I remember I was always the only one in elementary through high school, early to late 00s, that had skates in my backpack. I got teased all the time labeled a fruitbooter. I didn’t give a crap I just wanted to skate it was like being free. I want that back!

No denying it takes balls to do giant stairs, but it just takes so much less skill than skating or bmx

I think the hate from the other "action/extreme" sports comes from the perceived lack of difficulty when tricks are done on roller blades. Basically, the thought process is that it's strapped to your feet. How hard can it be? And Skateboarders pride themselves on that grind and just keeping at it while a people stop Skateboarding cause its hard.

I used to own a pair of rollerblades back in the late 90's as a child. lol I learned how to roller blade fast going forward and backwards, and I would just ride up to and jump off of random things. (like 2 stair sets and short patio drops, nothing special) Eventually I got into skateboarding in the mid 2000's and skateboarded from like 05 to early 2010's while growing up and going through elementary school to college. I remember one time in 2009 my younger brother bought some blades at a yard sale and had a short blading phase that was no longer than a month. (he skateboarded as well) He would blade while we skateboarded random spots and schools, and I remember he easily rolled up to the 11 stair at Sylmar high school and jumped off it with his blades. lol I guess a lot of skateboarding chops (balls) can transfer over (And vice versa) if you're already solid at the other sport. Ive always liked blading, biking, and scootering too. But I know how much of an asshole skaters could be back then when it came to other extreme sports. But I always saw it as: Who the heck wouldn't wanna learn how to bunny hop on a bike, who wouldn't wanna learn how to do a tail whip on a scooter, who wouldn't wanna do a 360 off a big drop on roller blades? So that's exactly what I did. That's why I could never hate the other sports, there curiosity was always there. Just learning how to bunny hop and wheelie was enough. Learning how to 360 and ride backwards fast on blades was enough. Tail whip on a scooter was enough. But skateboarding was my true forte.

Eito and Takeshi Yasutoko changed the sport. They were doing things on a vert ramp that was too insane to compete with. The bar was set so high that one slam trying to do what they did could hospitalize you for weeks-months. Their doubles runs are some of the best vert skills ever.

Most skaters i knew didn't fuck with vert at all we were purely street skaters and although what the twins were doing was incredible it never appealed to us in the slightest compared to street videos

As someone that has come back to skating after 20 years in the bodybuilding industry. I am VERY happy that it’s underground. BBing used to be but now it’s trendy to do contests in one of many divisions. Long live doing what you do because you want to do it. Not because you think it will make you part of some group. Anything you want to do in life to a high level has folks that are as committed as you are.

This is AMAZING and soooo important to the history of American athlete culture!!! I started skating 14 miles a day several times a week from Huntington Beach pier to Balboa Pier and back no problem ....in my 20s in the 90s. Now I am 56 and desperate to get back into it. I miss the feeling of flying untethered and now I can listen to all my 80s music. The mental health component that inline offers is equal to the cardio workout..and everyone my age who skated in their 20s so many now have high BP, diabetes and obesity. Inline burns 500 cal. per hour /jogging burns 700. Skating is 1000x more fun than running and easier on your knees. I am SOOO happy to start skating again and it's already making a huge comeback, (esp sine pandemic) and now with the engineering of off-road skates, speed skates, inline will see a resurgence of skaters like me, my era.....GEN X.. and inline will become the NEW "old" sport that finally gets the respect its deserved all along. The other part of Inline that hasn't been pointed out YET...but it will in time... is that the OG INLINE SKATERS of the 90s/early 2000s were the founders who laid the foundation and future of PARKOUR athletes we see today!!! Mahalo for sharing this terrific film!!!

Aggressive skating was the wrong direction. Flow skating is the future. See the stuttering skater. Roller skating 🛼 is probably bigger than skateboarding and rollerblading and it's not trying to be cool. They just want to dance or flow in their rollerrinks. If you try to insult roller skating those skaters won't care because it owns its dancing style. Had rollerblading not tried to be about being extreme it wouldn't have fallen so hard.
