Great coverage of West Coltontown. I worked at WC on the first work train that laid the first cars of ballast. The original design of the yard was lacking because to depart west a train has to depart east and go around a ballon track. I used to hate pulling into the receiving yard with 9000 feet and then had to runaround the train and shove it into an emptytrack. Over the years WC had other nickname s such as malfunction junction. Most of the dead freight now is switched at Montclair yard several miles west of WC. The radio channel is always non stop . Great video!!
@nkyrailfan3 күн бұрын
Oh wow! Thanks for all the great info. I was curious about the balloon track but figured it was probably just used to turn locomotives, but that makes sense they'd have to turn a whole train and not just the locos to keep everything in order.

With the fast-mo, the cars rolling past the hump look like HO models, usually the modern metal wheeled ones like Bachmann's, the way they'll roll unrealistically too fast down a grade when they get loose. 25:44 Those odd sections of track look just like snipped off pieces of Atlas flex ! Not until about 20 years ago did I even know that the 1:1 scale even had panel track ! I used to think all track was laid at the site; ties, then rails, then spikes/clips..like you'd see in westerns.. I suppose it WAS that way in the 1800s, but then sometime it became panels..I do though know the long main lines ARE ties down, then (what, 0.5 mi ?) ribbon rail dropped down on the tie plates (or, chairs, in Britain) then clips (no longer spikes) if concrete ties..

Pretty sure the security guard lied to you. I've shot video and stills all over LAUPT since 1976 and never been stopped or asked not to film. Once in 1982 I was given official permission to film a small Public Access segment in the station with filming lights, which blew out the station's circuit breakers, and they STILL let me film! Last time I did any shooting with a regular video camera there was 2012.

Who has to walk the train and reconnect all the hoses? The pin puller certainly has a lot of walking, but reconnecting would be much more walking without really knowing which cars need the hoses connected.
@nkyrailfan5 күн бұрын
I believe there's a car man who will walk the blocks of cars and connect everything. I'm not sure if it's while they're still in the bowl or if they connect the air hoses once they're in the departure yard.
@jamesg26093 күн бұрын
Yes the Carmen lace all of the hoses and inspect the car for any defects. The Carmen also do an air test on the train to ensure all of the brakes set and release. Its one of the hardest jobs on the railroad
@kevinprocsal75809 сағат бұрын
@@nkyrailfanThe bowl is too dangerous to work in. Generally they have a job called the trim that pulls the cars out of the opposite end of the hump and places them onto the departure tracks. The Carmen can then lock out the rail with blue flag protection then work the cars connecting air hoses, inspecting for defects and doing the required air tests.
@nkyrailfan40 минут бұрын
Thanks for the great information. I do appreciate it. That makes sense they wouldn't do anything in the bowl.

That first train is "repo" train. Empty containers that need to get reposition to the LA basin from Phoenix. One can know this because of it being distributed power (DP) and that empty well car on the headend. For Cajon, you can't have an empty well car ahead of 3,000 tons; so the train is very light. The DP motors are there cause the train came out of Phoenix via the Phoenix Subdivision. It joins the Transcon at Williams Junction, AZ. The switch there only opens towards the east. So, trains going west towards Los Angeles off the Phoenix Sub need to either run around their train, or be DP and "swap ends".

So the sorting tracks slope down?
@nkyrailfan5 күн бұрын
Correct. The crew pushes the cars to the crest of the hump where they're uncoupled. Gravity then pulls the cars down the hill. The retarders will clamp down on the wheels and slow the cars down as they roll by.

The unrestricted visibility typically indicates strong Santa Ana wind conditions, and I wonder how much of that smoke to the west is from wildfires vs the usual smog. Were you having any difficulty flying the drone?
@nkyrailfan5 күн бұрын
I was worried about the winds on my drive to the facility, but for the most part had no issues or warnings from the drone regarding high winds. It was a very fun time flying. I shot this Jan. 2, a few days before the wildfires erupted, so I'd say it's mostly just typical haze/smog you're seeing to the west.

There is so much potential for such a beautiful station. It's so empty. LA sky makes eny photo nostalgic. They need to bring back the flagship routes and upscale service. Amtrak is like a mass product being produced. A frist class coach, a nicely detailed lounge and sleeper would be superb to attract worldwide attention. Routes that you wouldn't mind a delay because the experience and time spent would be well worth the adventure.

I've swapped many times at Burnside. A couple years ago NS moved their crew change from Burnside to Danville so all trains bound for Chattanooga, Cincinattii and Louisville now swap at Danville. NS abandoned the crew hotel, MSI, in Somerset and has since picked up a contract with a different hotel in Danville. To my knowledge the only thing working out of the Burnsiide office is a yard job or two and some MOW/signal crews every now and then.
