Worked for CSX in the middle 1980's implementing a computerized coal tracking and billing system for the then existing C&O Newport News Coal Pier. That point in time was a period of increased coal exports, with that being the case Dominion Terminal Associates began construction of their facility. From your description I would expect the Kinder-Morgan has bought the former C&O/CSX pier and some property and built out their facility. Export coal is still big business.

It probably hits the empty hopper at a high velocity on purpose to not give enough time for the pin to fall in place and lock the knucle, it happens when a train tries to make a joint, but hits the batch too hard.

it's interesting to me that Amtrak equipment maintenance facility is in Beech Grove; that's pretty far from basically all of their hubs except Chicago (Sort of...?) I know that they have a big locomotive maintenance shop in Wilmington, DE along the NEC, I'm surprised they don't have a similar shop somewhere nearer to Chicago

Ship is moved back and forth with winches, and ropes/cables. SO they dont have to run the main engine(s) The water coming out of the vessel is both ballast water via ballast pumps and cooling water for the ships generators (have 3 onboard, usually run one in port, maybe 2 during cargo operations)

This was all shot with my drone. It's south of the airport and yard off Grade Lane. There's a little area on the west side of the road, just north of the intersection with Outer Loop. Because it's so close to the airport I had to get permission from the FAA to fly and I was only able to go 200 feet in the air. Hope this helps.

Originally this facility was suppose to the hub of CSX's hub and spoke intermodal operating scheme and at one point handled 30 trains a day. Hunter Harrison decided to reduce operations at the facility when he shifted the company to a PSR mindset. As far as I'm aware there were never plans to shutter the facility but it's operations had been drastically curtailed at one point

Thanks for great video and great channel. National Archive should have these materials, imagine having such material from 50 or 100 years ago. At the time, everyone is too busy working hard to make recordings, and activities are hidden away behind fences and green belts for commercial privacy, safety and security, and to mitigate impacts to local residents. Priceless work, droneguy.

one thing you probably noticed when filming the video, lots of blue UMAX 53’ containers, and no green EMP containers, why is that? Simple answer UP set up 2 joint ventures container pools about 10 years ago with the 2 east coast railroads, so that empties don’t have to travel back to their original railroad without a load. So the UMAX partnership is with CSX and EMP is with NS. Both partnerships each have about 40,000 containers. Therefore, you will see both EMP & UMAX on UP trains and ramps, but only UMAX on CSX and only EMP on NS.

The truck driver is unhooking the Container Twist Locks on the chassis @2:40 and yes they use Twist Locks on the stacks (they do not lock) but none in the well car. Also it becomes easier to back a 53" in after you do it every day, the 20' are the hardest to back in.

Another great video! Lake Erie and the Cleveland skyline look beautiful. Very interesting to see show the ships are loaded and unloaded. I have always thought how great it would be to work on a Great Lakes ship. I loved the shot at 17:45 with the train going over the bridge and then the mad scramble of boats after the bridge lifts. It brought to mind the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. But in this case its ships, boats, trains, automobiles, and even a plane a little earlier in the video. Lol, you caught all modes of transportation. I'm sure there must even be a bicycle somewhere in the background. The first two videos I uploaded on my youtube channel three years ago were of the American Courage, a couple years before that, going down the Cuyahoga. They are super quick videos but I saw the ship as I drove by and jumped out and took video of the hundreds, if not thousands of birds following the ship. Not sure if I'm allowed to post links to my own videos, but here they are if you are interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWSUZ4WMiJaWrJI and kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIivYYumlsmDp5o

Thank you. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. It was pretty fun to watch the sped up footage and the mad dash once the bridge was clear. It is very interesting the birds that follow the ships. I've not seen them swoop into the water (I may just be missing it) but I'm curious if it's the fish that could be looking for a meal in the stirred up water the birds are after or if the birds know there are bugs and plant matter also rising to the top. And thanks for sharing the videos. I'll check them out shortly.

Great video of the Northern Venture, the Cuyahoga River, and Cleveland! I've lived in Cleveland and surrounding suburbs all my life. Cleveland is a great city and your drone footage really made it look beautiful! I once navigated the Cuyahoga on a boat made of plastic milk jugs. Back in the 80's and 90's, Cleveland had an annual Riverfest. Part of the festivities was a Crazy Craft Race. My buddy and I built a catamaran with a couple hundred gallon milk jugs and foam insulation boards. We came in near last but we succeeded in our goal of not sinking and crossing the finish line, lol. At 6:10 you mention either a Coast Guard or fireboat escorting the ship. Behind the trees to the left of the bridge is a Cleveland Fire Station that houses a fireboat. The firehouse can be just barely seen at 7:00. This area of the river also looks wide enough that a ship could turn around if it wanted to. There is a turning basin further up the Cuyahgoa. Here is a neat video of Herbert C. Jackson turning around in the basin kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnSbqaygirh6opI. Lastly, not a big deal, but I couldn't help notice the Sunoco gas station at 29:44. That is one, of only two gas stations, that I believe are in the main downtown area of Cleveland. I used to fill up at that Sunoco when I worked downtown.

Thanks for such great info and wonderful stories (even the 2nd to last Sunoco downtown) and the video link. I figured a ship could probably trlurn around in one of those spots but wasn't sure. I had a lot of fun making it and hope to return for more videos and to check out everything Cleveland has to offer.
