HMS Glowworm if I recall correctly. Tried torpedoes on the Hipper and missed. She actually rammed the Hipper and impudently hit her with her remaining guns. Her Captain got the VC posthumously. The ship was sunk.

Rate of fire _Belfast_ 8 RPM/Gun x 12 Guns = 96RPM Rate of Fire _Prinz Eugen_ 5 RPM/Gun x 8 = 40RPM Shell Weight _Belfast_ = 51 kilograms x 96RPM = 4896 kg / minute Shell Weight _Prinz Eugen_ = 122 kilograms x 40RPM = 4880 kg / minute Range _Belfast_ 23,300 meters Range _Prinz Eugen_ 33,500 meters So - despite it's much higher rate of fire - because of it's much smaller shells - the _weight_ of fire per minute for the _Belfast_ is only 16 kg more than it is for the _Prinz Eugen_ . IRL - 8" guns have more range - (10,200 meters more for the _Prinz Eugen_ ) thus making the ships speed a factor. Both ships have a listed speed of 32 knots. What that means - is that _Prinz Eugen_ could open fire from outside the range of the _Belfast_ and then - keep out of range. Advantage _Prinz Eugen_ . Now of course - that's just one factor and the Germans would have to take advantage of their advantage - but that IS an advantage. _Belfast_ couldn't close unless _Prinz Eugen_ made a mistake. Even if _Belfast_ was able to close - it would have to close 10,200 meters on a ship of approximately equal speed - all while under fire from it's longer range guns - before it could even bring it's own guns in range. The most likely scenario for _Belfast_ to be able to close the range - would be for it to be heading straight for the _Prinz Eugen_ and only able to use it's forward six guns once it got in range - if it wanted to close any more. The whole time - the _Prinz Eugen_ could be firing it's whole broadside. Then - it could turn away before _Belfast_ got in range - and still stay out of range while engaging _Belfast_ with it's 4 stern guns. That - and each shell that hit the _Belfast_ would do more damage than any hits scored on _Prinz Eugen_ . So - if _Belfast_ were able to close within range of it's own guns - which would (if it still had all of them) only give it a 16kg weight of fire advantage. Here - the question is - how much damage would be done to the _Belfast_ before it could even hit back? You know how Naval Warfare is - Critical Hits count for a lot. If _Prinze Eugen_ could hurt _Belfast_ and _Belfast_ could not hurt it - the engagement would tend to turn in favor of the _Prinz Eugen_ . Then - if the _Belfast_ was losing - IF - it was in range of the _Prinz Eugen_ - then it would not be able to leave as the _Prinz Eugen_ could keep up with it. Being the same speed and having a range advantage is NOT the same thing as having a speed advantage AND a range advantage but - it, again, is an advantage. _Belfast_ could make smoke - and hence limit _Prinz Eugen's_ ability to hurt it if it were fleeing. However - IRL - these ships may or may not have been able to make this listed speed. German ships were known for having their engine problems but RN ships were known for being used hard. Engine problems were in fact what terminated _Prinz Eugen's_ attempt at Commerce Raiding after _Bismarck_ was lost in getting it clear to do so. Then you have other factors such as time of day, weather, sea state, etc. The biggest advantage would however, be who had the best Captain. One of the problems with games like this is that the AI Captains tend to be stupid. Here - for _Prinz Eugen_ to even be in range of _Belfast_ would be stupid. Thus, with a good Captain - the _Belfast_ with the same speed as the _Prinz Eugen_ could avoid ever getting within range of the _Prinz Eugen_ in the first place. Then _Belfast_ could radio the rest of the RN as to just where _Prinz Eugen_ was - and - that would not be a good thing for the Germans if, say, they were out Commerce Raiding or something like that. With the same speed - just as _Belfast_ could not shake _Prinz Eugen_ if it were losing the engagement - _Prinz Eugen_ could not shake _Belfast_ if it were trying to break contact before more of the RN showed up. Again - having the same speed - is not as decisive as having a greater speed and having full control of the engagement. So - there are a number of factors here that could make a difference. If one ship were to take a hit that reduced it's speed - then - that could also make a difference - and with them starting out at the same speed - it wouldn't take much of a hit to create that situation. Here - if _Prinz Eugen_ were out Commerce Raiding - as opposed to taking on British Cruisers for the fun of it (like we would be playing this game) it might be working to break contact where making smoke and darkness would be a factor - but - also radar. So - this could be a tricky engagement IRL. _Prinz Eugen_ if trying to break contact and unable to do so - might turn on _Belfast_ and attempt to hurt it enough - that it could break contact before more of the RN showed up. Here - maintaining it's range advantage would also be tricky if _Belfast_ were merely trying to keep from getting hurt - so that it could maintain contact. If _Belfast_ were falling back to stay out of range - and _Prinze Eugen_ faked it out - especially if there were smoke involved - then _Prinze Eugen_ might be able to break contact. All in all - the game of cat and mouse might be more interesting sport than just a straight up gunnery duel. IRL - as to quality of officers the RN would tend to have a greater chance of doing so than the KM. Here - even if the _Belfast_ were sunk - but - it stopped _Prinz Eugen's_ Commerce Raiding - that might be a good trade and if it could hurt it - like say the _Graf Spee_ was hurt - that could be decisive. The _Graf Spee_ won a tactical victory in it's engagement but suffered a strategic defeat because of the damage it took that would have prevented it from returning to Germany even if the RN let it try (if the damage could not be repaired). .

It is most foolish to maneuver so as to allow only your bow guns to engage the enemy, thus cutting your firepower in half. It's something I see the AI do a lot in this game. All guns should engage the enemy ASAP, meaning you turn to present full broadsides. Nevertheless, Eugen's 8 x 8 inch guns still managed to win against Belfast's 12 x 6 inch guns, which is not surprising. A 6 inch gun cruiser is not at all likely to defeat an 8 inch gun cruiser.
