The charging speed in the I5 is pretty quick. I could see it biting me by finishing the charge to 80% before I could get back out to the car if you had anything you needed to do at a stop. But if you are in a rush it seems like you could keep moving along nearly as fast as with a ICE. Those efficiency numbers you were getting were pretty bad though. Would be nice to be able to stretch out some longer distances between charging stops when trying to make good time.

Glad you enjoyed your trip through God's country. And in an Ioniq 5 no less!! We just got a '24 Ioniq 5 SEL RWD on April 2 and love it. One road trip so far. FL to OH to IA and back to FL. It makes road trips almost as fast as a gas car. And I love the comfort but my wife complains about the lack of lumbar support in the manual passenger seat after several hours on the road. As for the air conditioning anomaly you encountered while charging, we've had something similar happen but not enough times to actually get a handle on what's circumstances lead to what conditions. But since the battery and cabin cooling are shared, I can see how a hot battery would take priority over a hot cabin. But usually, the car is ready to go by the time we've finished "going" so to speak. Once back on the road, the battery seems to cool down in just a few minutes. You can see the power to the HVAC dropping in the electrical usage screen on the infotainment. It's far from a perfect car, but it checks most of my boxes. Glad you liked it too.

Thanks for your videos! We have a ChargePoint home charger, and I have the ChargePoint app on my phone, to set the charging schedule. I am having trouble getting our VW ID 4 to charge correctly. I have set the ID 4 car schedule set to exactly match the ChargePoint charging schedule (both start and end times), which is as midnight. But the VW 4 is only charging 11 miles an hour, rather than 31, although we have a 40A ability on the ChargePoint. At one point, it was charging at 31 miles per hour, but now it's not. (We also have a Tesla, and I like to have both cars charge starting at midnight.)

From what i understand, fix-a-flat does work too well on tires made specifically for EVs because of the foam inside to reduce road noise. So you should use a repair kit to plug the hole and then use a portable air pump to inflate the tire. Now, i have had to do this yet....knock on wood.

I think most vehicle owners never touch thier spare (either never needed or not wanting to bother), so the manufacturers figure why waste the money and the space / weight. Also fix a flat is great in a pinch but is very specific on what leaks it works on and also makes a real mess for the guy at the shop who changes your tire.

My wife's Leaf has had 2 flats. And the first one I used to fix a flat that came with the car. It didn't work. We had it towed to Discount tires. They actually fixed it for free. 2nd time was due to a screw in the side. I was able to get enough air from the provided air pump and got it to Discount tires. But when it's on the side they don't repair it. So had to get a new tire. The last few cars we have had didn't have a spear. I really don't have an issue with the tow. Yes it takes time to get it done. But you can live with it.

I'm getting closer to figuring out the best value involving this HUD in the used market. I've since found out there is this Bluelink version, which I guess was it's own trim starting in model year 2000. This trim has the HUD, but if I'm correct in my memory even the 2000 model year in the SEL trim won't have it: see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXq1gK1sbKinlbc I'm assuming this trim is also less expensive than the Limit trim with the leather interior and sunroof, which I'm not putting a high priority on myself personally, I am however being pushed into a higher price it seems for the 2020 model years to get this HUD, but at least I also get the 11KW level 2 faster charging speeds, which is a huge plus in my book.

Impressive how you were able to cover so much from just a rental. We've had our '24 SEL RWD for less than eight weeks. We did a roughly 3,400 mile trip a couple weeks after getting it and it is an amazing road tripper. It's now about to turn over 5,000 miles. But, as you said, there are a few things they should have done differently or that they can improve. HDA2 was nice, but not perfect. The main bugs are a tendency to hug whichever side of the lane has a car in the next lane. It also prefers to keep the tires thumping on the reflectors when navigating a gentle curve. And finally, it kept nagging me to put my hands on the wheel when they had never left the wheel. You need to fight the self steering a little so it knows you're there. Capacitive sensing would have been much better. Or monitor the driver's eyes like GM's Super Cruise. It also needs a manual control for battery preconditioning. Preconditioning only works when you have a charger set as your destination in the car's nav system. There were two times on our trip where it should have activated and did not. Also, it only works with the car's nav and that means you cannot use Google Maps or Apple Maps. I agree that the bolsters are a little on the tight side, but not uncomfortable for me. At least I didn't find myself slouching to one side like in our Bolt EUV which has wider spacing for the bolsters. Infotainment is super responsive, but does seem a little obtuse when you're looking for a setting. And lots of people complain about the speedo being behind their left had rather than in the center. Not a real problem for me, but the center would be better. And finally, every time I open or close a window, I toggle the child safety locks with the heel of my hand. We don't often have people back there, but the time we did, I had them locked in and didn't know it. I totally agree with your comment on the DCFC pin cover. I'm going to have to modify that. It was the single biggest pita on our trip. A very minor pain, but a kind of a Chinese water torture kind of a pain, that has no excuse. But on the important points of comfort, efficiency, range, charging speed ... a home run.

Most people overestimate how much range they need on a daily basis and therefore, how much charge they need. I have used level one for 6 years with my Leaf. And I have the timer set for 5 hours, from 2AM to 7AM. That gives me more than enough electrons for my daily commute plus some side trips here and there. We have cheap off-peak rates, so I spend about 85 cents a day to charge at home. Do I care how fast its charging from 2-7 while I'm sleeping? - NO. The very odd time that I need a top-up during the day, we have Level 2 chargers all over the city. Some are free to use while shopping, dining etc, and the city had a bunch of Flo chargers installed that cost 1.50 per hour to use, so I might spend 50 to 75 cents a month on public charging. D.C. fast charging is almost never necessary - saves money and battery life.
