I enjoyed the video, and I especially love your pragmatic approach. I have several metal allergies, so I have to be careful. The only safe options so far have been sterling silver and 14-18 k yellow gold. I wanted to touch on "ethical diamonds": One organization (DeBeers) has a near monopoly on natural diamond mining. This group funds... what are essentially professional crime syndicates, which operate via slave labor in developing countries. This is where the term "blood diamonds" comes from. To top it off, diamond mining is extremely dangerous, potentially fatal... and the process is terrible for our environment. It's hard to appreciate the beauty of diamonds knowing that by purchasing them, you're funding a globalized industrial complex that perpetuates crime, slavery, death, and destruction. "Lab grown diamonds" have been pushed on the west as a convienient solution. I was skeptical. I looked into the process, and I'd like to share, as well as bust a couple big myths and marketing claims. 1) The phrase "Lab grown diamonds" is a misnomer. It would be more accurate to call them "Lab enhanced diamonds". These labs buy tiny mined "diamond seeds" that already exist, and "grow" them with chemicals. As you can surmise, this means "lab grown diamonds" still contribute to diamond mining. 2) Lab grown diamonds are not conclusively more "environmentally sustainable". The process involves weeks of exposure to chemicals, and the labs emit gases into the atmosphere. After reading about the processes involved in lab grown diamond production, I came to the conclusion that vintage/secondhand diamonds are the closest to "cruelty-free" as we get. You are re-using what already exists rather than buying something new and financially supporting the problem. Less demand = lowered supply.
