Thank you!! This is a hard one for me, but the best info that you said was that it is "for me". I've been a lifelong people-pleaser, but now is ME time!! Could you also do a video on how to respond and reinforce, if the person or people you established the boundary with keep trying to gnaw away at your boundary? (Not children).
@EmpathicSightКүн бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. I am glad it helped. It is so difficult to set and maintain boundaries, especially when our default is to please others. I can certainly do a video on this, thank you for the suggestion. I can imagine you are not the only one who struggles with these things.

Unfortunately, we'll always be faced with unsolicited advice. Most of the time people are genuinely trying to help, but their advice is often based in assumption and their own life experiences. I find that patience is the best friend when dealing with these things. Let me know if it helps in the future.

I was about to say how would you give advice but you already covered it. So I'll ask a harder specific question. How would you go about trying to give advice when someone is being harmful to themself or others but they are either defensive or stubborn. My guess would to be is use facts (proper ones) and ask how the person their harming feels to evoke empathy? I'm asking because I get lost in thinking whether giving advice is harmful or needed or will make things worst.
@EmpathicSight28 күн бұрын
That is a very thought-provoking question, thank you. When giving advice, I often pause to ask myself if they are open to it. With my clients I can often use the phrase "Can I offer some advice" or "Can I say something you might not want to hear" In the situation you are talking about, I like your solution. Evoking empathy from the person can really help to show them that what they are doing is harmful to themselves and to others. Another thing I would say in that situation is "I'm concerned about you, and want to help. Can I offer you some information/resources". This might be well-received, or it may not. Something to remember though, sometimes we can't do anything if the person is not open to the support we are ready to offer. I hope this helped, thank you for your question.

While my point about this was geared more towards blindness and the fact people will speak louder and slower to me, this is often true for someone who does not speak a certain language. Its as if speaking louder makes it more clear haha.
@TDS.HarperАй бұрын
People still act strangely around people who have visible disabilities. You've probably gotten weird questions such as, "Oh my gawd. You're blind! Can y'all use the bathroom by yourself?" Or, "Can you hear in color?" All asked in a LOUD voice.
@EmpathicSightАй бұрын
@@TDS.Harper Sometimes yes. But I try to remember that most of the time its coming from genuine curiosity, and often misinformation about people with disabilities. At any point if they are being malicious, I just pretend I can't hear them.

@@EmpathicSight Best thing you can do, I believe. I try to acknowledge the person, but no the negative behaviour.
This is a very helpful reminder that I need to give myself a break, even if I feel I have to do my homework all night. Thanks for this.
@EmpathicSightАй бұрын
Its always a good idea to take breaks, even wven when we feel like a project needs to get done. Breaks help our mind to refresh and come back to a problem with a new way of thinking.

Back in 1999, I was sitting in the ferry line up with two screaming kids creating havoc in the back seat. I was getting quite stressed out. Out of the blue, there was a knock on my windows. It was my down the street neighbour's. She had brought me a coffee because she knew I was having a rough day. 25 years later I still think of her and remember her random act of kindness.
