@mossicely18 күн бұрын
I absolutely agree with you and really hate how everyone just says it's an attention span thing, despite the fact that it's been getting longer over time. I'm not a tiktok type of person, I mostly engage with long form content, and I don't consider myself to have any attention difficulties, but there's a point where it becomes way too much. If I can avoid it, I don't want to have to pause or leave a movie to get up to pee. I don't want to begin to get uncomfortable sitting in the same position for hours on end, feeling like I need to get up and stretch my legs or something. When your movie starts to go beyond about 2:30 I start to think about it differently when I'm planning to watch it. Pushing it off, carving out larger and larger chunks of time in my schedule, reducing fluids before, etc. If writing is good, you can do a lot with minimal time. So many movies are BRILLIANT and they're like 90 minutes. I appreciate those films far more. This isn't saying every scene in every movie has to rush or be fast paced, but it needs to convey information intentionally without being unnecessarily redundant. Like you said, I'm not saying long movies are bad. I love the extended cuts of Lord of the Rings. Seven Samurai and Godfather Part 2 are both amazing examples of long movies that fly by. I actually thought Oppenheimer was very well done for how long it is. If the content is necessary to the story, include it, but it needs to justify its runtime. The more content you add, the more things can go wrong. Making your movie long and then having parts that don't hit is a sure way to make your audience start to grow fatigued. For anything in life that you're selling, you always want your audience to be left wanting more, not wishing it wrapped up an hour ago. I'll be the one to say it if nobody else will, it's something that in recent years I've grown to dislike about many of Scorsese's films. Not just Irishman, Casino I think is another movie that doesn't need to be nearly as long as it actually is. Killers of the Flower Moon is I think my favorite of his longer films, but even that has fat that can be cut. To me Taxi Driver is the best film he ever made, and it's also the shortest. Raging Bull is only 2 hours but I thought it had redundant scenes that could have been shorter. The frustrating thing is also when a movie is long and you don't enjoy it. Every slight on a long movie for me has a 2x frustration multiplier. If I watch a bad 90 minute movie, I could watch a whole other good 90 minute movie before Killers of the Flower Moon even finishes. That's not an attention thing, that's just the reality of time management when you're busy.

If the movie FEELS long, its a bad movie. Length doesnt matter. There hasnt been a 100 hour movie that was ever good. In terms of short movies, its a bit different. Great short films exist. And terrible feature length films exist that just suddenly end leave you wondering wtf was all that mess.

I think that the golden standard for long movies was the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Lastly the only 3h movies that didn’t bore me to sleep in the theater were the Dune movies and the freshly released Count of Monte Cristo. What do they have in common ? They’re book adaptations. And we’re talking about massively popular classics. I think that the only stories worth spending 3h+ in a theater are those masterfully crafted by a professional writer. Stories so dense that you have to remove stuff to make it watchable.

Some movies need extra time some need less. Run times don't matter to me if the story is told correctly. The main issue is with editing and pacing. You could watch a 5 hour movie and if it holds your attention and keeps you wanting throughout I don't think you would really notice.
