I’m only 22 so I may be able to give some perspective on what people my age are interested in seeing. Color. If it’s BR trains, make them a variety of express blue, lined black, or green. If it’s a grouping or pre-grouping locomotive then put it in its original livery. Tornado in LNER green or BR blue is too gorgeous. Character. We have enough BR/LMS. Please! I want to see a Raven A2 or ANYTHING 1890-1920 really. These engines are unique and elegant, while powerful enough to be effective on a preservation line. That’s my 2 cents

There's lots of S100 clones in bosnia laid up and chinese JF locos laid up that can be bought and made to resemble many extenct or rare classes of locos.

The Standard 3MT tank looks the most sustainable to me - big enough for most heritage lines, but small enough to not require vast amounts of expensive coal. If the Severn Valley one is a success, I could imagine more being built for other lines.

I always want more new build engines, because I love steam engines, and always want more. From a practical standpoint, that ain’t gonna be easy. The fact that the patriot still isn’t finished yet is highly concerning. I wouldn’t object to the number of groups consolidating their efforts. It would reduce the number of engines being built, but would increase their chances of actually completing them. Say, put some of the more niche, early stage projects on the back burner and consolidate funds into completing the ones further along. Get the p2, standard 3 and county done, as they are closer to completion than others, then refocus on the projects further away from completion. I have no idea how viable that is, I don’t work in the industry. But it’s so exciting seeing a new engine complete. Makes me wish I lived in a country with as much heritage support as the UK does. I know some new build projects were started here in Australia, but goodness knows what happened to them. I think one of them got canned because one of the leaders ran off with most of the money

Absolutely fab video Chris, you most certainly pose an interesting question, as you have pointed out that the heritage railways is certainly experiencing higher than the average costs especially when paying for the all important fuel - COAL. This is, I believe, the crux of the matter as there are now no working coal mines in the UK, which means buying coal from elsewhere and the cost is astronomical, therefore in my opinion, new builds will shortly be a thing of the past and even restoration projects may eventually grind to a halt for this very reason.

Converting steam locomotives from coal firing to oil firing is a thing and with oil firing whatever flammable liquid that can burn can be used from used motor oil to biodiesel so not as bad a problem everyone is thinking here.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again, the fact that Britain even has newbuild projects to this extent is a marvel in its own right. We only have 2 newbuilds here in Denmark, one of which is a 1ft miniature gauge engine for a Safari park, and the other a replica of an 1846 Sharp Steward engine called Odin, the first locomotive in Denmark. Though here there also isnt as strong of a case. Also because heritage societies here are much tighter on cash and will have even more trouble running in the coming years. We'll just be happy to have an operational steam engine at all in most of the country. Especially since currently theres only a handful across the country in running order right now. Especially on standard gauge. There are many societies here that dont have their own heritage line and as such have to run on either the national mainline network or regionally governed branch lines. And the national mainlines are all being equipped with ERTMS level 2 signalling up until 2033. And politically speaking, the regional governments that own the branch lines are on rocky ground due to many politicians, especially in our current government, wanting to dismember the regional governments entirely. And any ERTMS equipment costs several hundred thousands of pounds per engine which is money that these societies dont have. Also doesnt help that the vast majority of preserved locomotives here are old tank engines from independent lines with comparatively low top speeds around 60-70km/h. Though a few beefier designs are preserved with some societies, like K class 4-4-0's which are designed to run 100km/h or 60mph, even if the lack of Automatic train protection limits them to 50mph. The only big and fast locomotives here are owned by the national railway museum with few exceptions. And said national museum did scrap one of their big engines, R-class 946 back in 2017 whilst their volunteers were actively working on restoring it.

If there is a tailing-off of new, new-build projects one reason could be that deep-pocketed potential supporters of such schemes represent a declining share of an even more rapidly declining audience. If so, it’s less about money than it is about the number of people out there with money who actually care.

Just a small correction - water jet cutting is NOT superior to forging for component like rods, it produces an inferior product metallurgically. As you say, water jet cutting preserves the grain microstructure of the steel as rolled into a flat plate, but forging causes the grain microstructure to flow around the shape which gives superior strength and resistance to fatigue. BH is never going to be run at 80 mph like the original, so the compromised strength and fatigue resistance isn't a problem, but if it was a product that was intended for main line high speed service then forging would still be the method of choice. Great video though! Thanks for posting. Marion

Have been out of the loop with such topics and videos but I do have to wonder about the cost(s) of a new build compared to a restoration of existing loco stock? I'd have thought a new build to be more expensive than Triggers Brooming an existing loco but I suppose you do get a completely new vehicle rather than a repaired one with old parts? A complicated topic for sure.

I think there is a case for all, just need the right funding, maybe lobby the government to open up more accessible funds for projects like thease, where there is a huge benefit for all, historical and foreign the local community in general 🙏💪👍

For sheer usefulness a 2-6-4 tank or 2-6-0 equivalent is a good fit for heritage lines. In practice the cheap and cheerful bud would be a standard gauge version of the Northern Ireland W or WT (which were based on the Fowler tanks)

Surely it’s only the important missing locos that are going to get the enthusiasts to part with their money! As a GWR enthusiast I feel the 47xx being a small class of locos and just a modern 28xx is not worth building ( yes I know it’s not a completely new loco). Even diesel new builds are struggling the 63xx build has just been wound up as they realise the project won’t be finished till we’re all dead!
