There are a lot of similarities between Joe and Jose, but the strongest connection is in the clip in this vid. Both Joe and Jose fought against a heavier fighter in an underground ring before they ever went pro. Joe fought Rikishi in prison, while Jose fought Murakima, a lightweight fighter, in an underground ring in Mexico. However, the way they both handled their fights is completely different. Joe fought Rikishi to a draw, yet he would have probably lost if it weren't for his cross counter. Jose however managed to beat the crap out of Murakima with pure skill and strength. Assuming both Jose and Jose were around 15 years old when they both had their fights, a 15 year old Jose would smack the hell out of prison arc Joe
@MrSuperstargamer9 ай бұрын
The difference that you might be overlooking is that this scene implies that Jose had proper training prior to his fight while Joe has barely started getting the ropes of it; he didn't exactly learn the importance of defense or footwork, so in terms of skill, they wouldn't be equal in the slightest at that point in time. Another difference may be the rival between Murakima and Rikiishi. I mean, we don't know much about Murakima himself but it's undoubted that Rikiishi has done some arguably inhuman feats such as knocking out bulls with his bare hands not to mention surviving his hellish weight loss, but that's after the fact. No doubt that younger Jose would be a menace to Joe at that point but I just feel there's a lot more to take into consideration, in my opinion.
@crabohato49549 ай бұрын
@@MrSuperstargamer those are some pretty good points. But here's what I think after doing some rethinking. Jose and Joe have repeatedly been presented as being complete polar opposites, and it's even made a point in their fight. Jose fears growing old and dying due to him having a family, while Joe doesn't mind dying against Jose while also showing no desire in starting a family or getting married. So what I personally believe from a narrative perspective, is that these polarities very well carry on in their fighting styles. Jose from this clip might be seen as a highly skilled fighter, relying on footwork and technique to perfectly dodge and beat his opponents. Joe against Rikishi on the other hand, relied more on his incredible endurance to set up his cross counter. Jose is a near untouchable fighter who can weave and dodge heavier opponents before smashing them with his strength, while Joe is an insanely tough fighter who can tank heavier opponents before finishing them off with his immensely strong counters. I think a hypothetical fight between their younger selves would come down to these 2 questions: can Jose tank Joe's punches, despite not being able to take hits well, and can Joe hit Jose before he's beaten the same way Murakima was
@crabohato49549 ай бұрын
There's also the matter of weight classes, cuz it's actually pretty important in this conversation. In this clip, it was specifically stated that Jose appeared to be lighter than a flyweight, yet punched harder than a bantamweight. And although it isn't specifically stated how hard Joe's punches are, he beat the shit out of Nishi like 2 times, who was probably well above 6 feet tall and had to go on a huge weight loss journey to go middleweight. So for all intent and purposes, Jose could have had the strength of someone well above a lightweight despite maybe being either strawweight or atomweight, while Joe might be close to having heavyweight level strength, despite being bantamweight. I however feel like I'm extremely high balling Joe's strength here.
@MrSuperstargamer9 ай бұрын
@@crabohato4954 I mean, you might be right. I forgot about Joe's fights with Nishi, and the fact that at one point in their first scuffle Joe threw the hell out of him from across the cell (starting with his leg) but yeah, these guys are monsters in terms of raw strength from wherever you look at it. I feel like it's kinda hard to just determine wether young Jose would've easily clapped Joe at his prison arc or he would've essentially ended up with a similar conclusion to Rikiishi's first fight, but either way, it would be interesting to imagine.
@MrSuperstargamer9 ай бұрын
@@crabohato4954 Also yeah, it's interesting to see it from a narrative perspective and I very much love the fact that their personalities seep into their fighting styles, and that's a pretty good question by the end. The hypothetical fight would boil down to unpredictability seeing how Joe has carried most of his fights in the ring, being the underdog for most of the time and suddenly being able to push through and finding a solution, despite his lack of skill. So I would still say it's 50/50 in this instance.
