Great angling especially on the pin and cane. I visited Horcott back in the winter after pike and the tench lake looked as close to perfect as you could of hoped for a tench venue. How did the fish respond to margin fishing or is it all at range ?
@DaleThomas15.26 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I didn’t catch on the cane and pin in the margin the only rod I didn’t catch on, mine came from a clear patch in the weed 11 wraps out. My son was catching just within float distance but all the fish took method feeder with pellets and small wafters. Any natural bait got instantly attacked by the Rudd.

Split cane rods where great back before I was born but I don't see the point when we have much better materials to use.
@DaleThomas15.27 ай бұрын
I’m not certain we do to be honest, it’s my first year using cane after using modern kit for decades. Unless I’m casting a long way with heavy leads on a big river the cane rods cope fine, a medium sized river like the Wye is perfect for them. But I don’t fish the Lower/Tidal Severn with them as they do have they’re limits. 👍

Just awsome man after my own heart I want more of this content great to see vintage tackle being used on the bank instead of being a relic left in the garage or shed top rod tight lines
@DaleThomas15.27 ай бұрын
I’ve ‘collected’ 4 split cans rods, all in use. But the temptation is strong to buy more than I need!!!! Just lacking a slightly longer float rod for deeper swims as mines just under 11ft. There’s no doubt the old more mechanical drags are better than modern ones.

Thanks for directing me to this. Yes that Millwyard rod has got some action when there's a big fish on the other end so I'll retract my previous comment on your other video. I bought all my cane/split cane/Spanish reed rods new back in the 1950s. They were expensive even then, my Spanish reed spliced split cane top match rod cost me over £5 more than my weekly wage! What a fantastic fish, congratulations.
@DaleThomas15.28 ай бұрын
My only Barbel from this river, I think the rod was at its max. Watching the video back was very scary, but didn’t realise at the time landing the fish was the only thing on my mind.
@tonycamplin86078 ай бұрын
@@DaleThomas15.2 Don't worry as you may have gathered I got mine in early 1950s and used them a lot. Unless there's something wrong with yours it won't break they were in made to stand up to such things. Hopefully not famous last words!!
@tonycamplin86078 ай бұрын
In my opinion you cannot beat a split cane rod. However your one doesn't look typical, all its action seemed to be confined to the top section. My avon style one, (I bought it in the 1950s), action is all the way through the rods length. Maybe yours was too heavy, perhaps it's a mkIV type carp rod.
@DaleThomas15.28 ай бұрын
It’s a bit of a mystery, the rods a 4 piece Milward’s, not in any catalogues but I somehow managed to stumble across two of them completely separately. Have a look at my Lugg Barbel video it shows it at full stretch. 🤢

@@DaleThomas15.2 Thanks for replying. A 4 piece cane rod isn't usual, although one of mine is. They're more often in 2 or 3 sections, or at least mine are. Good luck using them.

It’s a 4 piece Milward’s rod, I believe it may have started out as a fly rod but I bought it with Coarse guides already attached including a threaded tip guide. Refurbished it as I found it, very light compared to my other cane rods.

I still use my cane rods all of which I bought new in the 1950s, they were expensive even back then. The last a very good spanish reed one with a split cane spliced top cost £5•10•00 (£5 •5). When I was only earning £3•12 a week! You cannot beat a split cane rod for its all through action.
