I'm getting mixed info on the boiling tip: some folks across the net are saying 'a few minutes', while U of N Dakota recommends boiling utensils for a good 10 minutes. I clean my utensils with a drop of biodegradable camping soap and some water, then next time I start cooking, I dunk them in my boiling water for a minute or so. Thus far I've not had any food poisoning problems by doing this. Because my titanium utensils have a low heat capacity, I assume their areas exposed to boiling water will rapidly come up to the water's temperature and thus start killing bugs quicker than a home utensil would in the same scenario. www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/ag-hub/disinfecting-dishes-cookware-and-utensils

Which trail is this? I am not familiar with this park. Does this trail have a specific name?
@camphikelivecalifornia38643 ай бұрын
The first part, where I'm doing the steep climbs, is called the Grotto Trail. But eventually it intersects the Mission Point Trail, where it levels out, before the next climb to Mission Point (the top).

You left out how to charge it.
@camphikelivecalifornia38644 ай бұрын
The charging is similar to other electronic devices: It comes with the appropriate cord for charging. You just plug the mini-USB side into the headlamp after flipping up the rubber port protector, then plug the standard USB A side into a USB A wall block and plug it into the wall. Or just plug the USB A side into a power bank that has USB A type ports.

Cool, yeah I was surprised by the beauty of the opposing mountain at like 46:36 where I kind of take a path next to a drop off. Turned out to be pretty scenic. Then down at 57:22 near the more temperate foliage by the creek was another welcome surprise. I'll have to revisit this location in a month when the summer heat has given way to cooler fall temperatures. I'm sure it will look more beautiful in the winter too, once the rain makes all the greenery come alive.

It's a small gem in Southern California, that is otherwise surrounded on all sides by desert and Mediterranean climates at sea level. Hopefully I can come back before the weather turns, so I can film from the ski hut to the 10,000ft (3,000m) summit above the tree line. The ski hut at the end was at around 8,300ft (2,500m).

Hi! Thank you very much for this video, do you think this is a good park for a beginner hiker? If not, which park in LA do you think is the best for beginner hikers? Thank you!!
@camphikelivecalifornia38645 ай бұрын
Hello - well before I answer, I should say this particular hike in the video, in the hottest part of the summer, is functionally NOT doable. I've done this hike dozens of times, and the times I've attempted it when it's 95F+ degrees out, I've failed and have had to abort mission 1/3rd to 1/2 of the way up the mountain. Like I could feel myself getting near the point of heat exhaustion. You're 97% exposed to the sun on this trail. But with that said, out of all the hikes around the Valley I do, this is the one that requires the most cardio. It's because there are 4 or 5 sections of this trail that are very steep - like somewhere between 45 and 60% grade. I use it to train to do the Yosemite Valley hikes. You need hiking poles to tackle the steep parts and upper body strength to kinda help pull yourself up in those particular parts. If you're otherwise in good shape cardio-wise, like you can jog a mile or two without stopping, or can do the elliptical or cycle for 30 minutes without stopping, on the higher resistance settings, then you can do this hike. But if you're a beginner just trying to get in shape, I wouldn't attempt this hike as your first hike as it might discourage you. You might want to try something a bit easier, like park at the Deadhorse trailhead in Topanga State Park and walk the trail to Trippet Ranch. Or park at the end of W Avenida De Los Flores in Thousand Oaks and walk that trail to Paradise Falls in the Wildwood Regional Park. Or check out Eaton Canyon Falls in Altadena. Those are much easier trails for beginners. That last one requires trail running shoes that you don't mind getting wet, because you'll be walking through a creek 1/3rd of the time. Good luck!
@camphikelivecalifornia38645 ай бұрын
Also I should state that the elevation gain on this trail is severe. You have to climb 1500 feet over 1.6 miles. Compare that to Mt Baldy, where the first 1500 feet is over 3.3 miles. You can see the elevation profile on my website: camphikelivecalifornia.com/the-grueling-day-hiking-trail-from-omelveny-park-to-mission-point-granada-hills/

@camphikelivecalifornia38644 ай бұрын
Hello, I'm pretty sure I published this right after I hiked it so it would have been June. So Cal wildflowers actually get started earlier in the year, after the winter rains. So the best time to see them is like March through May. But of course you can always hike up at altitude and see nice flowers in the summer in the Angeles Natl. Forest. I was at Baldy the other day and saw freshly bloomed wildflowers at 8300 ft.

I found this video (and appreciate it so much!) because I purchased an Agnes and had no idea how to use the sack. I started as you did, leaning over and pushing the air into it, and it was taking forever (as you said, 20-30 times to fill the pad) after a while I got tired and sat on my butt. When I did, it took pressure off the valve and the air flowed more easily, and the pad inflated more rapidly. I was more squeezing the air into the pad, rather than pushing/leaning down into it. After finishing inflating I actually let the air out and started over to see how many sackfuls it took and it was only 7-8 using the sit-on-your-butt method. Hope this helps someone else!

Mine out of the box only vacuums instead of fill air. How do you switch it?
@camphikelivecalifornia38645 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply. The small nozzle sticking out of the cylindrical body of the unit is where you should feel air pushing out (In the video its the part with the grey rubber accessory piece attached to it). The top area of the cylinder is where the air gets sucked in, like a vacuum. This vacuum effect allows you to deflate your sleeping pad as you're packing up to leave camp. Hope that helps!

How do you recharge these? No light on mine.
@camphikelivecalifornia38644 ай бұрын
It has a USB cord that plugs in the side. There's a rubber flap you have to pull up to get to the mini USB port to plug the cord into. Then just plug the other side into a standard USB-A type port that can go into a wall outlet cube. Once plugged in, there should be 3 blue LEDs on the headlamp that are blinking. I think they turn solid when fully charged.

Yeah I can confirm they are supposed to be bent a little. They're strong though. I've put this tent up at Gaviota State Park where the wind is crazy 24/7. All night the wind would try to collapse the walls of the tent down onto you, but the tent always bounced back into shape. I wasn't using guylines either.

@camphikelivecalifornia38647 ай бұрын
@@crod760 The tent has a main compartment and the yellow fly also makes two additional vestibule areas. One of these areas is large and can hold a lot of equipment. I've even had to cook in that area before, due to the wind.
