I just bought 1997 GL1500 SE from the first owner and only 15k miles on it. Great bike in general just front end suspension wise feels very stiff. Whilst on the ride I observed the front forks travelling up/down just fine but it still feels almost like the front end has no suspension at all. Is this normal on these Goldwings or perhaps a fork oil renewal would improve ride a bit?
@AdventureJeff26928 күн бұрын
I'm not sure. I haven't owned the bike in a few years now. I remember mine riding very plush. I remember the forks taking a small air charge at like 4-5psi through a shrader valve on the top. Remember that bike is almost 30 years old, likely every seal on it is dude for refreshment and forks could I'm sure use new fluids and seals.

Make sure calipers aren't seized is step one om those bikes. Then it's just pads and rotors.. Upgrade to stainless lines for better feel, upgrade master for even better feel. Then you can go to a radial setup if you really need more feel.

Hey, Jeff. I have a 2000. Keep getting clutch issues. Can you tell me about the mod?
@AdventureJeff2692 ай бұрын
There are a few things to check first. Pack thickness as assembled needs to be measured with calipers. There is a range it needs to be in spec. Then make sure cable hasn't stretched or adjusting will be tricky. The mods I did were for clutch oiling purposes for drag launching. I also upgraded to the B model clutch since A models are a bit known to explode.

Love watching you ride the 990 on this stuff and your commentary. Nice to listen to while working. You're right that the Road Glide would open up a whole world of mods and customizations even if you don't care for anything more than a cam (Andrews and Feuling are great options imo). These new M8 counterbalanced engines are pretty neat. Though there is something about a Goldwing and the "what you get is what you've got" that seems pretty freeing. Goldwing is one of the king mile-munchers out there as you probably already know! And most importantly... "you meet the nicest people on a Honda"

@@AdventureJeff269 my recommendation is that you already have the 990 so unless you want to transition from the 990 to like a triumph tiger 1200 or bmw 1300gs or something to let you tour more effectively and comfortably while preserving that offroad capability (I don’t see the point in a cruiser for you, modern touring bikes can easily be crazy comfortable especially with highway pegs added) then just get a talaria, it’s cheap, fun, and weighs 160 lbs, if you want more hardcore options there are a lot of e dirtbikes that will outdo any dirtbike on the market at this point (like a starkvarg with 80hp at 235lbs iirc)
@AdventureJeff2692 ай бұрын
The 990 isn't really cruiseable anymore. The suspension is crazy stiff for long road trips now, shorty mufflers, no windscreen, and full knobbies. It's sounds like a monster truck, and my ears ring after about 20 minutes at highway pace. I really only ride pavement when I'm lost and trying to get back to civilization lol. It's basically a huge dualsport now. Which is how I love it.

The starving is sick, but I'm not sure i want to invest that much. The talaria looks decent from some quick googling I have done, so thanks for that suggestion!

What gas mileage do you get offroad? I have a 950 and I'm always obsessed I run out of gas. 😃
@AdventureJeff2693 ай бұрын
I'm not sure exact mileage as far as mpg. I get about 100-120miles until reserve light comes on if I'm strictly offroad. I also have Rottweiler intake, cans, and power commander tuning ed fairly rich. I would guess my mileage is worse than most. I will say I have done 28miles on the fuel light before so you have a decent bit of range left at that point.

I also have an 04 zx12r. It is an experience that can not truly be described with words. Unfortunately I believe it has now broken me, as I don't know if any other motorcycle could fully satisfy me at this point. There are very few other motorcycles that have quite the amalgamation of character elements that the ZX12 brings to the party. The speed / power of course is what sets it apart from the pack, but it is able to carry this power in a sleak lovely package. Tho its heavy, its feels very stable at speed, and not too stubborn in the turns. Best of all, unlike its arch nemesis, the Busa, It doesn't look like a bulbous monstrocity moonlighting as a Sportbike??? For me, even if the power was lacking, the ergonomics which are akin to a slightly oversized sportbike, makes for a much better sized motorcycle. (i.e. legroom, seat position, etc.,) .............A masterpiece of Engineering & Aesthetics in my book!!

Did you find out what it was ? Maybe a load of dust in the air filter ? An old trick to stop fine particles clogging up the air filter is to get some pantyhose and put them over the inlet (they act as a larger particle screen). When clogged, take off, shake out and repeat. Not sure what your inlets look like. This trick is used a lot in back road desert runs on SUV’s and Dakar races. It’s also used in volcano eruption areas due to the ash in the air. If it happens again, try starting and sniff the exhaust as it turns over. If it smells rich then likely air blockage (assuming your engine has been serviced recently and was running right). Maybe all the free-wheeling rattled the dust off the air filter ?
@AdventureJeff2694 ай бұрын
No it wasn't dust. It wasn't really dusty that day and I didn't follow anyone so not likely.. I have a Rottweiler intake with a freshly cleaned and oiled filter and a super dense pre filter over it. That is a good idea though, but wasn't the issue this time.
