I wouldn’t boil water in that plastic bag probably not safe they aren’t heat rated your probably eating melted plastics
@zomie11115 ай бұрын
You can’t put ziplock bags in boiling water. Those plastics are not rated for that temp and you’ll be bleeding plastic toxins into you food doing that. That’s why most prepackaged freeze-dried meals are in Mylar bags.
@hkstrongside5 ай бұрын
Obviously you should do what makes you comfortable. In this scenario you are not putting the bag in water and boiling it. You boil your water and transfer it to the bag. By the time it hits the bag it’s no longer boiling and is just hot water. Ziplocks are made from polyethylene which is non-toxic. Good enough for me.

@hkstrongside8 ай бұрын
Ya, agreed. It is amazing how much space the original packaging consumes.
@KevinOutdoors10 ай бұрын
That doesn't make any sense. You are replacing the original packaging with Ziploc bags. You have to compare the weight of the original packaging with the weight of the Ziploc bags. The cozy bag is in addition to all your packaging.
@hkstrongside10 ай бұрын
It doesn’t make sense if you are going overnight for weight savings. Only for insulation. But over a multi day trip, shedding the oem packaging for a ziplock starts to save significantly and is definitely worth the work. Ziplocks are a fraction of the weight.

@hkstrongside Жыл бұрын
Waste as in paper packaging etc. But, to be realistic, it is such a very small amount, I am sure it is inconsequential to say the least. But, you can also just pack it out and send it to a landfill or to a recycling facility where they will burn it into something else. I prefer to deal with it myself so I don't have to pack it out. Using recyclable bags and such as much as possible helps reduce the impact on the environment for sure.

@@hkstrongside why not just put it in a ziploc bag? I'm really lost on the purpose of storing the bag inside another bag. The silver packaging stuff would be insta-cancer if you tried to eat from it, might as well just eat out of the ziploc. Please explain the silver homemade bag. It looks like its insulating, but you don't need to insulate a dehydrated meal.
@hkstrongside Жыл бұрын
@@joel.ha. Great question. So you store the actual food in a freezer ziploc bag. That bag is what you will pour your boiling water into. You then place it in this bag which will act as an insulator so that your food stays hotter longer while it rehydrates. You do not pour the food directly into this silver bag, that would be nasty. lol. From my experience where I usually hike over 10k feet it can get very cold and you do want to insulate your food. Using just the original packaging, often my food was luke warm at best. This system performs extremely well for me and saves waste and weight out on the trail. Cheers!
@joel.ha. Жыл бұрын
@@hkstrongside ohhhhh that makes sense, thanks for explaining! I always just use cold water so the idea of hot food is totally foreign to me loool
@BADazzJewelryCo Жыл бұрын
@@joel.ha.I didn’t understand this at first either over a year ago until I watched some Miranda in the Wild videos on here. If you’re eating hot foods, this methods saves on fuel also. So, imagine you’re making a dehydrated soup that would take 10 minutes to rehydrate but only 1 minute to boil. After that minute of boiling, you can place the water in the ziplock bag and the ziplock into the cozy to keep it warm as it rehydrates. Or you can let it sit for 10 minutes on your stove wasting 9 minutes of fuel burning. time. And as he stated in his comments, the food stays hotter longer allowing for a deliciously warm meal after being on trail for hours. You can also make these cozies for your cooking pots. Homemade Wanderlust has a great video on that. I’m now going to be making one for my water bladder as I prefer my water ice cold on day hikes and it should help keep my water cold for longer. Happy trails! 😊
