Who here reconizes the leopard paw fighting stance common in all leopard (paa) styles in fujian in the ending kamae stances. Isnt the leopard fist cross legged palm over fist salute is in the kata. Is this a leopard origin kata? I also see a lot of stomping and double fist punches common to fujian lion styles or Sai(lion).... Interestingly Pas/Paa in fujian means leopard and Sai means lion and in okinawa the kata was known as Passai which would means Leopard Lion form in chinese or Baoshi in modern Mandarin and Baasai in cantonese and passai/baasai in fujian chinese which is province closest to okinawa.... Or im just over thinking it...

In the JKA, this is Nidan. It was switched when they standardized katas for Shotokan. I think the speed is appropriate but it does look snappy. It will be slower in the Shotokan version because of the longer stances and the philosophy of 'big movement'.

Literally have to slow it down to 0.25 to even see what you are doing, let alone follow. But when you have your back to camera, unfortunately it's impossible to see what you're doing.

Slow it down to 25 percent speed, and watch all the extra moves he makes trying to make a snappy movement. This guy traded useful form for his extra snappy waving his arms around like a madman style. 🤪🤪🤪

I haven't done this kata in years. Very fun to watch it being done and vaguely recognise what's going on. And the way this guy does it is so neat. The way he literally whips his arms into position is just awesome

I trained in Shorin Ryu Matsubayashi Ryu. In tenth grade some boys were making fun of me, so I told them to set up one of our heavy Science books and with my fist only an inch from it, I could make it fly across the room. They laughed and set the book up. With my fist one inch away, my wrist turned out, I executed the "circular punch" and sent the book 20 feet away. Not a kid in school ever bother me again after that.

Thank you Sensei Jim Sindt from Jay, Ontario Canada. It's been 30 years since I was Senpai for Sensei. Sensei chose me on my first day, a white belt 15 year to be Senpai and help assist teaching classes from the go in Matsubayashi Ryu Shorin Ryu, he couldn't help it. I was the only one jumping around doing tkd kicks and I dove into his bag and started working his chucks properly so he takes them from me and sets me about Bo and Sai forms and 10 minutes later he asked me the honor of being his Senpai. I'll definitely be watching your video's to remember all the Kata and learn the last few I didn't before I had to move away and stopped teaching. My Sensei has a full time business so teaching isn't a big thing for him anymore right now. Getting my black has always been my dream and now that I'm almost 50, I better get off my butt and get er done right.. I remember them well, just forget how many punches on each turn sometimes. People that are judging you shouldn't. Here I am, a former Senpai choosing your video's to check myself too. That should tell them something.

Just click on the video settings (cog-shaped icon at the bottom of the video) to call up settings and where you see 'playback speed' click on that to change from 'Normal' to '0.25' and it'll be slower speed.

Interesting. In Shito-ryu we call it Tomari no Passai. Which makes sense since the founder of Matsubayashi-ryu, Shoshin Nagamine, studied Tomari-te under Chotoku Kyan.

If you run it at one quarter speed, you can really see how weak his karate is. High speed arm snapping, with uniquely poor form. Instead of feeling the ground before him as he steps to the side, an exaggerated stomp. Instead of quick accurate strikes, every arm movement goes though this wild snappy 'raising his shoulders twist' first, except for his backfists, which are just pathetic flicks of the wrist.

Doesn’t do the upper block correctly and doesn’t snap his head.
@JaybayJay
@JaybayJay Жыл бұрын
Yes he does, that's how we learn the high block. As a former Senpai of Matsubayashi Ryu since white belt at 15 I can tell you that he is. We learn to fight very naturally, the natural stance a large part of the Matsubayashi Ryu Kata's. What matters most is footwork and power, then precision and speed. You can make so many mistakes on your grading but failure to use your power is an automatic fail. He's doing everything correctly and we don't learn that snapping your head is essential. We're trained to go at a certain pace, steady and powerful. We could go faster, but that's not the spirit of Matsubayashi Ryu.

@@El_Mortificador You don't "Snap your head", especially not as a precursor to a turn, no.... that's the most stupid thing ever invented by sports karate. In Okinawan karate, the gaze follows the hands or the feet in a natural way.
