another nice one... you could wrap the shaft with some Krystal flash to give a hint of a lateral line and red maker for gills and add 30 seconds to a five-minute tie

I am looking for the ultimate Northern Pike, Largemouth fly, do you think this fly would durable enough stand up to the teeth and heavy usage? It was a very nice video with good camera angles, lighting and no BS music. I liked and subscribed to your channel. Again, very well done!
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 6 ай бұрын
I can’t really speak to the durability on this fly. It’s made primarily for bass, and certainly not a pike specific fly. I’ve had a single one of these last me an entire season, and it endured a couple pike encounters. But if I had to choose an “ultimate” pike fly this would not be it. You could possibly substitute the laser dub with something more durable though, like EP fibers or SF Flash Blend.

Wanted to post up here and say thanks. Went on a float a couple weeks ago and tried all kinds of stuff....nothing was working. I had tied a couple of these and tied one on after all the normal stuff wasnt panning out. Finally caught a few! Gave the other to my buddy and we made a good day out of a bust with this one fly! Nothing ground breaking, but we went from zero to salvaged due to this pattern.

This pattern looks like it imitates a injured bait fish laying on its side. Does it sink flat with a falling leaf action?
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it hovers really slowly with a “parachute” effect. And with the downward sloped head, when you strip it, the fly digs downward. Crazy action. Smallies have a hard time ignoring this. Very fun to witness this fly get cleaned up.

Do you ever weight these flies?
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes, but I much prefer to fish unweighted flies. Mainly because I like to see the fish come up off the bottom and eat near the surface. Its very cool to witness. I would rather catch one fish like that versus 3 off the bottom where I cannot see the eat. Personal preference.

How does it swim?
@erichgross7644

Dives down sharply with each strip. It’s supposed to mimic a wounded baitfish that’s off balance, swimming on its side, attempting to get back to the bottom to any sort of cover.

Does it need any keeling weight to ride hook up?
@erichgross7644

This one actually rides hook point down. I just used that picture to illustrate that it’s tied “sideways” if that makes sense.
@juancanon1459
@juancanon1459 Жыл бұрын
@@erichgross7644 do you think it would ride hook up with a small amount of lead wire right where the bend starts at the front of the hook?
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 Жыл бұрын
@@juancanon1459 It definitely would, with enough weight. In fact, look at a fly from Schultz Outfitters called the “fluttercraft”, it’s designed exactly like that. Lots of weight on the top side of the shank so it slides along the bottom, hook point up. I personally prefer to fish unweighted flies as much as possible, but with some tweaking, you could certainly turn this into a “dredge” style minnow.

Thank you! Hook is kinda small for a keel, but you certainly could. Just use a thin diameter lead wire. But I personally don’t have a problem with these changers briefly swimming sideways. Looks more distressed and erratic. I keel most of my bigger changers tho.

Nice fly but it’s hard to tell how you are positioning the materials, especially on the tail section. I can assume the positioning but would rather know. Thanks.
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 Жыл бұрын
Jeff, I can see what you mean. All the tail materials are tied on the top side of the hook, running straight off the back. SF Flash Blend (stiff white stuff) and Ice Wing (gold flash). The two colors of Craft Fur are tied on the sides of the hook. So this makes a flat swimming minnow with a downward sloped head, mimicking a wounded baitfish. Thanks for watching and the comment, this fly rocks em.

Does using braid for connecting hook to shank hold up okay?
@erichgross7644
@erichgross7644 Жыл бұрын
I’ve never had any issues. In fact I’ve had better success with braid vs wire. I’ve had a few flies with wire break because the wire gets brittle and cracks over time. I prefer braid personally but both are fine. Another good option is heavy monofilament, like 20 or 30 lb.
