This was a fascinating episode. Both Sheila Charrington and her husband deserve much praise and many thanks for preserving and caring for such a stunning piece of Tudor architecture. I was most interested to hear her theory regarding the deterioration that took place in the King's behaviour after Henry Marney died. Although historians concentrate on the year 1536, as well as the jousting accident, I think Sheila Charrington is correct. Under Henry the Seventh the collective skills of men such as Marney, Lovell, Cutts, etc., built a strong administrative foundation that was overseen by the King. Without the governmental infrastructure these men created, I doubt Wolsey would have been able to step into the role he did with such ease which, in turn, led to young Henry having more time for pleasure. Lord Marney, both as an administrator and 'father like' figure to Henry the Eighth is a truly important historical figure who is often forgotten - possibly because he managed to survive. Many thanks Sarah for sharing this enjoyable visit.

I lived and grew up in thornbury castle, went to school near the castle. Oddly not one person there seemed to care about it. As an adult I am more interested. Lots of interesting facts thank you.

I lived on Sheppey during my A Levels. One summer we went exploring Shurland Hall with some friends, who had just learned to drive. It wasn't being renovated and was still rather tumble-down. There were no floors left at all, you could see where fireplaces had been etc. The fish pond was large. Not much left to renovate really! This was probably 1990, 1991.

No wonder Leicester cathedral wanted the remains of the old king. What a cash cow it reminds me of when the cathedrals used to have relics of the old saint's to bring in money from the pilgrims. I really liked your 3 part pod casts on the anniversary of the Battle of bosworth field

This was a terrific broadcast. It managed to strip away time and conjure up the tense atmosphere that must have prevailed the night before the battle. Sarah, I thought the 'city sounds' in the background worked really well - almost like echoes from the past generated by Richard's men mixing with the townsfolk. Many thanks to Steve Bruce for his excellent narrative and many thanks Sarah for producing this great podcast - looking forward to part 2.

henry 8 was a cruel, heartless, self-absorbed, monstrous despot. He betrayed God, the Church, his wife, his daughter, many mistresses, his illegitimate daughter, his friends, and about 60 or 70 thousand of his subjects.

I just found this because I’m so interested in the history of the Mary Rose. It was a fascinating ship, and had been retrofitted with new cannons which could’ve been one of the major factors in syncing the ship. Due to the enormous weight.

Mediaeval England was rooted in Christ and in God way back but they seem to have lost that true identity and faith in the 20th and 21st century. It has become den of apostates as a nation, ready to be taken over by the Antichrist. (2Thess 2:3-8)

I agree 💯 per cent with what Owen said Henry wore Anne he was like a love sick school boy showering her with gifts and love letters poor Anne must have felt suffocated by his constant chasing also her Father Thomas Boleyn made matters worse by more or less forcing Anne to yeild to Henrys advances

Some of the tunnels under the castle were used as pistol ranges by local clubs and the police. They were blocked off when the area around Robin Hood’s statue was renovated recently.

It is a crime when poncy individuals come along who have zero interest in history and yet decide to change the very fabric of our heritage. This home should be protected structurally and visually forever!
