Yup, I’m the guy in the red Iowa State singlet. I was an Iowa HS state champion in 1993 and wrestled at ISU for a couple years before retiring after my 6 concussion (most in HS football and wrestling.)

You think anyone in Dagestan does this? No. To get in wrestling shape, wrestle. Shadow wrestle. Roll around the mat with a partner at 25-50% intensity. Use bands to shadow wrestle. Outside of the wrestling room…maybe sprint hills. That’s it. Really dumb people spend all kinds of time outside of the wrestling room doing strength and conditioning sessions. Smart people wrestle to get wrestling strength and conditioning. Wrestle at varying intensities though. Practice your SKILL people. A big chest and big arms are cool, but that’s bodybuilding. The assault bike and SkiErg are cool, but that’s CrossFit. Are you a hybrid athlete or a wrestler? Look at Micic and Arujau’s arms. They are good because of their time on the mat. It’s a better investment if your time and money to find a better coach than the one you have and travel to train with him. Your coaching will make a bigger difference than a pull-up/burpee/box jump “conditioning”session.

I was an Iowa state champion in HS and received a division 1 scholarship from ISU before retiring from wrestling my second year in college after my 6 concussion sustained in football and wrestling. I know the Sandersons personally. Cody, Cole, and Cael were my teammates. I can guarantee they would disagree with you that Strength and Conditioning are a waste of time. I also have a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. Micic and Arujau are great wrestlers, but have recently lost to athletes who do strength and conditioning outside of the wrestling room. Ono smoked Arujau at the world championships and he has content doing S&C on social media platforms. He’s more powerful and explosive than Arujau and it shows. There are two major ways you can get faster refine your skills to make them more efficient and get stronger and more explosive through S&C.

How do you get involved in wrestling at 50. I wanted to wrestle in high school, but my parents were a loud & hard “no.” Then I got into the military & did 16 years, then college… I got into bjj & while I really love it, in the back of my mind, I still want to wrestle. Good on you for still doing it!

If you want to get into wrestling I would recommend you watch some of the great wrestling content available on KZbin and then possibly volunteer to help coach a youth team if possible.

Great video! i feel like the best accessory's are things that work the stability side of things, Im for sure going to try the weighted step ups! i usually do some split squats after each squat session. I started doing incline paused dumbell press after each bench session a few months back my strength shot up way more than usual on flat bench when i got efficient and smooth at dumbell press.

You really proved that you can be very lean & still gain strength at the same time. Restricted eating surely kept you young and healthy!
@markbrandenburg8 ай бұрын
It’s a balance between very modest increases in calories for 3 to 6 months followed up by 3 to 4 months of losing the gained body fat and maintaining LBM and ultimately strength. Over 30 years of repeating this method you get really jacked and strong. It’s not really flashy or exciting, but it almost always works. Be thoughtful and consistent with training over a long period of time and stay patient.

@markbrandenburg Жыл бұрын
Thanks. This lift was over 8 years ago. I did learn how to pull the slack out and cleaned up my form eventually setting National deadlift and total records in the UPA and USPA when I was still competing. It was incredibly hard do make 132 and to compete at a national and world level at 148 I'd have to start using gear. So I basically stopped competing, but still coach powerlifters.

Thank you. I'm challenging the common narrative that our health and athletic ability declines so fast that we are reduced to golf and other similar sports by the time we hit 40. I train a lot of middle aged adults to do the same in their respective sports. As far as injuries, they're inevitable and the best way to reduce or recover from them is to consistently strength train through a full range of motion and recover to the best of your capability between workouts.

@joedimaggio3146 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, quick question: what time of day do you train? And do you ever train fasted?
@markbrandenburg Жыл бұрын
I train when I can (between clients.) Usually early afternoon. I don't mind doing cardio fasted, but I prefer to eat at least once before weight/resistance training. If I don't eat before training my workout intensity drops and I tend to recover slower. Even if I consume the same amount of food in the day, if that makes sense.
