I own all the books except Barnaby, Chuzzlewit, and Dombey. I have BBC films of most all Dickens including those three. But now I should seek out Barnaby It was adapted by the BBC in thirteen episodes between 30 September and 23 December 1960

Excellent! It would be very interesting to see that 1960 version of Barnaby Rudge. Do you know if it's available anywhere?

@@booksfrommybookshelf Yes I own it. It is part of a dvd set The Charles Dickens Collection, Vol. 2 (David Copperfield / The Pickwick Papers / The Old Curiosity Shop / Dombey and Son... (Slim Case) Amazon an EBAY both have it. It is in B&W if I remember. The others were those 1970s-1980s BBC films.

That recognition thing. I had it when I read Barbara Pym’s Quartet in Autumn. It was England and London of the mid-70s all over again, although I was then much younger than the protagonists of the book! @booksfrommybookshelf4 күн бұрын
Hornby is a very English writer, with very English self-deprecating humour, so I can understand that he's not so well known in the States. I would think the film is quite well known, though. Tilly is spelled with a 'Y'. 🙂

I confess to having 7 Brookner books on my library shelves. Alas, the stories, over the years, have been interwoven in my memory with Barbara Pym, and oddly, Julian Barnes, which means a bit of a muddle. I do remember, however, being very taken up with Brookner's characters and their self-searching. And then, I got tired of them. I am so pleased that you have reminded me of her books, which I might quite enjoy rereading.

Hallo Rosamund, lately I read "Divine Misfortune" by A. Lee Martinez. The story takes place in the near future. Its normal to people to hire Gods to have a better life, for example to get rich, to have more luck, or to climb the career ladder more quickly. Its a very funny read because to life with Gods is not simple and full of complications. Best wishes from Berlin Susanne

Based on this recommendation, I read all three books in the trilogy. As a Scot, I knew about James VI &I, and also Bonnie Prince Charlie so the period covered by this trilogy filled in a lot of gaps for me. Also, having the North American and West Indies included provided useful contexts. Overall I enjoyed how the fiction was woven within actual history. The characters were an eclectic mix; I appreciated that most of them were neither unrealistically heroic or villainous. Definitely worth a read but I recommend reading all three within the same time period so you don’t forget who is whom.

I've not heard of either the book or the author sounds interesting reading. Agree about seeing a film then reading the book it was based on and visualising the actor as the main character. Funnily enough I prefer this than to read the book and get a picture of the main character and then to have them played by someone who looks nothing like I imagined!
