You should clean the block and the head before refitting the head and use a metal ruler to check if the both are flat use a feeler guage to see if it will pass under the ruler any ware. If you uses any abrasive remember to stop any detritus falling down the cylinders or any ware else.

Is it possible that when you replaced the head gasket you mounted the distributor in the wrong position?

There is a solenoid with a piston. Just needs cleaning and a drop of oil. :-)
