Hello, I'm new to the iOS music making world. I'm mainly interested in tools for "live" improv jamming, less so for production arrangement. With that in mind, what would you say is your favorite/best MIDI sequencer on the iPad? Hoping for something immediate and fun.
@AdamHardymaniOSMM5 ай бұрын
Hi, There are many great midi sequencers on the iPad now…it really does depend on what you are using it for. I don’t use that many so might not be the best person to ask! I use Atom2 for piano roll. Look at Fugue machine. Gestrument is amazing…. Ok, I forgot AudioModern Riffer. Hope that helps!

@frankscherbarth8641 cool, how are you connecting the rack to your iPad? 🤔
@frankscherbarth86415 ай бұрын
I'm sending every voice, delay...to my preamp (scarlet focusrite). The preamp goes via USB to the ipad. In AUM every chanel is showing up in the popup menu. I'm using a USB >>Lightning adapter. Crazy...wirh this thin cabels but it works awesome and sounds so much better then my analog end of chain...and it's so much cheaper😊

As I listened to this I wrote down: harsh, smooth, sharp, soft, weight, lightness, pressure, release. All those things that make you, sound like you. All balanced and curated to a coherent whole. It’s just wonderful, technically and musically. You are a maestro! Intrigued that you are heading into the Eurorack universe. I toyed with the idea before starting on the iPad route. I heard #CaterinaBarbieri and #KaitlynAureliaSmith and was captivated by the method and ethos, but not the learning curve. Will you be combining with the iPad or will they be separate? I would think midi to CV will be the first obstacle. I hope you will post your progression.

I’m loving the Eurorack ethos…the continuous flow of interconnectedness. The ever evolving, hands on, fragile nature. It’s got me! Never been a fan of linear DAWs and so the iPad morphing into modular seems obvious. Found a way in that’s not too daunting… Just bought a module to connect to the iPad so still waiting to try it. I will be posting my efforts, hopefully the iOS crowd will appreciate! Thanks for your comments on the track, I think I can leave Bleep for a while now 😊

When this appeared on Instagram late last night I was intrigued. Having a good listen to it today. I am amazed at the clarity. It’s astonishing that in a piece so busy and complex that nothing appears to be cut or truncated, which I sometimes find happening when using mute master. But not in your hands, the crispness of the individual sounds are outstanding. That crispness gives lots of opportunity for the space that exists between the individual pulses and notes and gives your music its uniqueness. It’s amazing! Another bullseye!
@AdamHardymaniOSMM7 ай бұрын
So glad you like this. It’s so simple it’s almost embarrassing! Bleep is the app I didn’t know I needed! Takes me back to my biggest influence in the glitch - Murcof ‘Mapa’ Easy to overdo and needs the right dynamics to keep it flowing but not much else. There’s more where this came from 😊👍🙏

@@AdamHardymaniOSMM It's almost like it was created for you. It's just perfect. Have just downloaded it and had a test flight and it's really good. Amazing that it was free! If someone did come to you and say what sort of app do you really need, what would you ask for?

It’s a tricky one, isn’t it. There are so many new apps coming out all the time and each seem to do things that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them. Have you seen the pre-release demo for Harmony Bloom that Doug did in #thesoundtestroom the other day? What I would really like to see is an update of gestrument which not only outputs channels to separate channels in AUM so they can be processed further but also to be able to see what you’ve played as almost a piano roll, so you can adjust it if you haven’t timed it correctly or put some notes where you didn’t want them. Looking forward to your own conclusions.

Very nice track and good advice. One thing I don't get with your AUM session is: why doesn't it choke, you have so much going on? I have a iPad Pro M1 with 16gb ram and too often I have to give up on ideas because the dsp max out. So, what's your secret? 😳🙂
@AdamHardymaniOSMM7 ай бұрын
No secret! My iPad seems to handle anything I throw at it!! Apart from some dsp killers (Tera Pro) it rarely gets troubled. Are you using a lot of automation/LFOs?
@Pxlhg7 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say a lot but I do use automation and LFOs (usually the ApeMatrix one, with 8 lfo's), Most often I get into trouble when editing live and as I understand it, some UI takes a lot of power. Well, it's weird anyway and I actually even swiped the disk and started over a while ago but to no avail. Thanks for the reply though, I appreciate that.@@AdamHardymaniOSMM

What buffer size do you have set in AUM?
@Pxlhg7 ай бұрын
I have experimented a lot with that section and when a project goes nuts I always try to raise it to 2048 and sometimes it lowers the limit so I can at least record. Usually I vary between 256 and 512 and on occasion even lower if I record my guitar. You?@@AdamHardymaniOSMM

How did that slip under the radar! That chord progression is gorgeous. It’s always gratifying to revisit something that you thought wasn't worth pursuing, and to discover, despite the passage of time, it’s still pretty good and worth finishing. But of course, finishing can be problematic. At what point is something actually finished. However, you seem to know exactly when to finish. Just magical. All those little incidental aural fireworks going off are amazing. I’m in awe how you generate and control them so perfectly. Wish I could find things as good as this on my iPad. I’m going to have a look, but I’m not confident.

I think it’s fair to say that distance is a good thing. Maybe sometimes I’m too eager to get a track filmed and on KZbin without giving it the proper time and space. So, with this in mind I’m leaving more tracks unfinished on the hard drive, waiting for a fresh perspective at a later date. I suppose the danger might be that I end with lots music that no-one ever hears but there’s always the ‘unreleased tracks’ album at some point 😜 Glad you,like the track, thank you for the feedback, I hope you find something to re-ignite! 🙏

If any other mortal decided to modulate all those parameters with LFOs, they would get a massive aural car crash that would sound horrific and be completely unusable. Heavens knows I’ve tried it on many occasions. But not you. The sound that emerges is coherent and majestic. That level of control, so that the chaos is kept in check is awe inspiring.
