It's not a question Americans ask per se, unless they're referring to the movie. But I've seen Americans discuss online whether two European men kissing on the lips is gay or a European thing. I've seen them claim that in countries like Italy or France friends kiss on the lips all the time, so it's not gay, it's just European behaviour that seems exotic to them 😂

I love Alec and although technically born in Europe the character is played so fundamentally American that any notion of Alec being European comes across as utterly preposterous. Jace and Sebastian/Jonathan on the other hand exude 'Europeanness' with every move, every breath they take just because the actors can't deny being Europeans even if they try.

Look I get that this is an old post but let me Point some things out, Idris is in Europe he is a citizen of Idris so he's not American. Just like Wolverine is not fucking American okay he's Canadian.. people need to get over it they need to understand and and just let it go. And we're not even talking about the movie he's set and fucking England. Jonathan / Sebastian had an English accent because he was from The Institute in England. He is technically Jai's cousin i think. And the light woods look Spanish even though they're not from spain. They may have relatives that lived in Spain came from Spain but they're fucking Nephilim okay.. up into maybe a millennia ago they had to go by their humans genetics and then they were given Angel blood. So technically they do have racial backgrounds and makeups that is why there are black Shadowhunters and Asian looking Shadowhunters and all spectrums in between.. but where they wind up living has no bearing on the fact that they're supposed to be from Idris.

I would not say Alec is "so fundamentally American" because he doesn't have a New York accent nor is familiar with any American culture. Alec was raised in the Institute and I guess he was so focused on what is happening in the shadow world and in Idris that e is not used to European and American culture, only Idris culture. If you compare Alec to the actor who plays him (Matthew Daddario) who is also from New York, Alec lacks the accent, the hand gestures, and every New Yorker thing that Matthew carries. The only American thing about Alec is his American accent which he probably got from his fellow Shadowhunters.
