I have n X220 that I love so much. Cost was 30€ plus upgrade of RAM/SSD/Battery. Unfortunately it has a TN panel. Found a pristine LP125WH2(SLT2) IPS display, but managed to crack it when I bent the top/bottom hinges so it would fit inside the lid (me: idiot), and cried like a baby. Then, the same seller had an (beaten, no battery, no charger, no ssd cover) X230 to sell for same price of 30€, that specked i7-CPU and bought it just to retrieve the IPS inside (I assumed it has IPS since most i7 CPUs have IPS by default). When it arrived, surprise!! a different x230 than the one in images, still i7, IPS display version SLB3 (still good), pristine condition, and a dead battery (but glad it fills the hole). Now I moved the RAM, SSD, mSATA from my X220 to this one, and I'm giving the X220 to my father, cuz I'll regret if I sell it 😄I also wanted to move the x220 keyboard into x230 but I'll also feel sorry dismantling it. Probably I'll buy one separately and do the mod in the future, even though I like very much the backlit keyb of X230 and the typing experience on it. Great little machine.

I was really set on getting a used 5491 because of its beefier 6/12 CPU, but reddit folks say its heatsink is inadequate and doesn't let the 45W CPU shine. So probably 5490 would be better since it comes with the same heatsink, but CPU is less hot at 25W. Yes, 4/8 i7-8650U should not be compared to 8850H, but it should be sufficient for browsing, KZbin, mail checking and watching blu-ray movies.

bought myself a t480s after seeing its selection of ports and I couldn't be any happier as I am an IT technician. full sized rj45, thunderbolt docking options? the option for an external gpu? It is a surprisingly capable machine despite it being 2024. I got an i5 8350u model and one of the main reasons I bought the laptop is that it has really cheap replacement parts and with hundreds and thousands of these machines being made the parts are practically flooding the market to help keep the machine running like its brand new. PS: The keyboard being easily replaceable AND spill resistant? will save you hundreds of dollars in headaches later on, just get a silicone cover for it if you want it to last even longer

lithium polymer batteries were a mistake. 18650 cells are universal and still used, making battery rebuilds easy. Rather have a thicc laptop than a brick in 10 years. But my X230 and T440p batteries are still holding over 80%, so I think 18650 chemistry is just more stable and safer than LiPo.

14:00 mmm... Spicy pillow! Part of me is sad that this didn't come out (love that design, even today), part of me thinks it was the right call, look at the landscape in 2010: You had the iPad, you had Netbooks fading out, the Smartphone wars heated up thanks to Samsung with the first Galaxy S, then you had Windows CE dying, and Android was trying to prove itself outside of smartphones. I remember that around this time you had another Snapdragon-based, Android-running "smartbook" in the form of the Compaq Airlife, it had a 1GHz Snapdragon and 512MB of RAM like the Skylight and that bombed hard. Still, it's another "what if?" scenario. Now we have competent ARM chips, and Microsoft *seems* to be caring more about Windows on ARM. But manufacturers are doing anything but catering to actual consumer needs. The 8GB M1 Apple MacBook Air to me still remains the apex of essential ARM-powered computing.

So many ideas of the 2000s and 2010s that were ~15 years too early on the hardware side. We finally have hardware that can fulfill all of those optimistic visions without compromise, but the OEMs couldn't care less anymore.

While the concept is interesting, I'd imagine that the lackluster specs (even for the time) would make it hard to use this laptop even in 2010. Also just my guess, but it's possible that the CPU is an early version of the Snapdragon S3 SOC from the year after, 2011. So a dual-core Cortex A8, though the lackluster specs also makes the single-core S1 viable as a budget option for the Skylight's CPU.

Love how you used Endwalker as benchmark, since these type of old games are what suits the 1050 most. I mean really, any demanding games that's relatively modern (say, AAA from the last 5 years) will either choke the loving crap out of that poor 1050, or straight up won't run at all (thanks, Unreal Engine 5). For these type of games a 2060 will be better, but even then you'll still have to make do with lower settings, just my two cents.
