Hi Gemma, I really appreciated your honesty, it’s not easy going out on your own and having the new anxiety of making enough money to live and still grow your business. But you are doing it and I think a part time supplementary income makes sense, I will be doing that too once I launch. Thanks for the video, i am loving your membership so far and have learnt a lot already. 😊

Thank you so much Alison, and I'm so happy to hear that you're loving the membership! I try to be honest about my experience as 1) I find it cathartic to talk about it and 2) I think it helps other artists to know what they might expect from this career choice.

Three years since this review and Leuchtturm now has the 120G with thicker paper to help solve the ghosting problem. Hopefully they will keep adding new cover colors. And yes, the difficulty with the name put me off at first, too! Loved your review, thank you.

Leuchtturm could be as plain as they like, as long as they do something about the ghosting. Come on, it's a major brand, they should look into this nuisance and fix it.
@CalligraphyGems
@CalligraphyGems 4 ай бұрын
Another commenter mentioned that they now have thicker paper so could be worth a revisit if that was your only issue. :) Saying that, there are so many journal brands now with a cover style for everyone that I think Leuchtturm might be a bit uncompetitive in that regard.

I bought the same 100 pack when they first arrived in my local Hobbycraft store. I agree with a lot of your review, however, I would like to add that in my experience with them I found that the more I used them the better they performed for me and it definitely DOES matter which paper you use them on. I had a few that were broken and unusable too. Kind regards.

Do you think that they became easier to use because you got used to them or because they'd "broken in" - not sure whether that's a thing with brush pens or not so I'm curious!

About making videos, I think it gets easier the more you make them. That was definitely the case for me. My first video took me like 8 hours since I was learning a lot of available options from the video editing software and from my camera as well. But now although i am still learning, it is not so daunting to make them (around 4-5 hours now). I am glad you havent given up on KZbin though👍.

Yeah I've sped up over the last couple of years. It's still consumes a lot of time though if I do a video with a lot of b-roll. My fave videos to do atm are this sort of video where I chat to the camera about my experiences. I'd like to incorporate more of this style of video in the future. The bonus is that they're also the easiest to edit! Also thanks for engaging in the comments, sometimes it feels like no-one's watching otherwise haha

It’s good to hear things are going well 😊 I understand how you feel about being judged or having people think your business is not legitimate. I feel mostly like it’s my extended family that feels that way…since I’m not making as much money as i would in my previous job, it doesn’t count, or, it’s just a hobby. I’m pretty sure they’ll view it that way until I start really making good money. It’s sad because it’s nice to have family/friends’ stamp of approval and support. Curious, given that you have achieved a level in calligraphy worthy of selling, do you still practice as much as before or it has significantly decreased in order to focus on the business side (or other chores)? If it decreased, are you worried? or not so much since it might take less time to keep your current level compared to when you started
@CalligraphyGems
@CalligraphyGems 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I don't practice that often solely for the purpose of improving as I'm currently content with my style. However, having a business focused on teaching has helped me to improve. I now think more critically about calligraphy to analyse how it works so that my teaching to others improves. I post to social media more often which I think helps me to hone in on my style more. I also use it daily when journaling. Because I create with it daily it's also solidly built into muscle memory now. :)

I remember gel pens being particularly popular when I was in Primary school and the children would swap scented gel pens with each other in school (swapping my chocolate scented pen for a popcorn scented pen still haunts me!). I also remember receiving Crayola gel pens as a child which were the sparkliest gel pens I'd ever seen, I was obsessed with them. Using these Zebra gel pens definitely brings me back to those days. Are there any stationery supplies that bring you a sense of nostalgia?

It looks lovely, my daughter has bought it for my xmas( early I know, but she wanted to make sure I didn’t buy one myself) I like to do light watercolour in my spreads, do you think this would hold up, my current one (strings and space) doesn’t like any. Which was so disappointing, the paper is 180gsm but lacks the coating that other journal pages seem to have. Sorry for the long message. 😮😬

Good question! I wanted a journal that could take watercolour for 2022 as I've been enjoying watercolour more and actually bought one for this purpose (a different journal). But because I know I need more room next year I gave up the watercolour aspect in exchange for space, assuming this wouldn't work for watercolour. I don't know why I didn't think to try it out for this video. I'll have to give it a go! Also, buying a new journal is genuinely my favourite xmas present to myself. I bought my journal in April this year though so super early haha.

@@CalligraphyGems from the researching I’ve been doing, I can’t see how this journal won’t take watercolour, especially after seeing your pen test, that ecoline looked nice and shiny 🤞 I got a beautiful b5 ottergami journal for my birthday, but whilst the pages are lovely the journal itself only has around 120 pages, and I didn’t want to run out of room, so have been using it as a reading journal, the paper is 170gms but has a nice almost shiny coating on the paper, and that has taken watercolour 😍 without a wrinkle. So I’m hoping the square journal will do the same. Why shouldn’t you have both, space to create and the paper to handle the water 😂😂😂😍

Ahh, that's genius! I think it's quite easy to fill up a journal in 6 months, particularly when you're new to journaling as it's so exciting trying out a bunch of ideas.
