the last rhyme between 'Albannach' 'seanchaidhean' and 'garbhlaichean' is not with 'bhaile' but with 'ceann-bhaile' pronunced like ceannbhaile or 'ceann(a)bhaile' in the same way Albannach is pronounced Al(a)bannach etc. These long syllables/epenthetic insert vowels into a consonant cluster are their own thing and don't rhyme with similar non-epenthetic sounds. E.g. sgealb rhymes with balbh but not baile, and baile rhymes with talla but not marbh. And in any case the number of syllables (three) would not line up here with 'baile' as there is only one non-stressed vowel (bailE, as Beurla is a stressed world) vs two following each of the rhyming syllables in Albannach, seanchaidhean and garbhlaichean. similarly, the secondary rhyme with ìslich and thill is not with chIAtach (this is a different vowel, not a long Ì) but rather with MÌ-chiatach (pronounced like mìcheatach)

How do you say Christ has risen

Is the pronunciation of broad r as an approximant something of the younger generation? Blas na Gàidhlig emphatically says it shouldn't be pronounced like that, but like a velarized tap/flap.

Judging by your pronunciation and some others, many seem to default to schwa vowels. But I don’t know how ubiquitous this is in current Scottish Gaelic, because it isn’t as ubiquitous in current English, compared to Elizabethan/Shakespearean English. I guess I gotta figure this out the old-fashioned way -exposure, albeit more difficult due to the rarity of Gaidhlig and Gaeilge as reference. There’s also the vowel extension no longer found in modern English but commonly found in Japanese, and I don’t know how this plays in current Gaidhlig or other Celtic languages. Once again, the phonology is still all over the place, regardless of the writing. I already know Englishes due to sheer exposure, and have noticed consistent nuances in Japanese, but Gaelic remains an enigma in its phonology thus far.

I've been working with Old Irish (Sengoidelc) for about sixteen years now, and with Scottish Gaelic on-and-off since the mid-1980s, and would like to get a Masters in Celtic Studies (or a similar title). Do you know of any universities in the UK/Repub. of Ireland that offer such a graduate program?

Very interesting video. In my honest view, the remaining Celtic language of Scotland should just simply be called “Scottish”. “Scottish-Gaelic” / “Scots-Gaelic” just makes little sense + is such an unnecessary mouthful. As a “Scot” + a “Gael” originally meant the exact same thing. Also the language isnt necessarily just a form of Gaelic. There are many traces of Scotlands other 2 Celtic languages within it, i.e., Pictish + Cumbric. Also, the language was also at one time known simply as “Scottish”. Therefore Scotlands 2 main national languages should simply be called:- - Scottish (Celtic language) - Scots (Anglic language) Furthermore, the strong Cumbric + Pictish traces, substratums, syntaxs + words within the language should be made more known + those parts of the language, be part of the main standard of use. In the language itself too, I feel it would make so much more sense to call it something like “Albannaig”, to highlight that the language is not just Gaelic. I would do similar with the Irish language + officially name it as “Éireilge” + Manx officially as “Mannig”. Still referring to these 3 languages in each of their native tongue as “Gàidhlig”, “Gaeilge” + “Gaelg” just doesnt work, is too confusing + outdated.

Wonderful video! The biggest difference you may find is that many Irish L2 speakers (all over the internet) don't tend to speak with an authentic Gaelic accent, but instead with an awful English one which, if that weren't bad enough, Irish-Americans then come along tragically assuming it to be the authentic one for the language. You'll also notice some of the Irish spelling was bastardised in the mid 20th century spelling reform, making it appear divergent from the Scottish which better retains the original orthography. An Irish native speaker will converse with a Scottish speaker with few problems. If he/she also knows the pre-spelling reform, he/she will read Scottish very well.

Christ is Risen! One of our Parishioners (Aiden) found your Channel and passed around the link. I’m delighted! When you chant, tears run down my face. I’m listening to the language of 3 sets of great grandparents from the Hebrides and Highlands. (I’ve been to Mull Monastery which is now on Iona also.) Our Parish of 350+ mostly converts in Loveland Colorado, celebrate St. Andrew’s Feast Day, and some wear their Tartans to Liturgy.
