Thanks for the video! I got my Sony 18-105mm lens back in 2017 to replace the 16-50mm kit lens that came with my 𝛼6300. It's been a very good lens since. I originally got the camera and the 18-105 lens to shoot stills. But then, I found out from a colleague that both were really good for video when that colleague hired me and the camera to shoot some B-roll on a small commercial shoot. All these years that 18-105 has been my go to lens and has rarely come off the 𝛼6300. A few times I put the 18-105 on my old FS5 MkII. That combo really worked well for run and gun (fast auto focus) and the zoom worked as a true variable speed zoom with the FS5's zoom control. More recently, I have used the 18-105 lens with my FX30. The AI auto focus works great. The lens has proven its versatility by being able to shoot wide for doc style filming and then settling in with a longer focal length for sit down "formal" interviews. Today you can see that my Sony 18-105mm lens has been well used. It's scratched, dented and even got hit by a baseball once. It has worked in every type of bad weather from extreme heat and humidity to cold and rain, but continues to work great. The glass is clean and the inner workings -- focus, zoom, OSS -- still work fine. It's a testament to Sony's commitment to quality.

The 10-18 and 18-105 f4 OSS lenses are an essential pair for APS-C. Eventually add Sigma and Viltrox f1.4 lenses (16, 23, 30, 56)for night shooting and you have an almost perfect kit. Maybe add the Laowa 65mm macro if you like getting very close to subjects. But if I had to have just one lens, it would be the 18-105. In a single word - versatile. The 10-18 is better for vlogging, but most other things, the 18-105 is king.

I think its not about buying the camera its about picking the ecosystem. Because when you buy one of them you will invest into a brand. I like better the sony so i would 100% go with the a6400. You will get a lot of lens options and great autofocus etc… its really reliable. 😎👌

hey man trying to get into videography of america football games. i have the editing down as i’ve been doing it for around 3 years. i’m thinking of getting the a6400 myself and im wondering if it’s worth it. also, does the lens zoom enough to capture a single player or should i get a higher mm lens? thanks

I'm thinking of getting the sigma lens with the NEW Sony a6700, you mention it would work better in your description, is that because of the overall stabilization in the 6700?

Hi! Thank you for asking! Sure the a6700 works better than my a6400 with the sigma 16mm. 1) the a6700 has more resolution, so it would be sharper. 2) It has much better rolling shutter in 4k so your handheld shots would be better 3) The OSS can help you a ton

1/1250 seems pretty excessive for shooting inanimate objects, wouldn't you rather bring that ISO down to 100?

Thank you for asking! I'm not shooting 1/1250 because of the inanimate objects. I'm shooting this way because i'm moving all the time and usually i have to react quick. Otherways sometimes i found intresting subjects and i dont have enough time to scroll up my shutter. Than i leave it there. Thats why i shoot around 400 iso. It lifts the overall brightness and i could focus more to my subject. I never shoot in ISO 100. with 400 iso i'm so much flexible. And otherways ISO 100 is too clinical and clean to me. It's just street photography, it doesn't have to be perfect.

You can buy both for the same price. You should never buy a kit lens separately because its around 100$ if you buy it boundled with the camera and 3-400$ if you buy it alone. So If you concider to buy an a6400 new, i would suggest to buy with the kit lens. People usually sell their kit lenses for the same price then the new ones (around 100$). But if you find a used a6400 I would go for a used kit lens also. Its more affordable. So overall: Buy a complete new a6400 with a new kit lens in bundle or buy a used camera and lens. It depends on the camera's condition.

Hi! For apsc zoom, it depends on the situation. If i want to be compact: sigma 18-50 f2.8, If the range is the most important thing then sony 18-105. If i would go for the best value for the money then I would buy the tamron 17-70 f2.8.

You're welcome :) In budget i would use the 16-50 kit lens with good lighting. But if you have budget you could go for the sigma 16mm f1.4. But i would 100% go for a good light, because it would make your videos so much better. With shitty lighting the sigma would make really bad videos also. Lighting is king. :D Have a nice day bro ;)

I'm confused between the Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 and the Sigma 16mm F1.4. I just bought the Sony A6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens, but I'm not happy with the kit lens. I intend to shoot indoor videos and photography, so low light performance is important. Should I buy the Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 or the Sigma 16mm F1.4?

Thank you for asking! The sony 18-135 would perform the same as the 16-50 but with a little bit extended range. If you want better zoom lenses than go for the sigma 18-50 f2.8 or tamron 17-70 f2.8. Those are quie decent in lowlight. But if you want extreme good low light performance, than go for a prime like the sigma trio. 16mm 30mm 56mm 1.4. Otherways I don't know what would you shoot indoors, so if you have a chance i would use lights instead of buying better lenses. With good lighting a "bad" lens could produce amazing results. With bad lighting an "excellent" lens would produce shitty images :D. Lighting is the king!

Hello..I am looking for a lens for my A6700. Already have the Sigma 56mm f1.4. Would like to add something good and wide for landscape photography but at the same time have good low light performance and also be a good choice for Astrophotography. Would you suggest the Sigma 16mm or Viltrox 13mm? Note : Landscape would be mostly mountains,valleys and lakes

Hi! I would prefer sigma and tamron for third party lenses because of the autofocus. I heard a lot of stories about viltrox and samyang which was unreliable and the focus hunt a lot. I think for landscape the sigma 16mm could be enough, but if you want more room to play than i would go for the sony 11mm f1.8.

Thanks for asking! It was between the a7sIII and the a6400. In the a6400 i used the sigma 16mm f1.4 at f1.4 aperture and in the a7sIII i used the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 at f2.8. It looks kind the same. :D I hope it could help you :) Have a nice day!

after a year using this lens I really like it ( a nice budget lens for aps-c camera for my a6000 ) But if I have to say some cons, sometimes the focus takes time and the Aberration is very frequently problem ( at least in my case :) ) But still! Good lens.

Hi, Thinking to buy a6400, but also confused on a6700. The a6700 is out of my budget, and would need to wait atleast 3 4 months more. Also as this will be my first camera, not sure whether I should spend this much money in body alone. Planning to buy 50mm f1.8 with the a6400. Will use for both photo and video. Waiting for your feedback.

Hi! The a6700 is basically an upgraded a6400 you get bigger battery, In body stabilization, 10bit colors, and 4k 120fps and Ai autofocus. So if you ask me i would recommend the a6700 for long term. For video it's much better than the a6400. You'll grow out the a6400 so fast. I had an a6400 and after 3 years i felt that a little bit weak next to my other comeras. So a6700 more futureproof. But i would pick a more versatile lens than a 50mm f1.8 because it will be so limiting. You know if its a fullframe lens, than you will get a 1.5x crop if you use it on an apsc sensor camera like the a6700 or the a6400. So it will be around 75mm which is not versatile at all. I would go for the sigma 18-50 f2.8 . It's a great budget midrange all rounder lens. You will be thank me, because 50 and 75mm is so tight. You'll feel the tight limitations after a while. And usually people cant buy multiple lenses at first to cover all the focal lenghts. So a good zoom lens is a much better option. It's better to cover a lot of focal lengths (which looks also really good) than master 1 focal length and lose all the others. So if you ask me you should be a little bit patient. It will be much better in long term. I waited almost 2 years to get my bigger sony camera, and it worth every penny.

Thank you for sharing! I dont know how S&Q help with the shakes. If you mean slow motion, than you only have slowmo in FullHD (in the a6400) and i usually work in 4k..but sure it's just a preference. Yes, the gimbal could help..if you could bring one with you. I have 2 gimbals, so it would be logical to bring one of them with me. But when you're for example in a trip with you wife or with your friends, there is a chance you don't want to bring a gimbal to a plane and walk around in the city all day with your expensive toy... especially if you are for example bigger cities where there are many robbers. And if you're a hybrid shooter like me, than the gimbal could be a big problem. So overall, yes... the gimbal could help you, but not all the time it's the best solution.

Hi man, i rly appreciated the video ! I've a question, i want to do football pics and i was wondering if the apparture (f/4) had a too low exposure for evening/night match when there is not a lot of lights. Do you think this lens is still ok for that ? Thank you !

Hi! Thank you for asking. I think f4 here is not the best option in low light..but you have luck with football, because usually football players cant play in the dark, because they dont see the ball. So i think there is a chance that they have lights.

Szia a napokban vásároltam én is egy Sigma 16mm f1.4 obit használtan. A kép minőségével elégetett vagyok az autó fókusz is egészen jól teszi a dolgát. Feltűnt, hogy valamivel hangosabb a fókusz motor a többi lencsémhez képest. Ha kézzel adom meg neki a fókuszpontot (kijelzőn érintve) esetleg nagyobb a két pont közötti fókusz távolság kattanás szerű hangosabb hangot ad ki. (Ennyire hangosan állna be a lencse egyes esetekben?) Ez normális ennél lencsénél vagy esetleg nálam lehet valami gond? A képalkotásnál nem jelentkeznek problémák, a fókusz is gyors pontos, bár sötét témánál kicsit lomhább. (Összehasonlításképpen a Tamron 18-300 obim teljesen hangtalan hozzá képest.) A másik, ami még feltűnt, hogy a napellenző is kicsit mozog zárt állapotában is bár kopásra vagy túlhasználatra utaló jelek nincsenek rajta. (Samyang 12mm f/2 NCS CS obimnál is van némi mozgás új kora óta.)
