I agree with you on your viewpoints of the film. Personally, I think when the OG broadway cast comes up in the film, that I realized they stole the show and I would’ve preferred to watch a movie about them - meaning I felt like they were their own little movie within the movie. I also think that Wicked should’ve been adapted for film in 2005 or 2006, starring the broadway actors. The same how Little Shop of Horrors was adapted a few years after the stage play and starred Ellen Green as Audrey.
@MedusaYouTube8 күн бұрын
@@ronanobrien47 I totally agree. When the OG stars showed up even as different characters - i instantly wanted to see them as the characters not Ariana and Cynthia. I think Wicked should have been made ages ago too or perhaps an animated movie with the OG cast. Idk. Thanks for watching my video!
@ronanobrien478 күн бұрын
@ This is going to sound crazy - but I’ve had the exact same conversation with my brother that it maybe should’ve been an animated film with the OG cast, maybe in the style of the Shrek movies or even Tangled and Frozen! I think also it’s difficult to replicate the magic of the original Broadway run. I realize that hundreds of actors have stepped in and out of the roles, but there’s also this realization that ultimately Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth created the characters and that many people that played the characters later on channel their performance after them. Having seen the Broadway show I definitely picked up on that. I don’t know if you know anything about The Munsters franchise, but it suffers from the same fate where many reboots have happened over the last 40 years, but no one was able to capture the magic because it’s quite frankly a pale imitation of what came before it.

I have NOT seen the movie, but I did see the ending part, Defying Gravity. So although I cannot comment on the movie itself, I agree with you that this part specifically was odd and clunky. There are long gaps in between and emotional flashbacks, it just took me out of the scene because I kept wondering if or when she would even finish the song lol. And yea she kept going back, like "o yea btw, I forgot to tell you something"
@mariaantonia-op8qc13 күн бұрын
Just came back from the movie and I enjoyed it quite a lot! Although I do understand where your critics are coming from. (God this got long I'm so sorry) I already watched the musical countless times and was kinda skeptical going into this movie, but honestly? I think they did an incredible job translating it to a more cinematic language, specially the conflict with the animals, I thought that aspect came across much better here than in the stage play for reasons I won't elaborate or else this comment will turn into an essay djdjjdjdf. Ariana did a fantastic job as Glinda, she surpassed all my expectations... Her little gestures, the way she moved and danced, all of that screamed Glinda to me, but in a less theatrical way which was to be expected. The choreography for numbers was well done and the cinematography was also on point, I love that they let some scenes breath without the pressure of moving along as quickly as possible (something that is unfortunately rare these days) and although some scenes felt too busy at times, I do believe that's what was intended and it never became too overwhelming. I also thought the subtlety of Elphaba's expressions of emotion contrasted with Glinda's and the rest being so over the top worked pretty well for what the movie was intending to do, which was to demonstrate how removed Elphaba is from that world... It truly felt as if she was in a different film sometimes and I actually thought that was a clever idea, no one is taking things as seriously as her even tho they should and that creates a sense of discomfort and disconnect, however it could be argued that if that was the intention they could have portrayed it better since it distracted from the movie enough to be noticed, but not enough to present it's point clearly. I do also understand your criticisms of the musical numbers specially "defying gravity". While I appreciated the story cuts we had in between songs and I stand by my point that they translated them pretty well to the cinamatic language (also the added part to "one short day" gave me life and I loved it so much, if you're going to give me exposition do it in song and with that yummy fanservice dhdhhdf it was so good to see these two on the big screen), but sometimes it felt as though some choices had been made just to demonstrate how great their visual effects team was, not to elevate the story. It didn't bother me much, but I did feel it most on the ending of "defying gravity", my problem isn't with them cutting the song to give more space for character action, I actually liked a lot some of the added scenes, but on that number specifically they took away too much focus from what truly made the scene great to focus on the visuals and it ended up not being as effective as it could have, which brings me to the point I agree the most with you... I don't think they utilized the runtime as well as they should, this movie truly didn't have to be this long dhdjjdjdd. They added a ton of stuff that I enjoyed, but there's also a lot I thought was unnecessarily long to the point some scenes felt dragged and without bringing much to the table in terms of character or story development. Again, I do like that they let some scenes just breath and be longer, but it needs to have a purpose and some of them didn't. Overall still a great movie, I can't wait to cry rivers in part two when "for good" starts.

“Odd interviews” and it’s just two women being close (after spending the past years practically always together) and emotional about achieving their dream 😭 what’s really dramatic is saying this affected your view of the movie. I’m tired of women being ridiculed when they’re being vulnerable or in touch with their emotions, especially by other women.
@MedusaYouTube13 күн бұрын
@@yungmun4155 Being emotional is not what I find “odd” I understand that it’s their dream and I can appreciate that - it’s their level of emotion when it’s uncalled for and the whole thing about the poster too. As I’ve said in my video, my opinions about Wicked are in the minority and I wanted to share them to see if anyone else felt similarly. I personally think that if you are doing a press tour for the movie - it’s fair to comment on how that press tour went. It’s fine if you disagree with me but don’t put the fact that making a big fuss out of the poster in the first place and implying it was hateful and then going on tour and being in constant tears is a regular occurrence when actors are promoting a movie. It is odd but I never said that makes them bad people.

I agree with a lot of your points, especially about Defying Gravity! It’s the big show-stopping number - it should stop all the action, not be interrupted by it!!!! Let the girl freakin sing!!! I really wish the movie had used its runtime to get even deeper into how the mistreatment of Animals affects the world of Oz, so that Elphaba, no matter how understated in her portrayal, could have some actual motivation for defying the wizard. She’s a political defector! The audience needs to be sympathetic to her cause or else you run the risk of the story not making any sense. As it is, the disappearing of the Animals seems to hardly make a difference. However, I do disagree with your read on No One Mourns the Wicked - It was pretty much my favorite number in the movie. We get to see up-close how Glinda must mask her true feelings in order to appease the mob’s celebration, which is not really possible to do in the stage production. I think Ariana’s performance was quite moving in that regard.

I agree about how their performance felt really flat and stiff. Their singing is great together. They sounded beautiful but it felt like they were afraid to emote. I love Glinda’s chaotic energy and quirkiness on stage. Ariana’s Glinda felt like a stepford wife: very clean and calculated and robotic. Elphaba also felt very boring. Like she had no personality. It felt like she was a background character most of the time unless she was singing. It was slow and awkward especially in the first half. The second half felt like she started to really play her well but something was really still missing. I think this whole movie was poorly cast. I love Jeff Goldbloom and I adore Michelle Yeoh but they also didn’t have any energy in their acting. It felt like everyone was holding back. It wasn’t a terrible movie it was visually stunning and the music is iconic and the dancing was beautiful but overall the energy of the movie felt really lethargic and too calculated.

@alemobra5747 yeah towards the last half of the movie it felt like she really was starting to get into character. But in the beginning it was a struggle to connect with her. Very flat and monotonous but then she would sing and it felt emotional but then when the regular acting started it was very jarring the way she went from powerful emotional singing to a very stale acting. that whole it's me/unlimited in the middle of defying gravity was so annoying. i just wanted it to go on with it. I did love the movie, and I loved Ariana (i always liked the funny glindas better and I think it's only in part two that we get to really judge glindas portrayal). But I feel similar about Cynthia, she was just so mature? Even the way she says blonde, like she's tired, no cheekness. I saw people complimenting that choice but i just didn't get it. I only watched it once but I don't remember her screaming once. Although I do think that part of the issue was directing. While I'm not that girl is going on she's just there? literally just sitting there for the second verse, she sounds beautiful but the visual, the fire is not there. And nobody talks about it but nessarose/boq were a let down for me, not that I love them or anything, but I don't see her meaness at all, she's like Glinda not that good (not even elphabe is that good and i love that about the musical), but were supposed to believe that she does what she does in act II? I think their fear of making characters too superficial backfired a bit, because that's the play. But - like I said - I loved the film, far above what I expected, it sounds so good, and it looks great, so I can forgive the color grading and the weird acting choices. After all, I never watched it live, I can't I live in the middle of nowhere, but I've watched so many bootlegs over the years that the movie just feel like yet another to me, but with a better camera.

I felt the same way. I loved the visuals and the songs but Ariana and Cynthia left me underwhelmed. Ariana looks like she’s playing every character she’s ever played, a ditsy girl. Her voice quite surprised me for sure but there was so much flatness in her eyes, like she’s not alive? Then we have Cynthia who plays such an emotionally charged character and yet her face is just flat the entire time! When she sings the wizard and I she doesn’t feel excited she’s just smiling and that’s it but her eyes have zero expression or thrill. Every single time even when she’s supposed to be mad or frustrated or worried she looks so bland. It is what it is. Their voices are amazing however I felt like Cynthia was holding her voice down a bit for whatever reason. Who knows. I am unbiased because I don’t like musicals and I don’t like Ariana grandes acting (she’s always the same but her eyes are always dead) I didn’t know who Cynthia was until after this and I’m baffled.
