Owning a vacation home in SC is unsustainable. When we bought a year ago our realtor kept talking about 4%/6% as we were debating making SC our primary residence. It gives the impression that 6% would be an additional half of what residents pay. NO ONE TELLS YOU how the nonresidents are fully paying for school funding, among other additional taxes. Nonresident taxes are TRIPLE what residents pay. On homes and all personal property. It’s an unrealistic burden.

I recently interviewed the mayor and asked about flooding. Any new development now has to improve the storm water management and not be net neutral. This will greatly help and allow us to grow.

the only way to access this development is along the power line easement, and is going to put a major busy road right next to some existing homes, also a big apartment complex will be built directly in front of the landfill.

This was a very charming topic, Bill, and also filled in with all kinds of neighborhood details too. Nice focus on Costco… our local grocery stores structure how we live. Would be cool to see a video on how close you are to HTs, WFs, TJs. Each neighborhood has pros and cons.

Yessss it is very expensive for the past 3-4 yrs. Republicans mostly run all the things in sc. so seniors and youth especially African Americans are overwhelmingly lost and no help. Jobs will not pay what they should bc it’s a right to work state - no unions.. lots of scammers bc of the elderly.. tons of traffic and no transportation from/thru city to city. Very expensive in mostly white areas. Gentrification has kicked out African American ppl who can no longer pay taxes never.😮.. haha taxes- certain places u pay state, city and local taxes. It’s about 1800-2200 for two bed room. Maybe 3 or so African American own restaurants downtown Charleston but lots of African Americans working in the kitchen and hotel service

Native Charlestonian speaking: You said it in the intro, your first sentence- and this is why for schoolkids 2024 'Ohio' is a slur: you 'moved to Charleston without knowing anything about it' and then you complain about what Charleston IS.

My biggest concern is the hundreds of millions of dollars that the Charleston County School District will forgo om Tax Increment Finance district to help subsidize the wealthy individuals and corporations . Looking at the performance statistics on the school boards web site is evident that it is already providing a woefully inadequate education for a majority of Charleston County's students, die to the TIF's already in place. The school board will have no alternative except to raise taxes on the citizens of Charleston County in order to subsidize building projects in the city of Charleston.Thanks for the video.

Very interesting! You didn't mention time frames. How far out are we looking?
@TheBillOlson2 ай бұрын
I didn’t see a time frame yet. My best guess is we won’t see movement between 1-2 years. Then we’re probably looking at 15-20 years until full build out.

As a homeowner in Grand Oaks, I welcome this development as long as they stick to the plan of keeping plenty of green space and pay close attention to the traffic as well. Fortunately our home isn't next to the wooded area because the people across the street from us will now be about 20 feet away from a new road after paying extra to have the privacy of the wooded area behind them. Development is simply part of living in Charleston so we might as well embrace it and enjoy the growing equity in our homes!

This video breaks my heart. Grew up going to Folly in the 1960s. Most houses were really cottages in the true sense of the word. Gray and weathered, screened in porch, no AC or granite kitchens. Anyone could afford a place at Folly. Then the hurricanes happened and the big money moved in. My dream of living at Folly has long since vanished. A million dollar plus house is not in my budget. The Folly that I knew and loved is gone.
@johnr13503 ай бұрын
Grew up in one built in 1863. Pro’s: it was beautiful, large, great details like cherry cabinets and 12’ pocket doors. Cons: unending maintenance. Few modern conveniences like air conditioning are available. It was also in a depressed neighborhood that had not been improved yet when we bought it.
