Meh. "Ye are no Parliament!" by Cromwell was better... ;-)
@moniyanprince620194 күн бұрын
He was the son of the King that Parliament had ordered to be executed, and was seen as a potential threat by the Cromwells, and yet he gained enormous respect than his father ever did. He even forgave those who had arranged his father's execution and ruled the British Isles in the same way that his grandfather, James I and VI ruled

No king has the right to dissolve Parliament. Parliament is Supreme. That was the question that drove the Civil War; that was the reason why Charles Ist was executed. Charles II in seeking to ensure the succession with a known and clear Roman Catholic was doing exactly what he accused Parliament of doing. And there was another short civil war and the heir he speaks of had to flee for his life. A Sovereign Parliament is the key to actual Democracy. Today…as then…beware those who seek to diminish the ultimate authority of Parliament…..something that being in the EU did for a while…

Only a true king, may fired you with such an elegance, and solemnity. Rufus Sewell, is such a great actor, that even convince me that he is the real king of england, scotland and ireland. And Martin Freeman, does his part so good. The best line of this scene , is this: " Gentleman, go home I will not trouble you any further...", ins short terms: " Go, and f... your selves" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Ah the Tyrant King Charles II. He dissolved Parliament 4 times in a year in an effort to save his own power, and here we see the scum of the Earth in the comments who want his villainy to be reborn. Never, I say.

Tyrant? he dissolved Parliament because he wanted a more moderate and inclusive parliament instead of one enforcing religious bigotry the people had just suffered a nation ran by politicians... absolute monarchy is better than any republic

This was an insane game of chicken. Charles II used all the dead bodies from the Civil wars as ammo against parliament to get his way. Dissolving parliament was a prime cause of the wars in the first place. Monarchy is despotic and Charles proved it, again, just like his father.

Oddly enough, Charles II reigned without a Parliament (or a civil war) for the rest of his rule (1681-1685). 😎

St. Edward's crown, the sceptre and orb are all coronation ornaments and symbols, worn *only* at the Coronation. Charles II would _not_ have worn them to open or dissolve Parliament. The inability of TV people to get basic facts right annoys me more than it should!

no, the the Civil War was under Charles 1st, this is his son Charles 2nd after the restoration of the monarchy, though his father did regularly dissolve Parliament, usually when he couldn't get what he wanted, which was one of the things behind the Civil War. The king only now dissolves Parliament as a formality for the government

Its funny comparing the fashion of the MP's in this scene and the same one in the movie Cromwell when his father Charles 1 dissolved parliament only a generation before from Puriton to wigs .....

Question from a non-Britain (sorry for ignorance, couldn't find any info online). When the MPs gather, one of them is holding a long black cane. A similar one was also seen in "Cromwell" (guy sitting in same position where Prime Minister would sit). Was that used by Prime Ministers as a symbol of their office back then? Thanks.
@SaltimusMaximusАй бұрын
there is an official role in Parliament named Black Rod, if you Google that, it might be what you are looking for, at the state opening of Parliament he bangs his black rod three times on the doors to demand access, it is partly ceremonial and administrative function
