I was a young Cherokee boy living in Chicago, the first city I'd ever lived in when Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus began playing for the Bears. Watching Gale Sayers run was magical. Being a Native though my first football running back hero was Jim Thorpe though. I read every book about him I could put my hands on, and when I was finally able to SEE Jim Thorpe really run the ball, I was amazed. What an amazing runner that man was! All of my friends wanted to play quarterback, not me, I wanted to be a fullback and run people over, just like Jim Thorpe. Fullbacks, like the Jims, Thorpe and Brown were my heroes. Loved seeing those guys play.

When trying to rank the all-time greatest halfbacks, listen to what was said from, 28:38, to, 28:42: "If ever, there was a halfback made in Heaven, it was, Walter Payton."-END OF STORY,- PEEEEEEEEERIOD

Matt Suhey gave Walter the ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT for a running back. He said, from, 28:44, to, 28:50, that, "probably, the best running back combination, EVER, in the league, would be, Walter Payton, and ANY OTHER BACK."-YOU CANNOT BEAT THAT COMPLIMENT.

Not saying the best, but the most entertaining running back was Barry Sanders. Man he was fun to watch. Never watched Gayle Sayers.

The guy from, 17:41, to, 19:11, has ALL of them FADED. What is said from, 17:49, to, 17:53, is enough: "Gale scored a record twenty-two(22) touchdowns in his rookie season with Chicago." GALE SAYERS HAD HIS ROOKIE SEASON IN NINETEEN SIXTY-FIVE.(1965) THAT WAS FIFTY-NINE(59) YEARS AGO. HE DID IT IN A FOURTEEN(14) GAME SEASON. THAT IS STILL THE MOST TOUCHDOWNS THAT AAAANY ROOKIE HAS EVER SCORED. Listen to what is mentioned from, 19:07, to, 19:11: "Gale was the youngest man ever inducted into the HALL OF FAME." Believe it or not, Gale Sayers was ONLY THIRTY-FOUR(34) YEARS OF AGE WHEN HE BECAME A MEMBER OF THE NFL HALL OF FAME. One note worthy of mentioning: I LOVE how the defender in the white uniform, at, 19:02, was practicing his DIVING skills, ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. NO ONE HAS EEEEVER RUN WITH THE FOOTBALL WITH MORE EXCITEMENT THAN GALE SAYERS, AT AAAANY LEVEL. HIS MOVES ARE UNAPPROACHABLE, UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED, IMITATED, REPLICATED, COPIED, OR, THE LIKES. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE GALE SAYERS. YOU WERE ONE OF A KIND.

I was blessed to have watched these great MEN. They each paid a high price for their efforts, but, to a man, never voiced any regret for doing that which all men must do to succeed: Try first to work around an obstacle, but when all else fails, lower your shoulder and run through it.

Barry was the best-played on bad teams so every one knew he was going to get the ball and still couldn't get him in a time where everyone was a real trained athlete-Brown was just bigger than the linemen and often played against part-time ballers-against top teams greatly diminished results(see championship game vs packers); Emmit was the toughest, but his teams were much better and the defences had to plan for Irvin and Novacek
@normanburns-ko4ro11 ай бұрын
No way Emmit Smith was in the league with Walter Peyton or Barry Sanders or Earl Campbell. I wish they would show the runs he made where he would run out of bounds or squat down to keep from getting hit. Many more of them than there was long runs.

A combination of Brown and Sayers may be OJ Simpson. But in the modern era, I give the crown to a complete football player, Marcus Allen.

No one has ever even approached doing what Jim Brown did in as few of games. Jim did his work in 12 and 14 game seasons. Barry, emmitt, etc all played in 16 game seasons. Only 1 man has averaged over 100 yds per game for a career (104 yards) and that is Jim Brown, the greatest running back in NFL history.

Chuck Foreman changed the running back position in the 1970s and changed what a running back could do as a double threat with the advent of a back as a reciever. Running backs caught the ball out of the backfield before him but he took the running back as a reciever to a whole new direction that changed the NFL forever.
