UPS gets my deliveries wrong about 1/4 of the time. They photograph the package when delivered and its usually so blurry most human beings would never be able to tell what they are showing. I've been lucky enough to know what my neighbor's front door color is so sometimes I can tell they dropped it there. My address number I post at my front area are each 8" tall numbers so you really need to make an effort to misdeliver to a house on my same block. So I always select USPS or FedEx over UPS if I can. In my area sometimes USPS drops off UPS packages and so far so good when they do that. Which brings up a point---check with your post office with the tracking number to see if they were the ones that "delivered" it.

Also the house rule Artillery movement is sort of like the Optional rules in the Napoleon Overruns Piedmont study folder (V1.62) but maybe not as punishing as the OSG optional text if arty can't retreat. This Piedmont Study folder also seems to give the best rules (most complete to me) for Roadblocks. All previous study folder versions for roadblocks either didn't lay out the rules well enough for my taste so those are the ones I apply for this series regardless of the game if roadblocks are in play.
@sonsofliberty7526 күн бұрын
I need to pull those rules out and read them. I think the house rules on artillery is definitely more realistic and forces the player to scrutinize the placement of their guns; or risk losing them due to retreats forced over rough terrain.
@jimastro6718 күн бұрын
@@sonsofliberty75 It looks like Kevin Zucker as of late 2023 recommends the ones in the Napoleon's End Study folder (available on his OSG website) as the latest & greatest version for roadblock rules. These expand on the Piedmont version and give the method of how you attack them in Standard Combat & if needed, by shock combat by defining the strengths & initiatives. These latest allow any kind of combat unit (not just infantry) to do adjacent attacks (no charges or bombardments) and also changes attack type to standard combat against a SP=1 and, if a shock result is obtained, assume an initiative of 3. So, it at least seems like a complete set of rules whereas other versions seemed like they were missing info.

Back in the day, making an orderly tactical withdrawal while under fire without disordering was very unlikely. Reserve units had to move up and take the withdrawing unit's place in the line. The units falling back would naturally be disordered as they made way for the reserve units which were to replace them. Source: Internet search and some of my own Napoleonic books. By the way, really enjoying the play-throughs! Now I want to track down a copy of Talavera!

11.7.1 Disordre: A unit in Disordre has all-around facing (6 front hexes). Units in Disorder subtract three from the dice whenever they check morale. The printed fire, melee, and movement values of units in Disorder are halved. Units in Disorder are marked with a Disordre informational marker. During the Reorganization segment of the Chronology of Battle a unit in Disordre must attempt to recover good morale. Exception: Units that are adjacent to enemy units. These units remain in Disorder and do not check morale. A unit in Disordre that fails to recover good morale automatically becomes Plus Grand Disordre and conducts rout movement. The moment a unit becomes Disordered it moves away from the disordering event at half its movement rate (round fractions down. See Retreat After Combat). 5th Edition of Regulations

Like you, I do see the Confederate Initiative Special Scenario Rule (automatic initiative) for the Hornet's Nest 16.5 as a bit confusing. It is unclear to me also if it lasts the whole game. In another Scenario 16.6 Grant's Last Stand, it has a similar rule but for THAT one it has slightly different wording. I am interpreting 16.6's scenario to be just the first turn versus the whole game and 16.5 to be the whole game.

I haven’t been doing the casualties correctly. On the chart when you have a half result, you have to roll a dag to determine whether or not that round up or down. Then if you do have any kind of loss, numerical loss, then you have to roll for stragglers and that’s based on the units morale level. The final thing that you have to do anytime that you take a loss is you have to have a morale check. I’m glad I caught this early so that you know from here on out I can get it correct.

I've seen some question, like you, the +1DRM for infantry when attacking a square. Uwe did respond saying his intent is "Assaulting a square makes it harder for the attacker." He didn't go into detail why but some supposed that being in square would make the troops more resilient to retreat so they get this bonus even when assaulted by infantry. However, they also note that when the square is doing defensive fire they are not as strong as in line so there is a drawback to being in square when defending against infantry. This would prevent game players from always putting their troops into square regardless of who is attacking them. Not sure if you think this will be the case but you have played A LOT more than many.
@sonsofliberty752 ай бұрын
I am really perplexed with the +1 drm for infantry assaulting a square. Armies did not deploy into squares at anytime vs enemy infantry. The square has four sides and thus the strength of the unit on any one side is quartered. The idea of the infantry in square holding their position vs enemy infantry due to increased morale was not so. Of course artillery can be used to pound a square to mush, but infantry in line could also have a devastating effect. The simultaneous fire rule gives these infantry squares too much control on the battlefield. Assaults are regarded as close firefights. In such situations, the infantry in line would inflict enough casualties to cause the infantry in square to retreat and redeploy.

In the initial print of Stonewall's Sword the map didn't include the reference elevation numbers (1,2,3...). You were meant to discern relative elevation by color changes only making it extremely difficult to figure out what was blocking what. In the 2nd release of it they added those elevation numbers to match their other other games and it has helped immensely. I think they blend in well with the map art. I ended up buying another copy of Stonewall's Sword just to get the map updates. That was OK because some of the other info markers on my now duplicate counter sheet are handy to have. I appreciate the improvements the system has made in the maps and rules. I also like that you can purchase extra counter sheets from Revolution Games just to get some extra info counters too and that their website allows you to download rules, scenario books, and errata.

@jimastro672 ай бұрын
I think you are playing it right. There was a FAQ I once saw on retreats in this game and its sister Shiloh game you have. The designer Martin Wallace said that boundary border limits do not affect retreats (we assumed he just meant non-zero numbers because of an explicit rule about "0" borders). So, borders with a 1 or 2 CAN allow 3 or more units to retreat into its area. As you stated the rules did say "you cannot retreat across a 0-border, or into an area with enemy troops, or from your headquarters area. If a unit cannot retreat, take damage instead". So a "0" border means impassable by every one even if it is the shortest path back to its HQ. The interesting thing about retreats is that the retreater needs to take the shortest path (non zero) back to his HQ/center of operations, so you can force him to retreat into your unit areas causing him damage/elimination. This is like more complex hex encounter games when you force a retreat through an EZOC you control.

@sonsofliberty753 ай бұрын
That is a good question. I don’t think it is addressed in the rules. Most rules in hex and counter games do state that units forced off the map may not return. I’ll need to examine the rules to see if that issue is answered.
@jimastro673 ай бұрын
I noticed there are several units at the edge of the map. If they are forced to retreat off the map do they get eliminated or can they return?
@sonsofliberty752 ай бұрын
Jim, I examined the rules in regards to retreating off map. Section #24 explains retreats. Nothing is mentioned concerning retreats off the map. If a friendly blocks a retreat that unit retreats far enough to allow the retreating unit to retreat. If a unit cannot retreat due to terrain restrictions or enemy units, the unit must take SP losses up to the number of retreat hexes unable to fulfill (unit has 6 MP and unable to retreat, the unit takes 6 SP losses). Various rule systems deal with this issue in a variety of ways. I would say that you are free to choose how you handle it. I find the freedom, liberating. Personally, I would consider units forced off the map to be out of play and recognized as eliminated; a loss of 1 fatigue cub for each such unit.

I often wonder about playing games of this Austerlitz battle solo and, in the US Civil War, Chancellorsville, solo. It seems like a replay of these battles, to get closer to real history, is so dependent on the element of surprise that occurred, that solo won't represent the true feel. No doubt it is a beautiful game and the mechanics and gameplay seems fun though.
@sonsofliberty753 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct on your assessment of the factor of surprise being eliminated in solo play. I find that playing historically will enlighten the history of the battle. don't you find the rules too vague and confusing for fire/assault/retreat that you have to make up house rules to move forward? Since counterattacking is not possible in defensive orders, forcing attack orders to be used for defense? The adjustment for cavalry is nice but infantry formations can't "reaction defend/counter attack" from any formation. thanks for the vid.
@sonsofliberty753 ай бұрын
I think part of the vagueness and confusion you refer to is due to translation from one language to another. I do think the rules need minor editing, reorganization, and clarification. Vive L’Empereur series by Compass Games has similar issues regarding rules; also a translation problem. I would blame my own interpretation and application of the rules to part of the confusion in these videos. I play so many Napoleonic systems that in my mind I’m mixing the rules.
@marchanna3 ай бұрын
@@sonsofliberty75 It's not that I saw you make errors in your application.
