The story takes place in a small Brahmin village where a man named Naranappa dies. Naranappa was a Brahmin by birth but broke all the rules of his religion. He drank alcohol, ate meat, and lived with a low-caste woman, Chandri. When he dies, the village faces a big problem: who will perform his last rites? This situation creates a lot of tension because the Brahmins don’t want to follow tradition for someone who didn’t respect it. The main character, Praneshacharya, is a very learned and devout Brahmin. Everyone respects him and looks to him for answers. He is called the "Crest-Jewel of Vedic Learning." But even Praneshacharya struggles to decide what to do. This makes him question his beliefs and the traditions he has followed all his life. His journey reflects the fight between old customs and modern thoughts. One important moment in the novel is when Praneshacharya meets Chandri, Naranappa’s partner. She is kind and practical, even though the Brahmins look down on her because of her caste and gender. Praneshacharya gives in to his desires with her, and this incident shakes him deeply. He starts to realize that he is not as perfect as he thought and begins to question his faith and way of life. The novel also criticizes caste discrimination and the way women are treated. While the Brahmins argue over rituals and rules, it is Chandri who handles things practically by cremating Naranappa’s body. This shows how rigid traditions often ignore compassion and common sense. In simple words, Samskara is about change. It shows how strict traditions and outdated beliefs can make people’s lives difficult. It also explores the inner struggles of a person who questions his faith and identity. The story makes us think about what is truly important: rules or humanity. By blending religion, philosophy, and real-life issues, U.R. Anantha Murthy has written a story that is both timeless and meaningful.
