1:30 my birthday, the statement came out on my birthday and i didn’t even know….. 26:01 if the event did come to EN I would feel like they’d have to change a couple words like savage and barbaric to words like wild or dangerous, also probably having to change the outfits of Nene and Emu to a much more fantasy one

I'm glad a video like yours exists to inform future players like me who doesn't know the context as to why this event specifically was pulled out. The only reason I knew this existed in the first place was because of an EN translation of Rui and Nene's backstory when they first met as kids. But I never dug any deeper other than the fact that there was potential appropriation. This is all in hindsight now, but here's just some of my thoughts now that I know more of what happened: - While I am sad that we won't be able to see the development of Rui and the backstory between him and Nene, just from the play's synopsis alone I immediately understood why people were enraged by the event's story, as well as ColorPal's decision to remove the event for global release. - Jumping off that point, there isn't going to be any easy way to try and resolve it because of the themes and topic alone. It's basically near impossible to try and reword things so that it wouldn't sound like it's going into that direction, there's gonna be some sort of settle racism to it. Like you said we'll never know how hard they tried, but honestly I can't see any other way besides rebooting the entire event (story, card arts, VAs, etc.). Considering how these things were set at least a year in advance, are being done months before the set release date, AND the fact that JP already had this event cause of the release gap between JP and Global, yeah, at that point you might as well take that loss. - I'm honestly surprised that they went into that type of topic, whether intentionally or unintentionally. It's obvious to me ColorPal didn't do it out of bad intentions, and while I'm not opposed to this type of topic, If done tastefully, I do agree that they shouldn't have done it in this style of game especially when it wasn't their story to tell. - It's pretty clear to me that the response from Petite sekai ep 6 is what lead to this decision seeing how they canceled it a month before the event's eventual drop. If that was the community's response when ep 6th aired, then ColorPal 100% went back to this event and tried to see what they can do now that they're fully aware of the mistake they've made. Which meant they would've had only about 5 - 6 months to work with. Pair that with my second point and I see an even more reason as to why they cancelled the event for global release. - Honestly they should've gone in the Princess Mononoke route IF they had that discussion when planning for this event. I think the overall themes from Princess Mononoke are way better suited for this type of game, and it would've fit well with everything they had. Sad that this happened, but at the very least it was a huge eye opener for ColorPal moving forward. They definitely learned that they must have the global community in mind when planning out any future content. Even more so now that the 1 year release difference actually matters should another similar mistake arise.

Pretty sure my last comment got deleted lol, although I’m not bothered by it since was overstimulated at the time and was literally just going on a rant. Honestly, I feel like I’m just upset I’ll never get the cards and see the character development. I take things at face value most the time since reading into things just makes things a lot more painful. Same goes with Pocahontas honestly. I never really thought of it as historical, just a funny little fantasy with pretty characters and fun music that taught a basic lesson. My only thought is that they could have made the story optional and added a warning or something to it. No rewards for reading the story, just simply leave it there for those who want it. It would also allow the character cards to be added too. Of course, I have no idea if it would work, but that’s the only compromise I could think of.

I feel like I should give a little clarification for why Dark Star Burning was disappointing since I didn’t have a chance to reply on my original comment. I thought Song of Silver was Phenomenal, so beautifully written and I adored Lan and Zen’s banter. So I had really really high expectations. For some reason I thought the sequel’s writing quality just wasn’t at the same level. And as I mentioned in my other comment it made no sense to me why Lan was so against Zen and acting like they’re suddenly on different sides when they never were. It just seems like a miscommunication that never should have happened because she went around half the book being like “I hate you, you’re evil, we’re on opposing sides” and then all of a sudden she relents in her stubbornness, they finally have a conversation and it’s all good. And then the pregnancy being revealed at the end was just like wait what, this is kinda cute and sad, but something about it just didn’t feel right, maybe partly because I didn’t expect something like that from a YA book and just generally didn’t want or expect it to end that way. I’m probably explaining this horribly 😭 I’m just struggling to find the proper words to express how I feel so hopefully that makes some sort of sense This book is just one of those times when the author’s choices just don’t match what I wanted or expected, like I don’t think it’s bad by any means, and with this and other books in the same category, I think you either like it or you don’t and personally I didn’t, but there was a lot I did like, especially Dilaya and Lan’s relationship. It was so cute how protective Dilaya was. Although there was an inconsistency I noticed where Dilaya’s missing arm suddenly switched sides. Probably not a big deal for most but even small inconsistencies can be annoying, like how did someone not catch this, but it’s a very minor issue compared to authors straight up changing and contradicting their own lore

Personally Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White was a little disappointing. The way Lan hated Zen for his choices in the first book was super annoying and the way she just suddenly forgave him and they hooked up. Like was all this really necessary? I wasn’t a fan of the pregnancy ending either. I feel like that’s such a weird choice for a YA novel. A translated Korean novel I would recommend if you haven’t read it already, Snowglobe by Soyoung Park. It takes place in a dystopian world where everything is frozen and there’s a dome where people can live comfortably but they have to be on TV, like their whole life is a reality show and the show has to do well or they’ll get kicked out. It has a few twists and turns and I really liked it. I think it’s supposed to be a duology but I have no idea when the sequel is supposed to come out, unfortunately

(i'm typing my comment while I watch so this may be long lol) congratulations on your graduation! one of the main reasons I suscribed is because I would love for more booktubers to discuss manga, manhua, webcomics, light novels, etc. but I feel that often when they branch out they lack a lot of context about the media they're reading which it's not necessarily a bad thing but sometimes it leads to a wonky analysis/review of what they're reading (also a danmei enjoyer 🤝🤝) I just started to track my reading this year because for years I felt like I read a book and then I was in a non-stop reading slump and while that has happened this year, tracking my stats has made me realize it's really not that bad I love listening to whatever people are reading, even if it's not something that particularly interests me, specially because I rarely read out of my comfort zone, so I love to know about books and stories I know I'd never get to know otherwise, so I'm looking forward to whatever you read 😄 I create content for my oshi account and also suffer from not wanting to edit things, in general the only thing that has worked for me is to just edit things that I enjoy or experimenting with the editing app, if I start doing things just to release content or for trends I immediately burnout lol e-readers are great! webtoons and manga definitely make it easier for me to read out of my comfort zone as well, would I read a contemporary book about volleyball? nop but you bet I have read haikyuu! maybe it's the visual element that helps but I completely relate clear and muddy loss of love is one I have yet to finish I think I got like 80 chapters in... I think I'll restart it when it releases physically looking forward to the next video 🤗

Thank you for your comment!! I loved reading it 🥰 I also read haikyuu with the EXACT same logic lol!! And I also tried JWQS a year or two ago and only made it about 100 chapters in, I think a big reason I'm enjoying it so much this time is because I'm reading it in a club that meets weekly so we read small but consistent chunks of it together! I hope many people pick it up when it releases in English officially ☺

Honestly, thanks for the unbiased perspective in talking about this. Honestly after watching, i now have more mixed feelings on this event. On one hand, i dont think that what the characters said in the story was meant to offend people, considering the fact that it's pretty much almost impossible to portray racism and anti-racist themes without, well, racism (imo. If some9ne actually manages that i will ne absolutely impressed). And like you said, there wasn't really a specific native/indigenous group that the cards were drawing their inspiration from and the alleged "colonizer" cards are more steampunk vibe. On the other hand, the devs apparently couldn't translate it to be more appropriate for the global release (tho again, like you said, we don't know how hard they tried) and that it really wasn't their place to tell this story. Tho the fact that the event was cancelled is kinda sad, but understandable now. Tho i still wonder why they dont have trigger warnings in this game's event stories, especially ones with themes of su1cidal ideation (niigo main story i think, as well as the story where kanade asked honami if she ever thought of wanting to disappear), as well as the death of loved ones (light up the fire), and emotional manipulation/abuse (mafumom, though based on the translation for mafuyu's most recent event she didn't realise she was emotionally manipulating her daughter and also didn't know what to do). There's probably more sensitive topics in this game that i cant think of rn, but if they were to (miraculously) bring back this event, i think they should implement trigger warnings with it in case.
@leahharlann
@leahharlann 6 ай бұрын
voluntary trigger warnings/content warnings are very much a Western thing from what I've seen. The only time I see those kinds of warnings in JP content is if it's required as part of its rating. I would certainly agree though that this game could use them!!

I'm back rewatching this review, and I'm suddenly struck that...there's no tangible reason for Ruying to distrust the rebels, aside from Meiya's opian addiction being kiiiind of related, is there? Which-it feels weird that Ruying would be mad at the rebels (her own people) more than the Romans who brought the drug into Pangu. In fact, I found Ruying's page-one distrust/outright hatred for her own people (outside of her family) to be SO strange as a character choice. It's not like she's a pariah in her city, or that tons of her people are siding with the Romans out of self-preservation; she seems to just...really dislike other Pangu people?? I dunno if I'm reading too much into it, but I can't help noticing the subtle ways she elevates the Romans when talking about them (internally), which makes her whole "grrr I wanna kill the Romans so bad" shtick feel Incredibly hollow.
@leahharlann
@leahharlann 6 ай бұрын
If I center her coward trait, it makes some sense that she would feel negatively towards the rebels; I recall a line or two where she thinks of them as fools pointlessly throwing away their lives, since they can't defeat the superior technology of Rome. I do agree that the way it's written in many places is very odd though. It's that whole vibe of Ruying feeling like two characters in one: the lone wolf girlboss and the cowardly traitor. It's one of those aspects that really highlights her hypocrisy.

Okay, I hope I am not super late. I just finished reading To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods right now and I just have so many issues with it. First of all, let me just say three things: 1. I really wanted to like this book 2. There are spoilers ahead cause we are talking. 3. These are all my opinions and I'm open to change, so please if you don't agree with something, feel free to let me know. One, the lack of world building. So, I don't know whether this is a common thing, but I usually have a hard time reading the world building section of fantasy because, even though I know it is an important part, I much rather would like to read the actual story. This book made me appreciate those long paragraphs of world information which I used to be forced to sit through in other fantasy books because, Good Lord, I had such a hard time imagining stuff here. When Ruying was talking about the various other kingdoms, I was sitting there like, damn, I would really like a map right now like how Poppy War by R F Kuang did. That made reading PW, so much easier, especially the wars and the battle strategies which various characters spoke about. It would also have been a very good way for readers to keep up with the various Empires. I hope they include a map in the second or third book. Second, I disliked the character building or lack their of. Yang Ruying kept on and on about how much she likes her sister and her friend Taoha, especially when Taoha is killed, and I'm sitting there like, I don't care. I don't know any of these people, Taoha was in, maximum, 2 scenes. All I know about her was from Ruying POV how good and brave she is. But why won't you show that to me? That would have also give the author a chance to expand the world and build it, hence bringing back my first point. Ru kept going on and on about how much she loves her family and all, but the scenes with her family and friends, other than Baihu and Meiya (to some extent), felt so hollow. But I really liked how the Emperor of Sihai's dynamic and death were handled. That was good, I felt something when the Emperor died. This brings me to my Third point. Some of the informations given to us felt so repetitive. Like I get it, you are in a bad spot and I know what's at stake, but why am I being fed this information again and again? Like I actually love when certain informations are given to me twice in books because I am a forgetful person but not at every step. Fourth, I just cannot cheer for Antony as a love interest. At this point only a miracle can save him in my eyes. I hope that miracle happens in Book 2. I know totally random, but his and Ruying's dymanic kind of reminds me of The Darkling and Alina from The Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo. But somehow Antony felt worse to me. I had some love for The Darkling at the end, but I have no feelings for Antony, UNLESS, again, some miracle happens in Book 2. Fifth, the stakes were set so high but the actions and the stuff that happened around the stakes did not at all feel climactic and grand, if you all know what I mean. The things that were happening did not meet the height stakes which were set. Last, and this is just me being very nitpicky, you made her an assassin for crying out loud. Why didn't you show how she got into people's houses or her in action as an assassin? I was really looking forward to that. Like what are you scared of? But I must say, the ending was good. It got me hooked for the next book. It is just her debut so I really hope and also I'm sure that her writing will improve as it is not bad, not bad at all. But anyway, these are my thoughts.

I dnf the book before the romance so after seeing all the reviews, it sounds like the wriitng is all monologue and not showing the romance or the assassin scenes. The time skip also makes no sense bc we are just told they are in love. I think the story would work if she was already an assassin and join the rebellion to protect her sister since her sister joined and feels conflicted over her growing feelings for Anthony then realized he's just as bad. I think if the author has to spoil the endgame then her romance writing isnt great or didn't put more into the love triangle. Shatter me series also change love interests but least the love triangle was interesting

@@leahharlanni agree. At least in acotar, there was 1 scene that hinted rhysand was her mate then they got together in the next book.
