Here's my take on spike or angel.... Angel was good for her but after all the trauma that buffy went through in the first 3 seasons, they didn't really balance each other out. Angel had the weight of his grief and repentance and Buffy was shaken from the Angelus stuff and the general trauma that comes with killing monsters nightly. Their relationship was innocent and pure and so doomed from the beginning because of the world they live in. Then there was Riley who built her back up after angel and knocked her right back down again by leaving with like an hours notice and an ultimatum. I think I'm justified when I say "you ass". And then spike. Spike understood Buffy like no one else did, and although their relationship wasn't healthy in s6, you could see how devoted he was to her, and how much he loved her. He fell in love with her when she was at her lowest point, which really says something. And he tries so hard to help her after everything. The problem is that without a soul, he doesn't fully understand why she pushes him away. And knowing that he doesn't have a soul, Buffy feels that she can't love him, and she lies to herself extensively, telling herself that she doesn't love him when she really does. But by s7 Spikes soul is returned and she slowly breaks down the walls she built against him and lets herself love him openly, only says it a little too late I'm team spike if you didn't notice. Without a doubt in my opinion the first 3 Seasons of Buffy are iconic and the Buffy and Angel relationship was iconic it’s sad it didn’t last.
