". Because lets be honest, if i NEED to purchase something, I can use my card or cash, rather than apple pay. If I NEED to send an email, I will sit down at a computer and send an email. If I NEED to go somewhere I already know where it is or I can look it up before I leave. I can now time manage in a healthier way and not be in a toxic cycle of picking up my phone for no reason. If you are finding and reading this comment. Do it. If something is important you can still get it done. Not everything in life has to be a convenience and not everything should be. Your time is valuable and living life without social media at your fingertips to briefly pacify yourself with surges of dopamine is NOT worth the luxury of a smart phone.

They're not “dumb phones”, they're called feature phones. I also call them basic cell phones. Do you think it's dumb to get a feature phone that doesn't constantly spy on your personal data and sells it to third parties, which does the job while being easier to replace, pretty much not addictive and that you can use without worrying when there's no working electricity? By the way, so-called smartphones aren't smart objects, they're S.M.A.R.T: Self-monitoring, analysis, reporting technology. The letters 'S' and 'M' could also stand for surveillance and monitoring.

The 2-3 year battery lifespan is certainly an average, so if you don't use them all the time, or you just got lucky with the battery gods, that could explain it. But there is no doubt that a large amount of people need to replace these ever 2-3 years just because that battery isn't of any use.

Many dumbphones do have GPS capabilities if that’s a deal breaker. The Nokia flip I keep coming back to has GPS and KZbin, which I use for music and to listen to vids like this while working, so everything I would “need” aside from talk and text is still available without the social media and game temptations. You just gotta do the homework.

I'm going through a compramise. I'm reducing what I do with my phone, with the end goal being to move most of it to my little laptop, and the phone's main uses to be a PDA, and modem for said laptop. As of right now, I got rid of my busy, widget packed home screen in favor of a pain one with time and date, about a dozen apps I use frequently as a lost instead of colorful icons, and the wallpaper is a selection of the current weather. Those dozen-ish apps - my calendar, my to-do list, telegram and Matrix, 1 app for social (the fediverse), my auth app, and one for streaming - TV and movies, not youtube or tik tok. Oh, and the Playstarion app, as that's my primary hobby. Everything else needs another step to go find. It's no longer sitting there, beckoning. I'll trim that down further over time. I've also lengthened the time between checking for new notificarions. My email client, for example, went from hourly to 6 hours and 12 hours (two different accounts). Email isn't meant to be fast. Why am I checking every single message as it comes in? That can't be healthy.

For our generation (later millennials and GenZ), smart technology came with the belief that you can do everything at the same time. Or that you need to be informed about every sad thing that happens in the world. This caused undue stress that I think is initiating this trend towards dumb phones or single-use technology in general. I have yet to do the transition myself, but I’ve ordered a couple of things and am looking forward to trying them out 😊

I asked myself "why am I answering work emails when i'm not working" or "why am I mindlessly watching videos at night or scrolling to see if someone has posted a new event in their life on social media." I was in constant stress about things that didn't matter in the moment. If I NEED to do something, I can still do it without a smart phone. This idea that everything has to revolve around the convenience of having it at your fingertips is so anxiety inducing. I hope you find something that works for you in easing the stress.

I've done some soft de-phoning steps the past few months, such as leaving my phone away from my nightstand while I sleep, and it's made a positive difference for my sleep habits! Bought a cheap alarm clock to replace the alarm function on my phone in the morning. One thing I also did was schedule do-not-disturb when I'm supposed to be sleeping so I'm not tempted to read social media apps then.

I despise when people only text you through social media when they have your phone number. And when they send you a text/WhatsApp and expect you to answer right away like you’re a telephone central, if the matter is important you can just call. People make it harder for others to have a healthy lifestyle while owning a smartphone

Soo - if I use VPN, it masks the content, but leaves the requested site info available, right? What if I'm using VPN + DOH or encrypted DNS queries - does this mask the requested site too? Because that's my impression - mask the requested site and the content travelling through is no longer of concern unless snooping/tapping in, right? So my ISP doesn't know that I'm accessing the orange site when using DOH?
@rejectconvenienceАй бұрын
Hmm... my understanding would be that the DNS server would just see the request from the IP address of the VPN server itself, not from yours assigned from your ISP, so the DNS query would still be "hidden" in a way. (Again, this is my understanding of DNS) As far as the first part of your comment, the VPN masks all things from your ISP, including the requested sites. The thing that hides the content but not the requested site is HTTPS. If you had no VPN enabled, the website you visit would be visible to the ISP, but the content itself would not be (assuming the site is using HTTPS). If you were going to a site using HTTP, the website and it's content would be visible to your ISP. When you use a VPN, both are masked, regardless of HTTPS/HTTP, so your ISP cannot see where you are going. That said, if you do HTTP sites, the VPN can then see where you're going, so just avoid HTTP sites in general.

YES - there's a piece by Nmesh called A face without eyes - i loved it instantly and at first didn't know why, but then it dawned on me when I recognized the slowed-down and reverbed 80's tune hidden in it. So yes, it's probably memory/nostalgia thing hitting harder than in normal form.

Thank you for the update, I thoroughly enjoyed this video as well as your original video about making the switch. I gave up owning a smartphone several months ago. Personally, I don't own a computer at all, mostly due to cost. I simply go to the library and use the computers there, it's how I pay my rent and bills. While I'm there I will borrow books and DVDs and take that time to chill out and relax. I will note though that doing so involves me driving for about 30 minutes, but it's also a town I work in for 2 of my weekly shifts, so I work it around that. I love my dumb phone, I bought an AGM M8 Flip, a super basic but rugged flip phone. It's durable and I love that aesthetic whilst also being very basic with no internet apps at all. I use it purely as a tool for communication as well as a calculator, alarm and calendar which has led me to feel much freer and with much less anxiety. I'm much the same in that I enjoy daydreaming now and boredom, but when I need to fill in time I usually read, write in a journal, draw or colour, work on a jigsaw puzzle or simply go outside. In terms of music I generally listen to FM radio, I live in Australia and I'm lucky to have a few local hard rock/metal stations that I enjoy, so when at home the radio will be on and of course when driving. I want to thank you for your inspirational and informative videos, I wish you all the best!
