There is no accounting for taste. I didn't understand the point of the question about the color of a photo from a modern camera - after all, it can be adjusted in a photo editor, just like contrast or white balance, etc. In the end, you can make a special press for yourself and calm down. But if they miss the focus, the photo is trash.
@bytomw
@bytomw 19 күн бұрын
You’d think so. But even with modern editing tools getting the look you want quickly and without spending more time that a clients budget allows can be a challenge. You CAN make any camera look the way you want. In the end it’s about efficiency for me. Also more and more clients are setting briefs based on a mood more than a specific set of technical requirements, it kind of means that critical focus matters much less than it used to (although personally I prefer having a solid AF performer for most of my work).

This a brilliant interview! Licensing in particular is a really difficult monster to tame. For instance you licence an image for 2 years, then when the client renews you also have to also negotiate a new licence with the models that appeared in that image! Also, finding your niche can be really hard for instance I have taught myself how to light and shoot most genres and seem to have fallen into the 'lifestyle' genre which is a word that seems to cover a lot of things. It's the largest genre on most photo agents platforms (i.e. Photopolitic, Wonderful Machine) with the largest number of photographers doing it. It's also a word that I don't particularly like. I'm really at the stage where I should niche more. I really love Barry's insight and the great questions Tom.

Thanks Chris, Honestly I really like the term lifestyle. To me it's so broad because there are so many different lifestyles to cater for. The images and the visuals that we see in this category need to be broad to help us see more of ourselves in the images. I totally get the frustration though, it's hard to get seen among so many others!

True, there are different areas within Lifestyle ie lifestyle fashion, outdoor lifestyle etc. It can be broad but I think you have to find your niche within it or marketing is difficult … and that’s where I am, I shoot fashion, environmental portraits, cars. Whilst the variety is great, I think I’m going to have to niche more to help me progress.

I really love the gfx system. I can get so much more out of adapting lenses, and adapting lenses designed for bigger systems. I think we need more native lenses for the system, the only native lens I have is the mitakon 65mm and that's 3rd party. If someone made a nice 35mm f1.8, maybe even f1.4, I'd be very happy.

Yeah, I can confirm, Sony colors do suck, all A1-7 models are terrible, except Sony A9 series, which has quite different colors. Looks like Sony A1-7 are developed by color blind people. There is no real fix for that.
@bytomw
@bytomw 29 күн бұрын
It can’t be a sensor issue though because everyone but Canon is using them. Even Fujis have Sony made sensors. (Like the GFX 50s)
@ElementaryWatson-123
@ElementaryWatson-123 29 күн бұрын
@@bytomw two things to remember, Sony offers fab for custom designs as well, so not all Sony sensors are the same. Secondly, every company has it's own CFA designs and processing of sensor data -- all raw files are cooked to some degree. Even if you take Fuji cameras their Bayer sensors show distinctly different colors than their X-trans, even when the sensor chips are the same. CFA plays an important role in color separation, especially in a very narrow orange/yellow spectrum, where red-green channels have large overlap and separation is tricky. Many types of color blindness in people are due to cones missing, or having sensitivity issues, or having slightly off color profile. People don't even know they are color blind until tested.

No mention of the 50mm F1.0 from Fuji while you keep saying fujifilm can’t give the same portrait bokeh…
@bytomw
@bytomw Ай бұрын
The 50mm F1.0 is a 75mm F1.5 equivalent. You could get the same depth of field from an 85mm 1.8 that’s smaller lighter and focuses more accurately than the Fujinon. I don’t enjoy shooting short tele lenses as much as normal/wide lenses but if that’s your thing that’s cool. If you discount the focal length of a lens and just want to look at depth of field alone Fuji also make a 200mm F2.0 you might want to try.

That’s not the case. All lenses render detail differently. More detail is absolutely NOT always better. @@bytomw A softer in focus area is one thing, but missed focus often plainly look bad. Most cameras add sharpness. You can turn this off if you prefer a more analog level sharpness. @@TheDavveponken I have been on mirrorless since the launch of the Sony A7ii. It’s fantastic for achieve critical focus regardless of system (although fujifilms autofocus is currently broken so tread carefully). That said as critical focus gets easier it gets less important and people start looking for alternatives there is a huge trend towards less sharp less in focus images because they have a “vibe”. With the first series of images, I was quickly able to pick out what images came from which cameras. The green undertones in the skin gave away the Sony. It's one of the things that made me switch back to Canon after a month, and that was even when I didn't have images from other cameras to compare against. It just stood out to me... especially on darker skin tones. The GFX had more depth and 3d pop to it, and I thought it had the most pleasing look out of all three due to the mix of color and character. The X-H2s had the most accurate skin tones, but in my opinion, lacked some character when compared to the GFX.
