Is this an arrangement? Or did Gossec actually compose this piece for wind band?
@CatoRenasci
@CatoRenasci Жыл бұрын
The notes to the arrangement for modern band our community band played some 20 years ago said it had been written for 18th century military band, which was a wind band…no real low brass and no valved brass…only fully chromatic scale brass instrument was the slide trombone. Low instruments were bassoon and serpent.

You can sure hear the influence of the Haydn brothers (Franz Joseph and Johann Michael,) the influence Gossec's compositions probably had on Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini and their contemporaries plus possibly even Berlioz to some extent....indeed an outstanding work! There are probably works by Gossec that have yet to be discovered and pitifully, some of them may be lost! Nevertheless, Gossec is one of most important Belgian-French composers of his period and my very first hearing in 1966 of his music was a recording made by the World-famous Goldman Band of his Classic Overture in C Major....indeed a beautiful work from a wind-band with very accurate intonation! All-in-all, I really love Francois Gossec's works!

We played this in my high school band back in the 1970s - a great piece. Not too many band directors know this piece. Thanks for posting.

Yeah you basically skipped the first half. You left out a bunch like the french horn solo, english horn solo, oboe and english horn duet, soprano and alto sax duet, tenor and bari duet. I think this might be an arranged score.
@bandgeek89
@bandgeek89 15 жыл бұрын
no there are a bunch of solos in this like oboe, bari sax, and sax quartets. I played this band and on some solos our teacher wouldn't even conduct and just let them play freely. But it was about this tempo.

Intriguing, I can hear Berlioz's "Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale" in bits of this. Presumably it's the genre and the arrangement.
